Frank Herbert ist der Bestsellerautor der Dune-Saga. Er wurde in Tacoma, Washington, geboren und studierte an der University of Washington in Seattle. Er arbeitete in einer Vielzahl von Berufen, darunter TV-Kameramann, Radio-Kommentator, Austerntaucher, Dschungelüberlebenstrainer, Laienanalytiker, kreativer Schreibdozent, Reporter und Redakteur mehrerer Zeitungen an der Westküste, bevor er Vollzeitautor wurde. 1952 begann Herbert mit der Veröffentlichung von Science-Fiction-Geschichten, beginnend mit "Looking for Something?" in Startling Stories. Sein Durchbruch als bedeutender Schriftsteller erfolgte jedoch erst 1965 mit der Veröffentlichung von Dune. Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune und Chapterhouse: Dune folgten und vervollständigten die Saga, die die Chicago Tribune als "ein Denkmal der modernen Science-Fiction" bezeichnete. Herbert ist auch der Autor von etwa zwanzig weiteren Büchern, darunter The White Plague, The Dosadi Experiment und Destination: Void. Er starb 1986.
