Critter wurde zufällig im Studio einer Motion-Display-Firma namens Hankscraft Motors in NYC konzipiert. Es hat einen Paten namens David Dear, den Schöpfer des fabelhaften Duck Mirror, des Rainbow Maker und vieler anderer erstaunlicher Produkte. Die ersten viertausend Critters wurden von Hand gefertigt, wobei ein japanisches Vintage-Getriebe aus den 1950er Jahren verwendet wurde, das in einem Restpostengeschäft gefunden wurde. Der erste Laden, der Critter verkaufte, heißt Mxyplyzyk. Zwischen Hankscraft, Mxyplyzyk und Kikkerland können Sie also eine Vorstellung davon bekommen, womit wir es hier zu tun haben.
