Er war eine eindeutige Weiterentwicklung des Escort Mk 1, der 1968 auf dem Brüsseler Autosalon vorgestellt wurde. Der Vorgänger behielt die hohe mechanische Qualität bei, wurde aber im Design komplett überarbeitet, das den ästhetischen und stilistischen Geschmack der 70er Jahre interpretierte. Neben den eher funktionalen Versionen gab es auch eine Escort Sport Version mit aggressiverer Optik und betont sportlichem Interieur. Schliesslich wurde auch die Version RS 1800 mit einem 115 PS starken Doppelnockenmotor vorgestellt, der die Basis für die Sonderversion bildete, die in der Rallye-Weltmeisterschaft eingesetzt wurde und dort beachtliche Ergebnisse erzielte. Von 1975 bis 1979 gewann der Ford Escort RS 1800 fünf Jahre in Folge die prestigeträchtige RAC Rallye, die wichtigste Rallye-Veranstaltung im Vereinigten Königreich und eine wichtige Etappe der Rallye-Weltmeisterschaft.

It was a significant evolution compared to the Escort Mk 1 that debuted at Brussels Motor Show in January 1968.
