Vivid has been living on the fringes of society in Denver Colorado until one night, in a twist of fate, she is attacked by a vampire and is forced to confront both the choices of her past and those of her future. Aubrey is a reluctant, underpaid intern at the Denver City Library and quickly realizes that she doesn't fit in with her work colleagues. Feeling lonely and isolated, she starts up a romance with a young man who is not as charming as he initially appears to be. When Aubrey's magical powers manifest unexpectedly, throwing her life further into chaos, she seeks support from Vivid who becomes an unlikely ally. The two embark on an adventure to New Mexico where they hope to meet a magic healer, also known as a dreamweaver. After arriving at the dreamweaver's mystical ranch, they eventually learn the truth of their magical powers and begin to heal from the darkness of their pasts through the bonds of friendship and supportive mentorship.

Set in Cornwall, coastal erosion and flooding take on a near mythical power as the short stories in this collection weave in and out of the recent past and near future, as lives and relationships ebb and flow with the tide. From one maritime tragedy to another, the community, and three generations of women from the same family, struggle with their over-close affinity for the sea.
