Rough Trade Distribution Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!? A1068276578
Hanif Reads Toni (Feat. Vermilion The Bluest Eye A1001474224
Vermilion The Bluest Eye A1001474224
Read the searing first novel from the celebrated author of Beloved, which immerses us in the tragic, torn lives of a poor black family in post-Depression 1940s Ohio. Unlovely and unloved, Pecola prays each night for blue eyes like those of her privileged white schoolfellows. At once intimate and expansive, unsparing in its truth-telling, The Bluest Eye shows how the past savagely defines the present. A powerful examination of our obsession with beauty and conformity, Toni Morrison's virtuosic first novel asks powerful questions about race, class, and gender with the subtlety and grace that have always characterised her writing. 'She revealed the sins of her nation, while profoundly elevating its canon. She suffused the telling of blackness with beauty, whilst steering us away from the perils of the white gaze. That's why she told her stories. And why we will never, ever stop reading them' Afua Hirsch 'Discovering a writer like Toni Morrison is rarest of pleasures' Washington Post 'When she arrived, with her first novel, The Bluest Eye , she immediately re-ordered the American literary landscape' Ben Okri Winner of the PEN/Saul Bellow award for achievement in American fiction

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER NAMED A BEST BOOK BY THE NEW YORK TIMES THE WASHINGTON POST NPR PEOPLE TIME MAGAZINE VANITY FAIR GLAMOUR BARACK OBAMA New York Times Readers Pick: 100 Best Books of the 21st Century Bennett s tone and style recalls James Baldwin and Jacqueline Woodson, but it s especially reminiscent of Toni Morrison s 1970 debut novel, The Bluest Eye. Kiley Reid, Wall Street Journal From the New York Times-bestselling author of The Mothers, a stunning new novel about twin sisters, inseparable as children, who ultimately choose to live in two very different worlds, one black and one white. The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Many years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters' storylines intersect? Weaving together multiple strands and generations of this family, from the Deep South to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, Brit Bennett produces a story that is at once a riveting, emotional family story and a brilliant exploration of the American history of passing. Looking well beyond issues of race, The Vanishing Half considers the lasting influence of the past as it shapes a person's decisions, desires, and expectations, and explores some of the multiple reasons and realms in which people sometimes feel pulled to live as something other than their origins. As with her New York Times-bestselling debut The Mothers, Brit Bennett offers an engrossing page-turner about family and relationships that is immersive and provocative, compassionate and wise.

Faber & Faber Black and Female A1069020649
Being categorised as black and female does not constrain my writing. Writing assures me that I am more than merely blackness and femaleness. Writing assures me I am.This paradigm shifting essay collection weaves the personal and political in an illuminating exploration of internationally acclaimed novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga's complex relationship with race and gender. At once philosophical, intimate and urgent, Dangarmebga's landmark essays address the profound cultural and political questions that underpin her novels for the first time. From her experience of life with a foster family in Dover and the difficulty of finding a publisher as a young Zimbabwean novelist, to the ways in which colonialism continues to disrupt the lives and minds of those subjugated by empire, Dangarembga writes to recenter marginalised voices.Black and Female offers a powerful vision toward re-membering - to use Toni Morrison's word - those whose identities and experiences continue to be fractured by the intersections of history, race and gender.

Vermilion Recitatif A1062226233
Vermilion Recitatif A1062226233
'Toni Morrison was the lodestar who inspired us' Bernadine Evaristo Twyla and Roberta have known each other since they were eight years old, when they were thrown together as roommates in a girls' shelter. Inseparable then, they lose touch as they grow older, only to meet again later at a diner, a grocery store and then at a protest. The two women are seemingly at opposite ends of every problem but, despite their conflict, the deep bond their shared experience has forged between them is undeniable. Recitatif keeps Twyla's and Roberta's races ambiguous throughout the story. We know that one is white and one is black, but which is which? And who is right about the race of the woman the girls tormented at the orphanage? This story is a masterful exploration of what keeps us together and what keeps us apart, of race and the relationships that shape our lives. Now with a new introduction by Zadie Smith, it is as radically compelling and relevant today as it was when first written nearly forty years ago. 'Toni Morrison is the greatest chronicler of the American experience that we have ever known' Tayari Jones 'Her work is an act of giving her community back to itself, so that people - African-Americans but the diaspora as well - can see and witness themselves' Diana Evans

G-Adam Verlag Lies das Spiel! A1070815770

Americans have built an empire on the idea of "race," a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men-bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates's attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son-and readers-the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children's lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.

Vintage Books The Birth Of Pleasure A1003322920
Vintage Books The Birth Of Pleasure A1003322920
Love like falling rain can revive an arid life. But how can we find the love that brings true pleasure? How can we avoid the tragic love with its lessons of sacrifice and loss so deeply embedded in our culture? 'Pleasure is a sensation. It is written into our bodies; it is an experience of delight of joy'In this inspiring book Carol Gilligan sets out to create a radical new map of love. Although old patriarchal structures have been challenged the underlying patterns remain: the channeling of boys into 'masculinity'; the anxiety of girls in adolescence the silences between men and women the split between our social and our inner voice. In her work with children adolescents and couples in crisis Gilligan came to see how this 'double consciousness' - already present in the violence and betrayal of ancient myths like that of Oedipus - had developed over thousands of years. Hunting for a counter myth she discovered the story of Psyche and Cupid a haunting tale of love and the searching soul a model of resistance which she uses to frame her quest showing how joy can be discovered in the heart of pain. The Birth of Pleasure rings with the voices of girls and boys mothers and fathers lovers and couples and echoes with telling readings of familiar writers from Greek tragedy to Anne Frank from Shakespeare to Proust from Freud to Toni Morrison. All of us will find something that we recognise - and with luck this brilliant compassionate flame-like book could really change our lives.

Random House N.Y. Beloved (Pulitzer Prize Winner) A1002881642
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Toni Morrison’s Beloved is a spellbinding and dazzlingly innovative portrait of a woman haunted by the past, presented here in stunning hardcover with an introduction by A. S. Byatt. Named by The Atlantic as one of the Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years. Sethe was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has borne the unthinkable and not gone mad, yet she is still held captive by memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. Meanwhile Sethe’s house has long been troubled by the angry, destructive ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved. Sethe works at beating back the past, but it makes itself heard and felt incessantly in her memory and in the lives of those around her. When a mysterious teenage girl arrives, calling herself Beloved, Sethe’s terrible secret explodes into the present. Combining the visionary power of legend with the unassailable truth of history, Morrison’s unforgettable novel is one of the great and enduring works of American literature. Everyman's Library pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free cream-colored paper, with full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, and a full-color illustrated jacket. Distanz Verlag Queere Kunst in der DDR? A1078077193
Distanz Verlag Queere Kunst in der DDR? A1078077193
As the first comprehensive exploration of queer art in East Germany, this volume challenges simplified narratives of decriminalization to examine the creation of art under political and sexual repression. Queer people in East Germany lived in a situation defined by government control, enforced public silence, and social invisibility. Although the German Democratic Republic (GDR) struck Paragraph 175 of the penal code in 1968, many years before its Western counterpart did, Paragraph 151 remained on the books, codifying queer people's unequal status. Despite gradual decriminalization, homosexuality remained heavily stigmatized both socially and politically. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the situation of queer artists did not improve significantly. On the contrary, many artists from the GDR faced the threat of being forgotten. The connection between these two perspectives--queer biographies and artistic forms of expression in the communist dictatorship--remains largely unexplored to this day. The exhibition and publication project sheds light on queer positions in art from East Germany, delving into the question of how an artist's sexuality affected their work and professional development under the communist dictatorship. Retracing the lives and oeuvres of the artists Toni Ebel, Andreas Fux, Harry Hachmeister, Jochen Hass, Dorothea von Philipsborn, Erika Stürmer-Alex, Rita Thomas, Jürgen Wittdorf, and Egon Wrobel, the book illustrates the widely different ways in which they handled the political and social constraints of their time. The book includes essays by Birgit Bosold, Dorothee Brill, Maria Bühner, Christine Heidemann, Stephan Koal, Christoph Tannert, and Raimund Wolfert.

Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group Things Fall Apart A1005036439
The most widely read book in modern African literature, presented here in stunning hardcover, tells two overlapping, intertwining stories, both of which center around a fearless Igbo warrior in Nigeria in the late 1800s, before and after the European colonization of the continent. "African literature is incomplete and unthinkable without the works of Chinua Achebe." --Toni Morrison Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read. The first of these stories traces Okonkwo's fall from grace with the tribal world in which he lives, and in its classical purity of line and economical beauty it provides us with a powerful fable about the immemorial conflict between the individual and society. The second story, which is as modern as the first is ancient, and which elevates the book to a tragic plane, concerns the clash of cultures and the destruction of Okonkwo's world through the arrival of aggressive, proselytizing European missionaries. These twin dramas are perfectly harmonized, and they are modulated by an awareness capable of encompassing at once the life of nature, human history, and the mysterious compulsions of the soul. THINGS FALL APART is the most illuminating and permanent monument we have to the modern African experience as seen from within. Everyman's Library pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free cream-colored paper, with full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, and a full-color illustrated jacket. Vermilion The Waterbearers A1075795899
A heartfelt memoir exploring Black womanhood, motherhood and culture; perfect for fans of Toni Morrison and Stay True by Hua Hsu. 'A tale of evolution and hope' - Hilton Als, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of White Girls 'One of the most beautiful and truthful books I've ever read. ' - Imani Perry, National Book Award-winning author of South to America -------------- 'Wherever there is water, there is mystery. And mystery breeds mythology.' When Sasha Bonét's grandmother, Betty Jean, raised eleven children in a Texas bayou house, she did it alone, creating a home that was the heart of their family. Her daughter, Mama Connie, vowed to live differently but found herself echoing her mother's struggles. Now, Sasha navigates motherhood, reflecting on the legacies of Black women like Nina Simone, Betty Davis, Michelle Obama, Rosa Parks and Darnella Frazier (the woman who told the world about George Floyd) to build a portrait of Black womanhood through time. From mundane yet powerful mornings at the kitchen table to moments of courageously taking on the world at large in the fight for dignity, Bonét explores the trials and triumphs of Black matriarchy - escape, promise, burden, assent and rebellion - weaving personal history with cultural narratives. With clear-eyed tenderness, The Waterbearers reveals intimate vignettes mixed with cultural history of Black women who have built legacies and changed the world through the ties of love - and complexity - that bind them. Praise for The Waterbearers: 'A bold new entry in the canon of literature about Black motherhood' - Kaitlyn Greenidge, author of Libertie 'Magnificent ... Bonét dances on our hearts in this classic creation of will and wit. Electrifying and incredibly sturdy. Wow.' - Kiese Laymon, author of Heavy 'The Waterbearers is a wonder of a book ? raw in its honesty, tender in its gaze, lyrical and luminous on the page.' - Jendella Benson, author of Hope and Glory 'An epic love song and a remarkable ballad of generations...the women in these pages [have] forever deepened my understanding of motherhood, history, homecoming, and the revolutionary potential of love .' - Leslie Jamison, author of The Empathy Exams
