Studies of democratization in the 1980s and 1990s after the second-wave of military regimes across the world investigated the process from various angles, each focusing on its specific dimensions and actors. This study analyzes the Turkish experience of re-democratization preceded by a relatively short military regime (1980-1983) from the perspective of political parties. It deals with both the trajectory of democratization and the reconstruction of political parties as institutions. Turkish democratization has turned out to be a protracted process extending into the late 1990s and even continuing today--, and it has unfolded through a series of political reforms. While the Turkish military has retained its tutelary and supervisory role, political parties emerged as the critical actors in the reform process. This study looks closely into the identities and strategies of Turkey s major political parties and party elites who held power in the first decade after the transition from military rule. It analyzes how parties have met the double challenge of institutionalizing and of democratizating the political system amidst internal and external pressures.

Digital platforms permeate everyday life by providing services for communication, e-commerce, health, and mobility. These services continuously collect personal data from diverse, sometimes sensitive domains. While such data collection enables service improvement and innovation, it also amplifies privacy risks for users through monetization. Tracking, for example, allows personalized advertising based on extensive profiling. In consumer markets, only a few dominant platforms shape how personal data is collected and used, for instance through consent banners. As personal data becomes a critical economic asset, platform providers increasingly benefit from its exploitation without offering users adequate protection or value in return. In Information Systems research, digital platforms are understood as socio-technical systems that mediate interactions and facilitate data exchange across actors through shared infrastructures. With the ubiquitous personal data collection in digital platforms, privacy risks are increasingly tied to growing power, information, and value asymmetries. Dominant providers structurally reduce transparency in data collection to profit from data use. Against this backdrop, this dissertation examines how privacy is managed in digital platforms by conceptualizing how these asymmetries arise and reinforce each other. Across three empirical projects, it analyzes power imbalances in personal data collection, knowledge gaps about data practices, and fair compensation for secondary data use. The results deepen our understanding of how to reduce asymmetries and offer practical guidance on how platforms can empower users in the collection and use of their personal data.

The end of the Cold War and the gradual opening of the archives in the former Communist countries made it possible for researchers to begin writing the history of the era from a wider perspective. This work on the imposition of Communism on Romania by the Soviet Union at the end of World War II is based on archival documents, memoirs, diaries and secondary sources. It describes and analyzes the opposition parties struggle to prevent the seizure of power by the Communists and the transformation of Romania into a totalitarian state. The work examines the pre-1989 views on the period and contrasts them with new interpretations of scholars who had the opportunity to work in the newly opened archives. It also analyzes the repressive means and methods used by the Communists against the main parties in order to abolish them and imprison their leaders. The findings of this study are to some extent mixed. It concludes that many of the views of the Cold War era were to some extent confirmed by documents from the previously closed archives. Yet, there are some new and old interpretations that are contradicted by the evidence presented in this work.

This book explores musical and personal experiences of three Sudanese women performers and analyzes textual meanings of a particular type of women s songs in Sudan called aghani al-banaat. Because there are many discourses about womanhood , culture, and gender in Sudan, aghani al-banaat could stand as another narrative for negotiating gender/power relations and identity formation by the Sudanese women. Despite being labeled as loose and bad singing, aghani al-baanat provided a discursive space through which the Sudanese women voiced their alternative narratives of social and gender relations. It offered both a framework of negotiating the existing relations as well as a dream of improvement.The book concludes that Sudanese women, especially the pioneering performers of ex-slave descendent origin, created their own culture and popular literature in which they contextualize the past, the present, and the future of their varied realities and fantasies.
