Nosy Crow, Kinderbücher, I Am the Seed That Grew the Tree - A Nature Poem for Every Day of the Year (Englisch, Fiona Waters, Frann Preston-Gannon, 2018) 9780857637703

Combined Academic Publ. Simonson, P: Refiguring Mass Communication A1009828968
Combined Academic Publ. Simonson, P: Refiguring Mass Communication A1009828968
This unique inquiry into the history and ongoing moral significance of mass communication also represents a defense, extension, and overhaul of the idea and social form of the discipline. Organized around narrative accounts of individuals and their communicative worlds, Refiguring Mass Communication illuminates significant but overlooked rhetorical episodes in history to enable modern-day readers to rehabilitate and reinvigorate their own engagements with mass communication. Coined in the 1920s as a way to describe radio, motion pictures, wide-circulation magazines, and the press, the term "mass communication" frequently is misused in the era of cable TV, niche marketing, and the Internet. In Refiguring Mass Communication, Peter Simonson compares his own vision of mass communication with distinct views articulated throughout history by Paul of Tarsus, Walt Whitman, Charles Horton Cooley, David Sarnoff, and Robert K. Merton, utilizing a collection of texts and tenets from a variety of time periods and perspectives. Drawing on textual and archival research as well as access to Merton's personal papers, Simonson broadly reconceives a sense of communication theory and what social processes might be considered species of mass communication. Simonson reveals the geographical and social contexts from which these visions have emerged and the religious and moral horizons against which they have taken shape. In a unique perspective, he considers the American county fair as an example of a live gathering and crucial site that is overlooked in contemporary forms of mass communication, urging a reconsideration of how individuals participate in and shape similar forms.

Jodie HarshA history of the club that set the '80s alight, by the much-loved presenter, writer and Blitz attendee Robert Elms. The short-lived Blitz club in London's Covent Garden was more than somewhere to hang out or be seen: it was a catalyst for cultural explosion, a counter-culture blast against everything Thatcher's leadership had ushered in by the dawn of the 80s. Tuesday nights boasted a ferocious, fearless cast - from Boy George and Spandau Ballet to Grayson Perry and Peter Doig, to Michele Clapton, Sade and John Galliano. This was the vanguard of a different England; socially liberal, loud, proud and diverse, fiercely individualistic and determined to succeed. Britain was black and white; the Blitz Kids switched on the colour. In Blitz, Elms reflects on a club night founded by working-class kids, one whose impact reverberated beyond its doors, through the worlds of Art, Literature, Fashion and Music, and into the present day.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE FOR NON-FICTION BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week A Financial Times Book of the Year 2025 A Times and Telegraph Best Book of the Summer 2026 'AN EXCEPTIONAL BOOK.' Robert Macfarlane, author of Underland 'A BOLD, BEAUTIFUL, CONFRONTING JOURNEY.' Isabella Tree, author of Wilding 'LOVELY ... FULL OF INCIDENT, COLOUR AND NUGGETY FACTS.' Robbie Millen, The Times From the winner of the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award comes an epic walk across the Alps in the footsteps of a wolf, throwing unique light on Europe's mountainous hinterlands at a moment of political and environmental change. In 2011, a young wolf named Slavc set out from Slovenia. Traced by GPS, he travelled a thousand miles through the Alps, arriving four months later on the Lessinian plateau, north of Verona. There had been no wolves in northern Italy for a century, but here he crossed paths with a female wolf on a walkabout of her own. A decade later and there are more than a hundred wolves back in the area, the result of their remarkable meeting. In Lone Wolf, Weymouth walks Slavc's path, examining the changes facing these wild corners of Europe. Here, the call to rewild meets the urge to preserve culture; nationalism and globalisation pull apart; climate change is radically changing lives; and migrants, too, are on the move. The result is a multifaceted account of a region caught in a moment of kaleidoscopic flux, from an award-winning writer with a uniquely perceptive eye for detail.

Random House N.Y. How to Get Rich A1007336371
Uncover the secret to incredible wealth with practical advice from self-made millionaire Felix Dennis, for personal finance readers of Napoleon Hill and Robert Kiyosaki. Felix Dennis was an expert at proving people wrong. Starting as a college dropout with no family money, he created a publishing empire, founded Maxim magazine, made himself one of the richest people in the UK, and had a blast in the process. How to Get Rich is his magnum opus—and it is not like any personal finance or self-help book you’ve ever read. Dennis isn’t selling snake oil, investment tips, or motivational nonsense. He instead asks a simple question: are you young, desperate, and hungry enough to do whatever it takes to get rich? If not, this book might not be for you. That’s fine! But if so… This is a book of lessons in business, learned the hard way so you don’t have to. Dennis shares key insights and mindset shifts on the journey to getting very rich, including: Compulsion for money is mandatory. Cut loose from negative influences. Never give in. Ignore “great ideas.” Concentrate on great execution. Keep your eye on the ball marked “The Money is Here.” Hire talent smarter than you. Delegate. Ownership is what really matters. Sell before you need to, or when you’re bored. Fear nothing and no one. Witty, true, and often hilarious, How to Get Rich is the only really honest guide for making gobs of money. Are you willing to do what it takes?

Macmillan Collector's Library Mariana A1080946864
Mary hears on the radio that the British warship her husband is on has sunk, leaving few survivors. Waiting for daybreak to bring news, Mary escapes into memories of her past. Sincere and engaging - a 'hot-water bottle' novel - Mariana by Monica Dickens is full of sharply remembered detail: childhood holidays, the heartbreak of first love, making friends, growing up.At eleven, Mary Shannon is sprightly and observant. She adores leaving London to spend holidays with her family at Charbury House in Somerset. Playing with her cousins means time with Denys, who she loves best of all. When she joins a secondary school, Mary knows no one, but salvation comes in the form of Angela Shaw, and together they move on to acting college. The ups of studying with Angela are outnumbered by the downs, so Mary drops out after various humiliating run-ins with a cruel teacher. Next Mary moves to Paris, learns to design dresses, and is swept off her feet by the immensely wealthy Pierre. But will this be enough for her?Mariana is part of the Persephone Audiobook Collection, a series of forgotten classics including neglected fiction and non-fiction by women writers. First published in 1940, this edition includes a preface by Harriet Lane and is narrated by Sophie Roberts.

From Robert Charles Wilson, the author of the Hugo-winning Spin, comes Burning Paradise, a new tale of humans coming to grips with a universe of implacable strangeness. Cassie Klyne, nineteen years old, lives in the United States in the year 2015-but it's not our United States, and it's not our 2015. Cassie's world has been at peace since the Great Armistice of 1918. There was no World War II, no Great Depression. Poverty is declining, prosperity is increasing everywhere; social instability is rare. But Cassie knows the world isn't what it seems. Her parents were part of a group who gradually discovered the awful truth: that for decades-back to the dawn of radio communications-human progress has been interfered with, made more peaceful and benign, by an extraterrestrial entity. That by interfering with our communications, this entity has tweaked history in massive and subtle ways. That humanity is, for purposes unknown, being farmed. Cassie's parents were killed for this knowledge, along with most of the other members of their group. Since then, the survivors have scattered and gone into hiding. Cassie and her younger brother Thomas now live with her aunt Nerissa, who shares these dangerous secrets. Others live nearby. For eight years they have attempted to lead unexceptional lives in order to escape detection. The tactic has worked. Until now. Because the killers are back. And they're not human.

A healthy dose of Victorian meta physics outlines this story of a man's spiritual awakening after he meets a mysterious man and boy aboard a steamer ship touring the Greek isles. Always well written with beautiful prose... (Robert Williams) About the author Algernon Henry Blackwood, CBE (14 March 1869 - 10 December 1951) was an English broadcasting narrator, journalist, novelist and short story writer, and among the most prolific ghost story writers in the history of the genre. The literary critic S. T. Joshi stated, "His work is more consistently meritorious than any weird writer's except Dunsany's" and that his short story collection Incredible Adventures (1914) "may be the premier weird collection of this or any other century". Throughout his adult life, he was an occasional essayist for periodicals. In his late thirties, he moved back to England and started to write stories of the supernatural. He was successful, writing at least ten original collections of short stories and later telling them on radio and television. He also wrote 14 novels, several children's books and a number of plays, most of which were produced, but not published. He was an avid lover of nature and the outdoors, as many of his stories reflect. To satisfy his interest in the supernatural, he joined The Ghost Club. He never married; according to his friends he was a loner, but also cheerful company. His two best-known stories are probably "The Willows" and "The Wendigo". He would also often write stories for newspapers at short notice, with the result that he was unsure exactly how many short stories he had written and there is no sure total. Though Blackwood wrote a number of horror stories, his most typical work seeks less to frighten than to induce a sense of awe. Good examples are the novels The Centaur, which reaches a climax with a traveller's sight of a herd of the mythical creatures; and Julius LeVallon and its sequel The Bright Messenger, which deal with reincarnation and the possibility of a new, mystical evolution of human consciousness. Blackwood died after several strokes. Officially his death on 10 December 1951 was from cerebral thrombosis, with arteriosclerosis as a contributing factor. He was cremated at Golders Green crematorium.

'You will not find a better, more balanced or up-to-date take on either the origin of life or synthetic biology. Essential reading' Observer Creation by Adam Rutherford tells the entire spellbinding story of life in two gripping narratives. 'Prepare to be astounded. There are moments when this book is so gripping it reads like a thriller' Mail on Sunday The Origin of Life is a four-billion-year detective story that uses the latest science to explain what life is and where it first came from, dealing with life's biggest questions and arriving at a thrilling answer. 'A superbly written explanation' Brian Cox The Future of Life introduces an extraordinary technological revolution: 'synthetic biology', the ability to create entirely new life forms within the lab. Adam Rutherford explains how this remarkable innovation works and presents a powerful argument for its benefit to humankind. 'The reader's sense of awe at the well-nigh inconceivable nature of nature is suitably awakened. The extraordinary science and Rutherford's argument are worth every reader's scrutiny. Fascinating' Sunday Telegraph 'One of the most eloquent and genuinely thoughtful books on science over the past decade. You will not find a better, more balanced or up-to-date take on the origin of life or synthetic biology. Essential reading for anyone interested in the coming revolution, which could indeed rival the Industrial Revolution or the internet' Observer 'The perfect primer on the past and future of DNA' Guardian 'Susenseful, erudite and thrilling' Prospect 'A witty, engaging and eye-opening explanation of the basic units of life, right back to our common ancestors and on to their incredible synthetic future. The mark of a really good science book, it shows that the questions we still have are just as exciting as the answers we already know' Dara O Briain 'This is a quite delightful two-books-in-one. Rutherford's lightness of touch in describing the dizzying complexity of life at the cellular level in The Origin of Life only serves to emphasise the sheer scale and ambition of the emerging field of synthetic biology' Jim Al Khalili 'A fascinating glimpse into our past and future. Rutherford's illuminating book is full of optimism about what we might be able to achieve' Sunday Times 'Fresh, original and excellent. An eye-opening look at how we are modifying and constructing life. Totally fascinating' PopularScience.co.uk 'In this book of two halves, Rutherford tells the epic history of life on earth, and eloquently argues the case for embracing technology which allows us to become biological designers' Alice Roberts 'An engaging account of both the mystery of life's origin and its impending resolution as well as a fascinating glimpse of the impending birth of a new, synthetic biology'' Matt Ridley, author of Genome 'I warmly recommend Creation. THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'A dramatic, poignant and astonishing untold story of the Holocaust.' SIMON SEBAG MONTEFIORE 'Extraordinary. One of the most haunting episodes of the war.' DAILY MAIL 'The remarkable story of a unique event - the reprieve of 51 Hungarian Jewish teenagers already naked and trapped inside the gas chambers.' PROFESSOR ROBERT JAN VAN PELT An unforgettable testament to hope and the bonds of brotherhood, Miracle reveals the untold story of the boys who escaped the gas chamber in Auschwitz, the only known group of Holocaust survivors to walk away from the jaws of the Nazi killing machine. Early on the morning of October 10, 1944, eight-hundred boys, aged between 13 and 17, were taken out of Block 11 at Auschwitz. The night before, during a visit by Dr Josef Mengele, their identification cards had been stamped with a solitary German word - gestorben - 'died' in English. They were then marched by 25 bayonet-wielding SS men to Crematorium 5, stripped, and herded into a gas chamber. This book is the story of a true-life miracle of the fifty-one boys who were pulled from that gas chamber - the only Holocaust survivors known to have escaped such a close brush with the Nazi killing machine - and given a second chance at life. A life, of course, that would be so horrifically snatched from those around them. Based on the first-hand testimonies of six of the boys, six survivors whose stories are shared in this book for the very first time, Miracle interweaves the lives of the boys and the grander sweep of history in which they were held. The result is an unforgettable tale of hope, faith and fortitude in the face of one of the worst crimes against humanity. 'Astonishing. A powerful book.' JEWISH NEWS 'A truly extraordinary story.' THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'A dramatic, poignant and astonishing untold story of the Holocaust.' SIMON SEBAG MONTEFIORE 'Extraordinary. A powerful book.' JEWISH NEWS 'A truly extraordinary story.' JAMES O'BRIEN 'The remarkable but harrowing true story. Extraordinary.' TIMES RADIO

LONGLISTED FOR THE WAINWRIGHT PRIZE FOR NATURE WRITING 2025 AND A RADIO 4 BOOK OF THE WEEK 'A dazzlingly inventive work of literature' Robert Macfarlane, author of The Old Ways 'A wonderful, epic braiding of history, geography and personal memoir' James Rebanks, author of English Pastoral _____________________________________________________________________ At the heart of this book is a highway. The A1; The Great North Road. A 400-mile multiplicity of ancient trackway, Roman road, pilgrim path, coach route and motorway that has run like a backbone through Britain for the last 2,000 years. In this genre-defying and profoundly personal book, Cowen follows this ghost road from beginning to end on a journey through history, place, people and time. Weaving his own histories and memories with the layered landscapes he moves through, this is the story of an age, of coming to terms with time past and time passing, and the roads that lead us to where we find ourselves. Written in kaleidoscopic prose, The North Road is an unforgettable exploration of Britain's great highway. __________________________________________________________________________ 'This is an astonishing book in its scope and vitality. It's one to relish and revisit.' The Telegraph 'A remarkable, post-Covid, post-Brexit state of the nation literary archaeology.' Financial Times 'Stunning and utterly unique.
