Bantam Books USA Defending Jacob (TV Tie-In Edition) A1057528502
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A legal thriller that’s comparable to classics such as Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent . . . tragic and shocking.”—Associated Press NOW AN EMMY-NOMINATED ORIGINAL STREAMING SERIES • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Entertainment Weekly • Boston Globe • Kansas City Star Andy Barber has been an assistant district attorney for two decades. He is respected. Admired in the courtroom. Happy at home with the loves of his life: his wife, Laurie, and their teenage son, Jacob. Then Andy’s quiet suburb is stunned by a shocking crime: a young boy stabbed to death in a leafy park. And an even greater shock: The accused is Andy’s own son—shy; awkward, mysterious Jacob. Andy believes in Jacob’s innocence. Any parent would. But the pressure mounts. Damning evidence. Doubt. A faltering marriage. The neighbors’ contempt. A murder trial that threatens to obliterate Andy’s family. It is the ultimate test for any parent: How far would you go to protect your child? It is a test of devotion. A test of how well a parent can know a child. For Andy Barber, a man with an iron will and a dark secret, it is a test of guilt and innocence in the deepest sense. How far would you go? Praise for Defending Jacob “A novel like this comes along maybe once a decade . . . a tour de force, a full-blooded legal thriller about a murder trial and the way it shatters a family. With its relentless suspense, its mesmerizing prose, and a shocking twist at the end, it’s every bit as good as Scott Turow’s great Presumed Innocent. But it’s also something more: an indelible domestic drama that calls to mind Ordinary People and We Need to Talk About Kevin. A spellbinding and unforgettable literary crime novel.” —Joseph Finder “ Defending Jacob is smart, sophisticated, and suspenseful—capturing both the complexity and stunning fragility of family life.” —Lee Child “Powerful . . . leaves you gasping breathlessly at each shocking revelation.” —Lisa Gardner “Disturbing; complex, and gripping, Defending Jacob is impossible to put down. William Landay is a stunning talent.” —Carla Neggers “Riveting; suspenseful, and emotionally searing.” —Linwood Barclay

This is a first-rate performance inaugurating a most promising series." —The Washington Post "Perveen Mistry has all the pluck you want in a sleuthing lawyer, as well as a not-so-surprising—but decidedly welcome—proclivity for poking her nose into the business of others. The pages do indeed fly." —Marissa Stapley, The Globe and Mail " The Widows of Malabar Hill contains multitudes, tackling women’s history and rights, while treating readers to a riveting story." —The National Post "Perveen’s dogged pursuit of truth and justice for her clients is reminiscent of the debuts of Anne Perry’s Charlotte Ellison Pitt and Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs. But the multicultural, multi-faith milieu in which Perveen lives, works and attempts to find love both illuminates a bygone era and offers a thoughtful perspective relevant to today’s focus on women’s rights and equality." —Paula L. Defying convention while draped in a sari, Perveen is sure to join the leads of great mystery fiction." —Susan Elia MacNeal, New York Times bestselling author of the Maggie Hope mysteries "You get a mystery but you also get all the cultural details. I like that." —NBC New Day Northwest "I've been complaining for several years now that we don't have enough competent female leads in mystery series, and Sujata Massey has delivered with The Widows of Malabar Hill. I was taken in by this Law and Order-esque tale set in lush, swing-era Bombay, and I loved seeing Perveen proceed with a cool head and a fiery heart. Readers looking for a strong female heroine, a vivid setting and a strange mystery will find it here." —The News Tribune "There’s so much to admire in Massey’s writing: sumptuous details, attention to the senses and a tightly-plotted mystery that explores domains beyond normal trials and tribulations. It’s writing that’s easy to take for granted, but as we know, anything that easy is deceptively hard." —Baltimore Fishbowl "Massey deftly evokes the sights, the sounds, and the heat of Bombay as her clever and determined heroine, aided by a large supporting cast of sharply-drawn characters, sidesteps both custom and danger to deliver

Princeton Univers. Press Beyond Belief A1076340979
The remarkable story of the global movement championing the idea that evidence, not opinions, should guide our decisions Today, more and more people around the globe are using scientific evidence to figure out what works—in health, government and business as well as conservation, schools and parenting. This wasn’t always the case. This book tells the story of the evidence revolution—a worldwide movement that promotes evidence-based thinking—and shows how it can help us all, especially in an age of alternative facts. For many years, most medical advice was based on doctors’ opinions and conventional wisdom, not solid science. Helen Pearson describes how evidence-based medicine swept the world in the 1990s—becoming the predominant form of medicine practiced today—and how the idea that evidence should guide decisions is quietly transforming a host of other fields as well. Do police patrols reduce crime? Do performance appraisals boost job performance? Do welfare programs help the poor? Do smaller classes aid learning? Do smartphones harm teenagers? At a time when science is under attack and questionable claims run rampant, Pearson underscores the importance of evidence in all facets of our lives, empowering each of us to sift fact from falsehood and misinformation from the truth. Essential reading for the rational-minded, Beyond Belief is an engaging portrait of the mavericks, visionaries and rebels who share the simple belief that decisions based on evidence make the world a better place.

“Once a decade a book like The Every advances the frontier of literary excellence: a book that reflects our culture. Predicts our future. Worm-holes into our subconscious. Delivers artful and complex characters, metaphor, ideas, narrative. Provides percussive movements of levity, gravity, grace, suspense, hilarity.” —Kerri Arsenault, The Boston Globe “(A) great-grandchild of Zamyatin’s We, but now the 'perfect society' is Silicon Valley. Be careful what you wish for!” —Margaret Atwood, via Twitter “Eggers is a wonderful storyteller with an alert and defiant vision. His down-home decency means he pulls short of articulating a thought that recurred for me throughout reading The Every: threatened with spiritual extinction through conformism, sanitization, shame, inanity and surveillance, it might yet be our evil, our perversity, our psychopathology, our hate that prove the saving of us.” —Rob Doyle, The Guardian “Fiction like Eggers’s can show how socially destructive technology is normalized. . . . His exquisite portrayal of how this dynamic builds over time complements scholarly descriptions. . . . Eggers reveals something most of us can’t perceive in real time when we start using a new gadget promoted by a Big Tech company: the big picture and the likely endgame.” —Evan Selinger, Los Angeles Review of Books “Highly engaging, deeply unsettling . . . The strength of Eggers’ book lies in its wicked extrapolations of current technological fads to expose their latent flaws. . . . [Eggers’] writing always delivers a moral message in the most engaging literary form.” —John Thornhill, Financial Times “Corporate autocracy is explored through satire, social criticism, and emotion, to evoke ideas Eggers considers terrifying, funny and ludicrous. . . . The Every captures our time, the world around us, and the lives within it.” —Michael Silverblatt, KCRW “One has to admire Eggers’ belief in the power of fiction to make a difference, and his determination to use his publishing company to make a difference while remaining modestly pragmatic by necessity. The Every is smart, funny and very sharply pointed. If it doesn’t hit on every aspect of the diffused totalitarianism of the tech companies and the way smartphones, cameras and computers have negatively impacted humanity, it sure hits on many of them.” —Eric Ackland, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “[This is a] remarkable piece of satire, riven as it is with horribly plausible ideas and horribly good jokes. It’s one thing to sound a warning about how we are on a slippery slope to a kind of consumerist fascism where we exchange liberty for convenience. What Eggers does so well is make the Every alluring as well as alarming. . . . Eight years after The Circle was published, there is all too little that rings false about its predictions about social media. If the same is true of The Every, we are in even more trouble than we thought we were.” ―The Times “A darkly hilarious narrative that doesn’t just hit close to home. It burns the home down and then coldly assassinates all insurance adjusters who arrive on the scene to offer redemption.” —Eric Mack, CNET “Prescient; sardonic and more than a little frightening.” —Paul Wilner, San Francisco Examiner “Eggers has long established his almost supernatural storytelling skills, and this new book is positively mesmerizing and wholly original.” —BookPage (starred review) “A thought-provoking and wickedly dark satire.” —Brad Stone, Bloomberg “A prescient—and hilarious—meditation on the rise of tech giants and how our blind trust in them could ultimately be our demise.” —Harper’s Bazaar “What a perfect summation of our growing fears about Big Tech . . . cleverly speculating on the dystopia we’d face if these firms joined forces.” —Alison Beard, Harvard Business Review “Daringly explodes cherished assumptions . . . BoD – Books on Demand Monograph Association SEPIKE
In the globalized world under rapidly developing conditions of the digital economy, it is almost impossible to keep pace with the multi-dimensional informational flow that appears daily on the Internet and in real life. Scientists whose papers and researches are dedicated to the innovation issues, their different types, life cycles, evaluation of effectiveness and practical applicability, all of them agreed on the appearance of so called unclassifiable digital innovations. We have to be precise with this definition. First, digital innovations have penetrated inside all spheres of life and business nowadays. It is impossible to make any operation without using modern advanced technologies (actually, they are traced from being advanced not so far till usual/adapted/everyday). And the main criterion making innovations 'everyday' is the time. Whether it's the simplest operation of searching for a geographical location, the operation of buying or selling, the simplest transaction, communication, or the complicated operation of managing a business based on the business modeling, the use of modern marketing digital technologies, modeling of the ecological future and building long-term forecasts, all of abovementioned requires Internet usage, modern devices or other smart technologies. Thus, such variety of activity leads to complexity of digital innovation classification. Second, digital space is unlimited and unlimited by its nature that results just in generalization of common categorical directions. Third, each process, activity or even action take place in a concrete condition. It should be said, world economy transit to a personalized level, i.e. move from macro- via meso-, throughout of micro- to the digitally behavioral economics. That is why, in our opinion, it is difficult to classify digital innovations. Nowadays, it is not a top secret that with rapid digitalization paces, governments miss effective tools of regulation or intervention. More and more scientific publications, personal blogs and journalistic reports expose the problem of government insolvency in its intervention policies and the unjustifiedness of their actions. Neoclassic, neo-monetarist, neo-institutional and other neo-economic theories are unable to explain today's rapidly changing situation around the globe. They have exhausted themselves: there is no panacea that can revive the mega-economies of the highly developed countries that are sluggishly falling into the recession.

Raven Leilani's first novel reads like summer: sentences like ice that crackle or melt into a languorous drip; plot suddenly, wildly flying forward like a bike down a hill." -Jazmine Hughes, The New York Times Book Review "An irreverent intergenerational tale of race and class that's blisteringly smart and fan-yourself sexy." -Michelle Hart, O: The Oprah Magazine No one wants what no one wants. And how do we even know what we want? How do we know we're ready to take it? Edie is stumbling her way through her twenties-sharing a subpar apartment in Bushwick, clocking in and out of her admin job, making a series of inappropriate sexual choices. She is also haltingly, fitfully giving heat and air to the art that simmers inside her. And then she meets Eric, a digital archivist with a family in New Jersey, including an autopsist wife who has agreed to an open marriage-with rules. As if navigating the constantly shifting landscapes of contemporary sexual manners and racial politics weren't hard enough, Edie finds herself unemployed and invited into Eric's home-though not by Eric. She becomes a hesitant ally to his wife and a de facto role model to his adopted daughter. Edie may be the only Black woman young Akila knows. Irresistibly unruly and strikingly beautiful, razor-sharp and slyly comic, sexually charged and utterly absorbing, Raven Leilani's Luster is a portrait of a young woman trying to make sense of her life-her hunger, her anger-in a tumultuous era. It is also a haunting, aching description of how hard it is to believe in your own talent, and the unexpected influences that bring us into ourselves along the way.

Random House N.Y. How Democracies Die A1053131792
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The urgent and influential guide to the forces that have undermined democracies across the globe—forces running rampant in the United States today—hailed as “a touchstone” (The New Yorker) that “comes at exactly the right moment” (The Washington Post) “Comprehensive; enlightening, and terrifyingly timely.”—The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice) “[Levitsky and Ziblatt] expand the conversation beyond Trump and before him, to other countries and to the deep structure of American democracy and politics.”—Ezra Klein WINNER OF THE GOLDSMITH BOOK PRIZE SHORTLISTED FOR THE LIONEL GELBER PRIZE A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, Time, Foreign Affairs, WBUR, Paste Donald Trump’s presidency has raised a question that many of us never thought we’d be asking: Is our democracy in danger? Harvard professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt have spent more than twenty years studying the breakdown of democracies in Europe and Latin America, and they believe the answer is yes. Democracy no longer ends with a bang—in a revolution or military coup—but with a whimper: the slow, steady weakening of critical institutions, such as the judiciary and the press, and the gradual erosion of long-standing political norms. The good news is that there are several exit ramps on the road to authoritarianism. The bad news is that, by electing Trump, we have already passed the first one. Drawing on decades of research and a wide range of historical and global examples, from 1930s Europe to contemporary Hungary, Turkey, and Venezuela, to the American South during Jim Crow, Levitsky and Ziblatt show how democracies die. Now the question is, can our democracy be saved? Praise for How Democracies Die “If you only read one book for the rest of the year, read How Democracies Die. . . .This is not a book for just Democrats or Republicans. It is a book for all Americans. It is nonpartisan. It is fact based. It is deeply rooted in history. . . . The best commentary on our politics, no contest.” —Michael Morrell, former Acting Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (via Twitter) “A smart and deeply informed book about the ways in which democracy is being undermined in dozens of countries around the world, and in ways that are perfectly legal.” —Fareed Zakaria, CNN

Seven Dials More Than A Shirt A1072239341
LONGLISTED FOR THE 2025 WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD SHORTLISTED FOR THE BEST SPORTS WRITING OF THE YEAR AWARD AT THE 2026 SPORTS BOOK AWARDS A GUARDIAN SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2025 A WATERSTONES SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2025 ' This is a marvellous football book, although it is much more than that.' The Times ' More Than A Shirt shows why geopolitics keeps invading the pitch. ' The Economist 'D'Urso's simple conceit offers a sparklingly fresh snapshot' The Guardian 'Extensively researched and wonderfully written, Joey's book deserves to be read by all' Martin O'Neill ______________________________ Twenty-Two Football Shirts that explain the world, geopolitics and the biggest stories of our time Football is the world's most popular sport, and the shirts worn by teams and their supporters are its greatest means of cultural expression. Every year clubs launch new kits with increasingly extravagant marketing campaigns and convoluted explanations of how their designs reflect their history and local community. But football shirts are much more than just a symbol of which club we support. A seemingly innocuous combination of colours, sponsor logos and materials can all reflect the social values, financial struggles and political ideologies of the day, as geopolitical issues increasingly seep into every aspect of the game. Investigative journalist Joey D'Urso has travelled across the globe, combining on-the-ground reporting with unparalleled analysis to collate a list of the twenty-two football shirts that best explain the modern world.¿ More Than A Shirt¿will take fans on a journey from Birmingham to Belgrade and onto Medellin and Mumbai, outlining how we can see the war in Ukraine in the shirt of Schalke in Germany or China's foreign policy in West Bromwich Albion's; how the shirts of state-owned clubs are used for sportswashing; and why the French national kit embodies worldwide migration patterns. A compelling and eye-opening exploration, More Than A Shirt ¿is essential reading for any football fan and will change the way you think about the beautiful game's most universal symbol. ______________________________ 'Thoroughly resourceful and revealing' Jon Spurling, FourFourTwo 'Intelligent, thoughtful and brilliant' Chris Mason 'O riginal and innovative... a "Parts Unknown" for the game' Miguel Delaney 'Smart, warm and original' Matt Chorley, BBC Radio 5 Live

Harper Collins Publ. USA The State of Affairs A1048361026
“Perel is a master at what she does.” —The New Yorker “[Perel] knows the depth of your shame and the vibrancy of your lust.”- The New York Times From iconic couples’ therapist and bestselling author of Mating in Captivity comes a provocative and controversial look at infidelity with practical, honest, and empathetic advice for how to move beyond it. An affair can rob a couple of their relationship, their happiness, their very identity. And yet, this extremely common human experience—universally forbidden yet universally practiced—is poorly understood. Why do people cheat—even those in happy marriages? Why does an affair hurt so much? Do our romantic expectations of marriage set us up for betrayal? Is there such a thing as an affair-proof marriage? Is it possible to love more than one person at once? Can an affair ever help a marriage? For a decade, psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author Esther Perel traveled the globe and worked with hundreds of couples who have grappled with cheating. In this illuminating book, she weaves real-life case stories with incisive psychological and cultural analysis to provide insights and answers to help couples survive and thrive. Betrayal hurts, but it can be healed. An affair can even be the doorway to a new marriage—with the same person. Affairs, Perel argues, have a lot to teach us about modern relationships—what we expect, what we think we want, and what we feel entitled to. They offer a unique window into our personal and cultural attitudes about love, lust, and commitment. Through examining illicit love from multiple angles, Perel invites readers into an honest, enlightened, and entertaining exploration of modern relationships in its many variations. “Esther Perel is widely recognized as the world’s leading expert on marriage.”- Sunday Times Style “A fresh look at infidelity.” - Los Angeles Review of Books “Perel—a whip-smart emotional savant who pierces through human defenses with the efficiency of a surgeon—is a wonder to behold.”- Huffington Post “She doesn’t peddle in bromides or offer a shoulder to cry on—she’s too busy trying to shake you to your senses, insisting on your agency, your vitality, and your complicity in what happens in your marriage.” - The New York Times “[The State of Affairs] explores a vast landscape of the adulterous terrain . . . in a way that’s deeply humane and never preachy.” - NPR

Random House N.Y. Meat Eater A1028569633
"Revelatory . . . With every chapter, you get a history lesson, a hunting lesson, a nature lesson and a cooking lesson. . . . Meat Eater offers an overabundance to savor."-The New York Times Book Review Steven Rinella grew up in Twin Lake, Michigan, the son of a hunter who taught his three sons to love the natural world the way he did. As a child, Rinella devoured stories of the American wilderness, especially the exploits of his hero, Daniel Boone. He began fishing at the age of three and shot his first squirrel at eight and his first deer at thirteen. He chose the colleges he went to by their proximity to good hunting ground, and he experimented with living solely off wild meat. As an adult, he feeds his family from the food he hunts. Meat Eater chronicles Rinella's lifelong relationship with nature and hunting through the lens of ten hunts, beginning when he was an aspiring mountain man at age ten and ending as a thirty-seven-year-old Brooklyn father who hunts in the remotest corners of North America. He tells of having a struggling career as a fur trapper just as fur prices were falling; of a dalliance with catch-and-release steelhead fishing; of canoeing in the Missouri Breaks in search of mule deer just as the Missouri River was freezing up one November; and of hunting the elusive Dall sheep in the glaciated mountains of Alaska. Through each story, Rinella grapples with themes such as the role of the hunter in shaping America, the vanishing frontier, the ethics of killing, the allure of hunting trophies, the responsibilities that human predators have to their prey, and the disappearance of the hunter himself as Americans lose their connection with the way their food finds its way to their tables. Hunting, he argues, is intimately connected with our humanity; assuming responsibility for acquiring the meat that we eat, rather than entrusting it to proxy executioners, processors, packagers, and distributors, is one of the most respectful and exhilarating things a meat eater can do. A thrilling storyteller with boundless interesting facts and historical information about the land, the natural world, and the history of hunting, Rinella also includes after each chapter a section of "Tasting Notes" that draws from his thirty-plus years of eating and cooking wild game, both at home and over a campfire. In Meat Eater he paints a loving portrait of a way of life that is part of who we are as humans and as Americans. Praise for Meat Eater "Full of empathy and intelligence . . . In some sections of the book, the author's prose is so engrossing, so riveting, that it matches, punch for punch, the best sports writing."-The Wall Street Journal "Steven Rinella is one of the best nature writers of the last decade. . . . This book was a page-turner."-Tim Ferris "Rinella's writing is unerringly smart, direct, and sharply detailed."-The Boston Globe "A unique and valuable alternate view of where our food comes from."-Anthony Bourdain
