The cytoplasm of Gram-negative bacteria is bound by three layers: an inner membrane, a layer of peptidoglycan, and an outer membrane. The outer membrane is an asymmetric lipidic bilayer, with phospholipids on its inner surface and lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) on the outside, with the latter being the major component of the outer leaflet and covering nearly three-quarters of the total outer cell surface. All LPSs possess the same general chemical architecture independently of bacterial activity (pathogenic, symbiotic, commensal), ecological niche (human, animal, soil, plant, water), or growth conditions. Endotoxins are large amphiphilic molecules consisting of a hydrophilic polysaccharide component and a covalently bound hydrophobic and highly conserved lipid component, termed lipid A (the endotoxin subunit). The polysaccharide component can be divided into two subdomains: the internal and conserved core region as well as the more external and highly variable O-specific chain, also referred to as the O-antigen due to its immunogenic properties. LPSs are endotoxins, one of the most potent class of activators of the mammalian immune system; they can be released from cell surfaces of bacteria during multiplication, lysis, and death. LPS can act through its biological center (lipid A component) on various cell types, of which macrophages and monocytes are the most important.

So far, FLPs have been used in the metal-free reduction of some sterically demanding and reactive unsaturated compounds. Despite the tremendous progress in this young field of research (since 2006), many open questions about the reactivity of FLPs and limitations regarding the substrate scope existed. The directed modulation of the electronic parameters of the FLP partners provides several answers to fundamental questions in this field. Against former opinions, it could be shown, that H2-activation with electron poor Lewis-bases readily occurs at low temperatures (–80°C). Using this FLPs, the unprecedented metal-free catalytic hydrogenation of olefins was established. Combined kinetic and mechanistic studies unraveled thus far controversial observations of FLPs in H2-activation and catalysis. By using a weaker Lewis-acid, a dramatic increase in functional group tolerance and reactivity in FLP catalyzed hydrogenations was achieved: The first metal-free catalytic hydrogenation of nitroolefins and acrylates was developed. By the combination of gained knowledge during these studies, the first metal-free dehydrogenative SiN-coupling of silanes and amines was established. All herein presented findings rely on a profound comprehension of the electronic parameters of the molecules and the discovery of the transient H2-activation in metal-free catalysis. This concept was widely recognized and found use in subsequent independent applications. The development of these new metal-free catalysts allows the substitution of ecological severe and expensive heavy metals in the catalytic hydrogenation, world’s largest chemical industrial process.

Einleitung Membranverfahren finden heute in unterschiedlichsten Bereichen der Industrie Anwendung. Eine Membran ist definiert als ¿selektive Barriere zwischen zwei Phasen¿. Membranen können nach der Art ihrer Herstellung, der Porosität und dem verwendeten Material eingeteilt werden. Daher teilt man sie grob in biologische und synthetische Membranen ein. Der Stofftransport durch eine Membran kann aktiv oder passiv erfolgen und durch Druck-, Konzentrations- oder Temperaturdifferenz angetrieben werden [1]. Die Nanofiltration stellt einen Teilbereich der Membrantechnik dar. Nanofiltration wird im einfachsten Fall als ¿Prozess zwischen Ultrafiltration und Umkehrosmose¿ beschrieben [2]. Die IUPAC empfahl 1996 in der ¿Terminology for membranes and membrane processes¿ für die Nanofiltration folgende Definition: ¿pressure-driven membrane-based separation process in which particles and dissolved molecules smaller than about 2 nm are rejected¿. [3] Zielsetzung dieser Arbeit ist es, einen Überblick über die gängigen Technologien und Beispiele für Anwendungen der Nanofiltration zu geben. Außerdem sollen einige Methoden zur Membrancharakterisierung in Theorie und Praxis erläutert werden. Im theoretischen Teil der Arbeit wird ein Materialienüberblick über Nanofiltrationsmembranen gegeben, gefolgt von einem Kapitel zur Membransynthese. Im Folgenden werden praktische Anwendungen der Nanofiltration präsentiert. Ein wichtiges Thema in der Membranforschung ist die Leistungscharakterisierung und die Oberflächencharakterisierung von Nanofiltrationsmembranen. Ein praktisches Problem bei allen Filtrationsprozessen ist die Leistungsabnahme der Membran mit der Zeit, das wird als ¿Fouling¿ bezeichnet. Optimale Fouling-Eigenschaften werden durch spezielle Konstruktion von Membranmodulen und Auswahl geeigneter Membranmaterialien für einen Filtrationsprozess erreicht. Nach der Membran selbst, ist das Membranmodul in jedem Membranprozess die nächste größere Organisationseinheit. Im praktischen Teil der Arbeit wurde ein Membranmessstand zur Prozesssimulation gebaut, zwei Nanofiltrationsmembranen wurden mittels Kontaktwinkelmessungen charakterisiert und Zetapotentialmessungen der Membranoberflächen durchgeführt. Weiters wurden elektronenmikroskopische Aufnahmen des Membranmaterials gemacht.

This textbook introduces the reader to quantum theory and quantum chemistry. The textbook is meant for 2 nd – 3 rd year bachelor students of chemistry or physics, but also for students of related disciplines like materials science, pharmacy, and bioinformatics. At first, quantum theory is introduced, starting with experimental results that made it inevitable to go beyond classical physics. Subsequently, the Schrödinger equation is discussed in some detail. Some few examples for which the Schrödinger equation can be solved exactly are treated with special emphasis on relating the results to real systems and interpreting the mathematical results in terms of experimental observations. Ultimately, approximate methods are presented that are used when applying quantum theory in the field of quantum chemistry for the study of real systems like atoms, molecules, and crystals. Both the foundations for the different methods and a broader range of examples of their applications are presented. The textbook assumes no prior knowledge in quantum theory. Moreover, special emphasis is put on interpreting the mathematical results and less on an exact mathematical derivations of those. Finally, each chapter closes with a number of questions and exercises that help in focusing on the main results of the chapter. Many of the exercises include answers.
