In Visions of the Press in Britain, 1850-1950, Mark Hampton argues that qualities expected of the contemporary British press--lively writing, speed, impartiality, depth, and the ability to topple corrupt governments by informing readers--are not obvious attributes of journalism but derive from more than a century of debate. He analyzes the various historical conceptions of the British press that helped to create its modern role, and demonstrates that these conceptions were intimately involved in the emergence of mass democracy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Hampton surveys a diversity of sources--Parliamentary speeches and commissions, books, pamphlets, periodicals and select private correspondence--in order to identify how governmental elites, the educated public, professional journalists, and industry moguls characterized the political and cultural function of the press. The resulting blend of cultural history and media sociology demonstrates how once optimistic visions of the press have given way to more pessimistic contemporary views about the power of the mass media. Tourism constitutes one of the quickly evolving sectors. So far little research of strategic management in these emerging tourism markets has been conducted. Goal of this study is to display the German National Tourist Organization's and Switzerland Tourism's strategic management as they are trying to market their home country as a destination for tourists from the emerging markets of China and India respectively. An explanatory model was created to be able to analyze and identify macro-environmental, industry-specific, and organization-specific factors that influence strategic management in these markets. Research was conducted on the basis of a documentary analysis and complementary interviews with the responsible managers of the two National Tourism Offices as well as other experts from the industry. Results show that both national tourism organizations use similar differentiation strategies, marketing their country as a destination by the use of themes, independently of the market's characteristics, such as size and growth rate. The reason seems to be that they are able to neglect the external threat caused by the threat of substitutes and customers' negotiating power in their management strategies. However, the importance and power of informal networks - especially in Asian markets - and the small financial budgets seem to be the key factors explaining why national tourism organizations choose the use of multiplier effects as a strategy to market their country especially in emerging tourism markets. This strategy focuses marketing activity on approaching intermediaries, such as tour operators or media, instead of the final consumer (tourist) as it is practiced in established markets.

She reveals in the work of three novelists who emigrated from India to the United States-Bharati Mukherjee, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, and Amitav Ghosh-a concept of Americanness linked to cosmopolitanism. In Transnational America Grewal makes a powerful, nuanced case that the United States must be understood-and studied-as a dynamic entity produced and transformed both within and far beyond its territorial boundaries.

Tourism constitutes one of the quickly evolving sectors. So far little research of strategic management in these emerging tourism markets has been conducted. Goal of this study is to display the German National Tourist Organization's and Switzerland Tourism's strategic management as they are trying to market their home country as a destination for tourists from the emerging markets of China and India respectively. An explanatory model was created to be able to analyze and identify macro-environmental, industry-specific, and organization-specific factors that influence strategic management in these markets. Research was conducted on the basis of a documentary analysis and complementary interviews with the responsible managers of the two National Tourism Offices as well as other experts from the industry. Results show that both national tourism organizations use similar differentiation strategies, marketing their country as a destination by the use of themes, independently of the market's characteristics, such as size and growth rate. The reason seems to be that they are able to neglect the external threat caused by the threat of substitutes and customers' negotiating power in their management strategies. However, the importance and power of informal networks - especially in Asian markets - and the small financial budgets seem to be the key factors explaining why national tourism organizations choose the use of multiplier effects as a strategy to market their country especially in emerging tourism markets. This strategy focuses marketing activity on approaching intermediaries, such as tour operators or media, instead of the final consumer (tourist) as it is practiced in established markets.

The study of the development of flowering plants may be said to be in the throes of a revolution. This has come about after a period of neglect and stagnation in the field and has been triggered by the power of recombinant DNA technology to analyze genetic information and by a fruitful cross-fertilization between physiology, genetics, and molecular biology. Whereas considerations of developmental phenomena were at one time largely restricted to the structure and physiology of a wide selection of plants, recent molecular and genetic approaches are focused on one or two model systems. Notwithstanding the difficulty of having to relate developmental mechanisms in a few experimentally attractive models to the enormous range of plants, the use of model systems has gained wide accep tance. This book is intended to meet the need for a unified account of the general principles of development of flowering plants representing structural, physiolog ical, biochemical, genetic, and molecular perspectives. There is less danger that irrelevant problems are followed or that non-medical researchers like statisticians will domi nate the studies. We have deliberately avoided to join or organize multicenter stu dies believing that a larger output of data cannot outweigh the disadvantages of possible mistakes and errors through lack of contact and controversial conceptions among the coworkers. We hope to show that studies planned for screening of as many as 10 000 probands can be performed at relatively low expense. Satellite Earth observation (EO) data have already exceeded the petabyte scale and are increasingly freely and openly available from different data providers. This poses a number of issues in terms of volume (e.g., data volumes have increased 10× in the last 5 years); velocity (e.g., Sentinel-2 is capturing a new image of any given place every 5 days); and variety (e.g., different types of sensors, spatial/spectral resolutions). Traditional approaches to the acquisition, management, distribution, and analysis of EO data have limitations (e.g., data size, heterogeneity, and complexity) that impede their true information potential to be realized. Addressing these big data challenges requires a change of paradigm and a move away from local processing and data distribution methods to lower the barriers caused by data size and related complications in data management. To tackle these issues, EO data cubes (EODC) are a new paradigm revolutionizing the way users can store, organize, manage, and analyze EO data.
