Penguin LLC US Twelve Angry Men A1002588513
A landmark American drama that inspired a classic film and a Broadway revival featuring an introduction by David Mamet A blistering character study and an examination of the American melting pot and the judicial system that keeps it in check, Twelve Angry Men holds at its core a deeply patriotic faith in the U.S. legal system. The play centers on Juror Eight, who is at first the sole holdout in an 11-1 guilty vote. Eight sets his sights not on proving the other jurors wrong but rather on getting them to look at the situation in a clear-eyed way not affected by their personal prejudices or biases. Reginald Rose deliberately and carefully peels away the layers of artifice from the men and allows a fuller picture to form of them and of America, at its best and worst. After the critically acclaimed teleplay aired in 1954, this landmark American drama went on to become a cinematic masterpiece in 1957 starring Henry Fonda, for which Rose wrote the adaptation. More recently, Twelve Angry Men had a successful, and award-winning, run on Broadway. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Spring Street Publishing The Fairy Tale Girl A1037566156
In 1977, the year I turned thirty, three life-changing things happened. I got married. I got a kitty. And I painted my first picture. All of it went into the diaries I've been keeping since I was in my 20s, because most of the time, my life has felt like a miracle and I didn't want to forget any of it. And that's what The Fairy Tale Girl is about. It's an illustrated memoir, watercolored and hand-lettered, taken from my diaries and photo albums; a story of growing up in the lovely 1950s, the oldest of eight children, coming of age in the 1960s and '70s, discovering art, cooking, feminism, rock and roll, and love. When my heart was broken into a thousand pieces, and the grief was so terrible I was inspired to run away from home in the nave hope of escaping the pain, I never gave up believing in and searching for my childhood dreams of happily ever after. If you like time travel, I think you've come to the right place. With Love, Susan Branch

Open Letter The Sailor from Gibraltar A1002961097
Disaffected, bored with his career at the French Colonial Ministry (where he has copied out birth and death certificates for eight years), and disgusted by a mistress whose vapid optimism arouses his most violent misogyny, the narrator of The Sailor from Gibraltar finds himself at the point of complete breakdown while vacationing in Florence. After leaving his mistress and the Ministry behind forever, he joins the crew of the Gibraltar, a yacht captained by Anna, a beautiful American in perpetual search of her sometime lover, a young man known only as the "Sailor from Gibraltar." First published in 1952, this early novel of Duras's--which was made into a film in 1967--shows those preoccupations which have so deeply concerned her in her later novels and film scripts: loneliness, boredom, the inevitability and intangibility of love. The lambent poetry of the book, and the limning of a woman's mind, her love and sense of the inevitability of that love are singularly Marguerite Duras.

GRIN The Instrumentalization of the Cannibal in Daniel Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe" A1044362702
Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2016 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Note: 1.7, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Daniel Defoe¿s novel "Robinson Crusoe" (1719) revolves around the Englishman Robinson Crusoe, who, after suffering shipwreck in a storm strands on a deserted island as the sole survivor of an expedition. After twenty-four of his total twenty-eight years on the island he discovers that native cannibals occasionally visit the island in order to kill and eat their captives. When Crusoe rescues one of them the captive is grateful and stays with Crusoe as his servant. Crusoe names him Friday after the day of their first encounter and teaches him the English language and eventually converts him to Christianity. "Robinson Crusoe" is considered a classic which has been issued in at least 700 editions and translated into several languages. The story has been made into several movies. I want to argue, that the motif of the cannibal is instrumentalized in the novel in order to justify the conquering and civilizing of savage natives by the dominant Western world. By depicting dreadful cannibalistic acts and evoking horror and revulsion the subjects of colonialism are intended to be dehumanized. I will begin the seminar paper with a contextual chapter on cannibalism by presenting the definition and origin of the term ¿cannibal¿, as well as the existence of cannibalism in literature by giving various examples from classic epic to contemporary novels. Then, I will focus on Defoe¿s Robinson Crusoe and illustrate the protagonist¿s constant fear of being eaten. In a next step, I will focus on Crusoe¿s encounters with the cannibals and in a further step on his meeting of Friday and his representation of the latter. Before drawing the conclusion, I will analyze the relationship between Crusoe and Friday.

Penguin Books UK One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich A1003298333
Bringing into harsh focus the daily struggle for existence in a Soviet gulag, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is translated by Ralph Parker in Penguin Modern Classics. This brutal, shattering glimpse of the fate of millions of Russians under Stalin shook Russia and shocked the world when it first appeared. Discover the importance of a piece of bread or an extra bowl of soup, the incredible luxury of a book, the ingenious possibilities of a nail, a piece of string or a single match in a world where survival is all. Here safety, warmth and food are the first objectives. Reading it, you enter a world of incarceration, brutality, hard manual labour and freezing cold - and participate in the struggle of men to survive both the terrible rigours of nature and the inhumanity of the system that defines their conditions of life. Though twice-decorated for his service at the front during the Second World War, Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008) was arrested in 1945 for making derogatory remarks about Stalin, and sent to a series of brutal Soviet labour camps in the Arctic Circle, where he remained for eight years. Released after Stalin's death, he worked as a teacher, publishing his novel One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich with the approval of Nikita Khrushchev in 1962, to huge success. His 1967 novel Cancer Ward, as well as his magnum opus The Gulag Archipelago, were not as well-received by Soviet authorities, and not long after being awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1970, Solzhenitsyn was deported from the USSR. In 1994, after twenty years in exile, Solzhenitsyn made his long-awaited return to Russia. If you enjoyed One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, you might also like Yevgeny Zamyatin's We, available in Penguin Classics. Altered Nature Press Ashlesha A1047819936
For Mature Readers. Rex Tjin’s life has never been normal. It just took him a while to notice the difference. Not every kid spent their summer vacations learning survival tactics on paintball fields in rural Pennsylvania, could fieldstrip a .9mm and slap it back together at military-accepted speed, or had really good instincts for just knowing things—including when to get out of the line of fire. (Most of the time.) When Rex finally realized his family was different from his friends and neighbors in Kutztown, he didn’t care. He’s the third of eight kids who are all crazy, and they drive each other nuts, but they love each other. To every single one of them, that’s the most important part. Four of them go into the military, thinking long-term careers. Then Rex’s younger brother dies in Iraq in 2005. It’s a disaster that isn’t his fault, but a loss he can’t stop blaming himself for. He bows out after only eight years instead of the planned twenty. Rex spends the next decade trying to figure out what to do with the rest of his life. He attends a college he can’t remember graduating from. He doesn’t even know if he collected a diploma. Rex didn’t care; school was something to fill the empty spaces in his life left behind by a lost sibling and the mental inertia of leaving the intensity of Special Forces. Picking up available contracting work through the Department of Defense starts to fill those empty spaces nicely. Rex has a conscience and the ability to say "No thanks" if he doesn’t like the job; he gets to shoot things again (or turn them into craters); and the pay is great. Awesome. On his thirty-sixth birthday, Rex goes to a bar looking for nothing more than brandy and a chance to mourn another loss in peace. Instead, he meets a fascinating redhead who also works for the DoD. Rex wasn’t planning to get involved with anyone, but sometimes you just fit with someone, and he fits with Euan Ambrus very well. Rex’s new favorite redhead is also the reason why 2016 decides to push the envelope on what’s normal, even for him. If he’s going to make an enemy out of an organization within the federal government, it might as well be one that’s been up to sci-fi levels of weird since 1951…the same organization that’s ultimately responsible for Rex’s eerily precise instincts.

KNV Besorgung Anatomy of Authoritarianism in the Arab Republics A1038085547
By examining the system of authoritarianism in eight Arab republics, Joseph Sassoon portrays life under these regimes and explores the mechanisms underpinning their resilience. How did the leadership in these countries create such enduring systems? What was the economic system that prolonged the regimes' longevity, but simultaneously led to their collapse? Why did these seemingly stable regimes begin to falter? This book seeks to answer these questions by utilizing the Iraqi archives and memoirs of those who were embedded in these republics: political leaders, ministers, generals, security agency chiefs, party members, and business people. Taking a thematic approach, the book begins in 1952 with the Egyptian Revolution and ends with the Arab uprisings of 2011. It seeks to deepen our understanding of the authoritarianism and coercive systems that prevailed in these countries and the difficult process of transition from authoritarianism that began after 2011.
