The question, whether the protagonist's hate towards mankind can be equated with a possible misanthropy of the author shall not be discussed here. Likewise, the topic of the author's conception of man will not be examined. The author's intentions are deliberately excluded to keep the focus on the narrative's interpretation and relevant secondary literature. Therefore, Swift's satirical intentions regarding the portrayal of the main character Gulliver will not be taken into account either. Since Gulliver's self-knowledge, which makes him become a misanthropist was one of the most discussed issues regarding the reception of Gulliver's Travels, I want to investigate the reasons, motivations and stages of Gulliver's conversion, find possibly crucial experiences that lead to his cognition and scrutinize, whether his development is portrayed as credible or not. In the first part I will scrutinize Gulliver's attitude to the Houyhnhnms and the influence of his expulsion on his morale. In the second part of my essay I will concentrate on Gulliver becoming a misanthrope and the way his new conception of man is shaped.

At the 10th Hanseatic Conference 2015 in Hamburg, representatives from business organisations, academic institutions and policy makers from all countries around the Baltic Sea exchanged their experiences. This book contains the presented papers and a summary of the participants' discussion. Vocational training has dramatically lost its appeal. More and more young people rather opt for study programmes at the university, and refuse to learn practical skills in vocational education. However, the qualifications of the high number of academics do not match the demand of SMEs for skilled workers and entrepreneurs, as their knowledge is mostly theoretical. At the same, due to demographic changes, the number of school leavers in the Baltic Sea Region is declining. Both developments have led to a dramatic shortage of skilled workers and entrepreneurs which is severely limiting growth and innovativeness of SMEs. In order to overcome this crisis, dual vocational training and dual degree study programmes have to be promoted substantially. In dual vocational training enterprises can actively influence and improve the quality of the education their apprentices receive; and in dual degree study programmes students can test and apply their theoretical knowledge, which they acquire at the university, simultaneously in the enterprises. The contributors of this book describe how this reform of education policy can be implemented in practice.

In terms of the negative results of PISA, the approach to reading comprehension has immensely changed. Didactics have found out that tackling (literary) texts in the traditional way hardly motivates learnes to achieve good results. Therefore, it is more useful to centre topics and literary texts which have significance for the learners, treat them in a different way and employing new methods, such as reading different texts in the English lessons (for example "Harry Potter") and applying creative writing. Reading, writing, learning English should make sense to the pupils. "ESL2/EFL learners need a reason to read."3 Fortunately, these changes are even visible in the current curricula guidelines. In my term paper, I will lay the focus on pre-, while- and post-reading-activities with regard to literature. Firstly, I will present the aims and advantages of while- and postreading- activities, then I will carry out a practical approach by suggesting a short story ("Peter's Beach") and presenting some post-reading-activities and discussing them. Bucharest, 1968; lives and works in Hamburg) brings clashing cultural, social, and political phenomena and events into focus. She uncovers cultural traditions and translates them into a contemporary register. In the works featured in this volume, Aurelia Mihai links aspects of documentation and research with fiction in a multifaceted way. Thus legends and historical incidents are frequently the occasion or the starting point for a sociocritical examination of the present. The various, in part contrasting perspectives and realities that result in the process are artfully woven together in Aurelia Mihai’s powerful visual language and merge to become evocative images. With slow camera shots she creates an inquiry into our individual concepts of reality. In doing so, she makes an important contribution to how we contemplate video art. At the same time, she reflects on the medium itself and reexamines it time and again as to how it can be made to express the artist’s vision of the past and the present. “LUPA” (2014–2016) is an investigative art project in which a work of ancient art (The Capitoline Wolf ) and the vicissitudes of its history exemplify the accretion of meanings that constitutes an object’s contemporary significance. Für die Ausstellungsreihe Gegen­ wärtig im Felix-Nussbaum-Haus Osnabrück reiste die Künstlerin ins südfranzösische St. Cyprien, wo Nussbaum 1940 als „feindlicher Ausländer” in einem Lager interniert war, und verband diesen Ort mit Banyuls-sur-Mer, von wo aus im selben Jahr Walter Benjamin versuchte, nach Spanien zu fliehen. Beides sind Orte der Gefangenschaft, der Flucht, der Hoffnung und des Widerstands. Für Taubes Geäst untersuchte Diehl die Gemälde Nussbaums hinsichtlich ihrer peripheren Bildelemente und drang tief in ihre Erzählungen ein. Ihre Fotografien machen das Abwesende anwesend, verleihen dem Unsichtbaren eine temporäre Sichtbarkeit. Johanna Diehl, geb. 1977 in Hamburg, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. She is interested in the extent to which an idea, ideology, or memory takes shape and becomes visible in the world of things—in forms and configurations, and in the traces that are left behind. For the exhibition series Presence, on show in the Felix-Nussbaum-Haus Osnabrück, the artist travelled to Saint-Cyprien in southern France—where; in 1940, Nussbaum was interned in a camp as an ”enemy alien“. Diehl forges a link between this site and Banyuls-sur-Mer, Walter Benjamin’s jumping-off point in his attempt to flee to Spain that same year. Both are places of imprisonment, escape, hope, and resistance. For Deaf Branches, Diehl studied the peripheral pictorial elements in Nussbaum’s paintings, penetrating deep into their narratives.
