Scholars commonly take the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen of 1789, written during the French Revolution, as the starting point for the modern conception of human rights. According to the Declaration, the rights of man are held to be universal, at all times and all places. But as recent crises around migrants and refugees have made obvious, this idea, sacred as it might be among human rights advocates, is exhausted. It's long past time to reconsider the principles on which Western economic and political norms rest. This book advocates for a tradition of political universality as an alternative to the juridical universalism of the Declaration. Insurgent universality isn't based on the idea that we all share some common humanity but, rather, on the democratic excess by which people disrupt and reject an existing political and economic order. Going beyond the constitutional armor of the representative state, it brings into play a plurality of powers to which citizens have access, not through the funnel of national citizenship but in daily political practice. We can look to recent history to see various experiments in cooperative and insurgent democracy: the Indignados in Spain, the Arab Spring, Occupy, the Zapatistas in Mexico, and, going further back, the Paris Commune, the 1917 peasant revolts during the Russian Revolution, and the Haitian Revolution. This book argues that these movements belong to the common legacy of insurgent universality, which is characterized by alternative trajectories of modernity that have been repressed, hindered, and forgotten. Massimiliano Tomba examines these events to show what they could have been and what they can still be. As such he explores how their common legacy can be reactivated. Insurgent Universality analyzes the manifestos and declarations that came out of these experiments considering them as collective works of an alternative canon of political theory that challenges the great names of the Western pantheon of political thought and builds bridges between European and non-European political and social experiments.

Still in April 2010, the German newspaper Zeit pointed out that the financial industry¿s power has prevented new financial regulation. Although financial lobby influence is certainly not the only reason, why regulatory reform is not getting further, it has a strong influence in the policy process and overshadows other interests. In Europe, it is especially effective: The European market has been continuously liberalized, but supervision did not keep up with this trend. Financial regulation must satisfy the international level but should also be flexible enough to grasp national differences. Moreover countries are played off against each other. When a single country decides to regulate more strictly, companies can always threaten to leave the country (Stichele 2008: 40, 48). All these considerations give good reason to analyze how the financial industry seeks influence in the European policy process. This paper aims to introduce the different institutional channels where influence can be exercised.

The legal framework of liberalization of the energy markets requires gas network operators to publish flow capacities at their entry and exit stations. In combination with publicly available knowledge about the gas transportation infrastructures, an overall hydraulic simulation of the gas flows over Germany and Europe becomes possible. Considering the logistics and integrity of the natural gas supply system, it is obvious that such models are significant to present the overall gas flow, assess detailed infrastructures and analyze emergency situations based on national or European levels and from a technical point of view. In this thesis, the author depicts the workflow and methodologies of modeling such large scale and complex gas grids, using the German H-gas system as an example. The established model is able to simulate the major gas transmission systems in Germany, with consideration of the storage facilities. The modeling work is described in this thesis from three major aspects: the creation of network topology, the definition of simulation scenarios and the methodologies for capacity calculations. The author further explains in detail the integration of available databases and some simplification and assumption approaches developed for the modeling work. By investigating on German gas consumption sectors and gas demand behaviors over years, various scenarios are defined and simulated. Through the simulations, the technical potentials for both individual entry / exit points and the nationwide grid can be analyzed. The investigation in this thesis also illustrates several case studies to technically evaluate new infrastructures and German “energy transformation” technologies (e.g. synthetic methane from "Power–to–Gas" projects and “Nuclear Moratorium”). Some bottleneck areas in the existing gas transmission system under such newly developed conditions are presented in the model, which could provide good reference information for future pipeline grid extension and facilities enhancement.

The society¿s progressive program advocated for socialist values, social justice and women rights. Against the background of these modern and leftist values though, the society¿s position on imperialism is somehow astonishing. One of the motives for its supportive stand on imperialism lies in the yet valid division they made between domestic and international politics. Edward Pease¿s The History of the Fabian society addresses the international system, for example under terms of efficiency and colonialism. According to him ¿the only valid moral right to national ¿ possession is that the occupier is making adequate use of it for the benefit of the world community.¿ From the ¿International Socialist point of view¿ national sovereignty and noninterference are not acceptable and the world must strive for an ¿international civilization¿ according to socialist merits. This monograph is devoted to ‘Mother Russia’ as a principal concept of Russian nationalism. The volume demonstrates the role of the mythology of ‘Mother Russia’ in inventing and reinventing Russianness, in producing Ours and Theirs, in constructing external and internal Enemies, in legitimating and delegitimating power within the political system of Russia. Chapter I ‘Nationalism; Gender, and War: A Methodological Framework’ starts with definitions of the study’s key terms – gender, nationalism, identity, and discourse. Interpreting gender as a referential, context-dependent and heterogeneous phenomenon as well as showing its implication in power relations, the author demonstrates that all principal concepts of nationalism as a discursive formation intersect with gender discourse. This, on the one hand, comes about through the role of nationalism in the formation of gender order during Modernity, and, on the other hand, through the potential of gender to serve as an effective marker facilitating the process of inclusion and exclusion in the making of collective identity. The author argues that gender discourse serves as a weapon of war, playing an important role in national mobilization, as well as in the assertion of supremacy in war, both militarily and morally. The aim of Chapter II ‘“Mother Russia” Through the Lenses of Postcolonial Studies’ is a general explanation of the symbol. ‘Mother Russia’ is rooted in a myth-symbol complex of Russian culture. At the same time, it has also been developed under the influence of the discourse on Modernity that has divided the world into ‘the West and the Rest’. In Western culture, ‘Mother Russia’ serves as a ‘symbolic border-guard’ between a ‘masculine’ West and ‘feminine’ Russia. ‘Mother Russia’ keeps functioning as a factor of the identity of the West in the post-Cold War era. Contemporary Western mass media actively exploits this symbol to mark a border of the West and to designate Russia as irrational, archaic, chaotic, mysterious, unpredictable, and passive. In Russian culture, the development of ‘Mother Russia’ is, to a considerable extent, a reaction to these practices of her ‘othering’ within Western discourse. The idea of the femininity of Russia is accepted, first of all, in the ‘messianic’ discourse, which treats Russia as the savior of the West and of all humankind. The author shows that some other non-Western cultures use the similar ‘authofeminization’ accompanied by a representation of the Western civilization as extremely masculine, ‘dangerous masculine’. The symbol is exploited in the politics of identity of Russian nationalism to provide unity for the Russian nation. By determining ‘Ours’; the discourse on ‘Mother Russia’ also produces Enemies both in national and gender dimensions. Chapter III ‘“Mother Russia” in the History of 20th Century’ analyzes the major phases of development of the symbol during the last century, focusing on its functions in wars (including the Russo-Japanese war, First and Second World Wars, as well as Cold War), revolutions and civil conflicts. It focuses on the mutual influence of ‘Mother Russia’; on the one side, and national, military, political, imperial, and gender discourses in Russia, on the other. The study shows how various discourses in- and outside Russia contest for the interpretation of ‘Mother Russia’ so that to speak on behalf of her. This discursive struggle around the maternal image of Russia accounts for the polysemy of this symbol and heterogeneity of national identity in general.
