University Of Minnesota Press Troll Magic A1062624535
A collection of macabre and magical folklore from the “godfather” of the Norwegian troll Across the stillness of the sprawling mountain heath, the shadow of the mighty forest falls, its wildness calling to the child in all of us. Here the Hidden Folk assemble: the stalwart little nisse, farmyard spirit and irrepressible prankster; the seductive hulder, with her crown of flowers and cow’s tail; the fiddling fossegrim, summoning the music of wind and water; and most fearsome and enchanting of all, the one-eyed troll, head high above the treetops. A veritable bestiary of Nordic folk creatures was conjured by artist Theodor Kittelsen, whose late nineteenth-century paintings and illustrations gave these macabre and magical figures their enduring forms. In this book, first published as Troldskab in 1892, Kittelsen spins tales of wonder around creatures rumored to haunt the fields, forests, and waterfalls of Norway. Striding, gamboling, and slithering across these pages are witches and gnomes and sea monsters, fiery dragons waking from their stiff-winged slumber, mermaids rising from the deep, and the sly, shapeshifting nØkk. But first and foremost are the trolls, hapless, horrible, or just plain silly, working their spells and making their mischief to the terror and delight of the presumably human reader. Tailoring his whimsical artistic style to each tale, Kittelsen’s stories, in Tiina Nunnally’s nimble translation, reveal a Nordic world of wonder, myth, and magic as real as the imagination allows.

Flatiron Books Bringer of Dust A1073855060
In this highly anticipated second book in the Talents Trilogy, the world of the dead is closer than you think. Agrigento, Sicily, 1883. With the orsine destroyed, Cairndale lies in ruins, and Marlowe has vanished. His only hope of rescue lies in a fabled second orsine-long-hidden, thought lost-which might not even exist. But when a body is discovered in the shadow of Cairndale, a body wreathed in the corrupted dust of the drughr, Charlie and the Talents realize there is even more at stake than they'd feared. For a new drughr has arisen, ferocious, horned, seemingly able to move in their world at will-and it is not alone. A malevolent figure, known only as the Abbess, desires the dust for her own ends. And deep in the world of the dead, a terrible evil stirs-an evil that the corrupted dust just might hold the secret to reviving or destroying forever. So the dark journey begun in Ordinary Monsters surges forward, from the sinister underworld of the London exiles, to the mysteries of a sunlit villa in nineteenth-century Sicily, to the deep catacombs hidden under Paris. Against bone witches, mud glyphics, and a house of twilight that exists in a netherworld all its own, the Talents must work together-if they are to have any hope of staving off the world of the dead, and saving their long-lost friend.

Bloomsbury Academic The Blazing World A1071300045
Bloomsbury presents The Blazing World by Jonathan Healey, read by Oliver Hembrough.A WATERSTONES, TELEGRAPH, ECONOMIST AND NEW YORKER BOOK OF THE YEARA major new history of England's turbulent seventeenth century and how it marked the birth of a new world'This is a wonderful book, exhaustively researched, vigorously argued and teeming with the furious joy of seventeenth-century life' The Times'A brilliant, bloody account of England's most dramatic century . . . Thrilling' TelegraphThe seventeenth century began as the English suddenly found themselves ruled by a Scotsman, and ended in the shadow of an invasion by the Dutch. Under James I, the country suffered terrorism and witch panics. Under his son Charles, state and society collapsed into civil war, to be followed by an army coup and regicide. For a short time – for the only time in history – England was a republic. There were bitter struggles over faith and no boundaries to politics. In the coffee shops and alehouses of plague-ridden London, new ideas were forged that were angry, populist and almost impossible for monarchs to control.Despite the radical changes that transformed England, few today understand the story of this revolutionary age. Leaders like Oliver Cromwell, Charles II, and William of Orange have been reduced to caricatures, while major turning points like the Civil War and the Glorious Revolution have become shrouded in myth and misunderstanding. Yet the seventeenth century has never been more relevant. The British constitution is once again being contested, and we face a culture war reminiscent of when the Roundheads fought the Cavaliers. From raw politics to religious divisions, civil wars to witch trials, plague to press freedoms, The Blazing World is the story of a strange but fascinating century, told in sparkling detail. Drawing on vast archives, Jonathan Healey refreshes our understanding of public figures while simultaneously taking us into the lives of ordinary people to illuminate a revolutionary society that forged a new world.

Editorial RM Remedios Varo: The Mexican Years A1024788896
Between mysticism and modernity: the magical surrealism of Remedios Varo Remedios Varo: The Mexican Years offers a definitive survey of the life and work of a singularly appealing and mysterious Surrealist painter. Born and raised in Spain, Remedios Varo received her earliest training in Madrid before fleeing the Spanish Civil War in 1937 to join Surrealist circles in Paris. The outbreak of World War II forced her to take refuge in Mexico, where she remained until her untimely death in 1963, and where she created her most enduring work. Known as one of the three "brujas" (witches) active in the Mexico City art milieu, Varo shared an interest in esotericism with fellow painter Leonora Carrington and a range of interests in science, philosophy and the literature of German Romanticism with the photographer Kati Horna. For some ten years, from the mid-1950s until her death in 1963, Varo devoted herself to creating an extraordinary dreamlike oeuvre, on the threshold between mysticism and modernity. Her beautifully crafted images of medieval interiors, occult workshops and androgynous figures engaged in alchemical pursuits evoke the eerie allegories of Hieronymus Bosch, esoteric engravings and the charm and lure of fairytales. This catalogue includes a complete illustrated chronology with never before published images and describes Varo's role in the Mexican Surrealist movement and her relations with Luis Buñuel, Octavio Paz, Benjamin Péret, Alice Rahon, Wolfgang Paalen and many others. Remedios Varo (1908-1963) fled the Spanish Civil War and then World War II to settle in Mexico where she helped establish a Mexican Surrealist movement and painted visions that combined modernism with mysticism. She was married to the leading French Surrealist Benjamin Péret.

Random House Worlds Shattered A1032997563
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER In the seventh book in The Iron Druid Chronicles, two-thousand-year-old Druid Atticus O'Sullivan and his apprentice Granuaile take on an ancient plague-summoning demon and confront a rebellion of the Fae in Tír na nóg. "Funny, razor-sharp . . . plenty of action, humor, and mythology."-Booklist (starred review) Atticus's apprentice Granuaile is at last a full Druid herself. What's more, Atticus has defrosted an archdruid frozen in time long ago, a father figure (of sorts) who now goes by the modern equivalent of his old Irish name: Owen Kennedy. And Owen has some catching up to do. Atticus takes pleasure in the role reversal, as the student is now the teacher. Between busting Atticus's chops and trying to fathom a cell phone, Owen must also learn English. For Atticus, the jury's still out on whether the wily old coot will be an asset in the epic battle with the Norse god Loki-or merely a pain in the arse. But Atticus isn't the only one with daddy issues. Granuaile faces a great challenge: to exorcise a sorcerer's spirit that is possessing her father in India. Even with the help of the witch Laksha, Granuaile may be facing a crushing defeat. As the trio of Druids deals with pestilence-spreading demons, bacon-loving yeti, fierce flying foxes, and frenzied Fae, they're hoping that this time, three's a charm. "Uproariously entertaining in a way that [Kevin] Hearne is uniquely able to achieve . . . [Shattered] has the feeling of a new beginning for its hero and for the series."-RT Book Reviews "This series just gets bigger and better, and Shattered shows no signs of it slowing down."-Vampire Book Club Don't miss any of The Iron Druid Chronicles: HOUNDED HEXED HAMMERED TRICKED TRAPPED HUNTED SHATTERED STAKED SCOURGED BESIEGED

Cornell University Press Lucifer A1001541011
"An attractively written survey of the way the devil appears in art, literature and treatise, during the medieval period, with many signs of an engaging sense of personal commitment to the subject, and an attempt to show its contemporary relevance." -John O. Ward - Journal of Religious History This major contribution to the history of the Middle Ages and to the history of religion will enlighten scholars and students alike and will appeal to anyone concerned with the problem of evil in our world. Evil is an intrinsically fascinating topic. In Lucifer , Jeffrey Burton Russell continues his compelling study of the personification of evil in the figure of the Devil. The previous two volumes in this remarkable tertalogy-The Devil and Satan-trace the history of the concept of the devil comparatively as it emerged in diverse cultures and followed its development in Western thought from the ancient Hebrew religion through the first five centuries of the Christian era. The present volume charts the evolution of the concept of the devil from the fifth century through the fifteenth. Drawing on an impressive array of sources from popular religion, art, literature, and drama, as well as from scholastic philosophy, mystical theology, homiletics, and hagiography, Russell provides a detailed treatment of Christian diabology in the Middle Ages. Although he focuses primarily on Western Christian thought, Russell also includes, for the sake of comparison, material on the concept of the devil in Greek Orthodoxy during the Byzantine period as well as in Muslim thought. Russell recounts how the Middle Ages saw a refinement in detail rather than a radical alteration of diabological theory. He shows that the medieval concept of the devil, fundamentally unchanged over the course of the centuries, eventually gave rise to the unyielding beliefs that resulted in the horrifying cruelties of the witch-hunting craze in the 1500s and 1600s.

Frölich und Kaufmann Jack Kirby, Stan Lee. Marvel Comics Library. X-Men. 1963-1966. 1671863
(Text engl.)

HarperCollins US Tony Stark, Odysseus, and the Myths Behind Marvel A1075423619
NATIONAL BESTSELLER "By connecting our modern heroes to the archetypes of ancient myth, Peter Meineck's marvelous book bestows thrilling contemporary resonance upon those bygone legends." -Christopher Markus, coscreenwriter of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame What connects Dionysus, the ancient Greek god of transformation, and Spider-Man, a modern-day superhero? Since its inception, Marvel has created-in comics and on the silver screen-a vast, intricate universe brimming with superheroes and superhumans. Yet Marvel exists in a much larger mythological tradition, one that dates back to the ancient Greeks and their tales of gods and heroes. Professor of Classics Peter Meineck embarks on a captivating pilgrimage through ancient Greek mythology through the lens of some of Marvel's most iconic characters, including Captain America, Wolverine, and Black Widow, and traces their lineage to the dawn of human culture. Some connections are astounding and eye-opening, like Black Panther's ties to the legend of Atlantis and Daredevil's relationship to the mighty Herakles, while others are uncanny in their resemblance. What, for example, do Scarlet Witch and the sorceress Medea have in common? As grieving mothers cast out from society, quite a lot, actually. As Meineck reintroduces ancient figures like Achilles and Odysseus, he demonstrates how themes that appeared in the likes of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey continue to emerge in our stories today. He explores why these tales endure and how they have shifted to reflect society's changing values. Through his endeavor, one important question arises: What do our modern myths say about us? A fascinating and entertaining read, Tony Stark, Odysseus, and the Myths Behind Marvel is a rollicking journey from the legends of old to the pop-culture stories of today.

When a teen has an unexpected vision about a future murder, he must juggle newfound interest from the supernatural community with trying to prevent the murder from happening in this “riveting” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) New York Times bestselling romantic fantasy from F.T. Lukens. Fifteen-year-old Cam Reynolds wants to spend his sophomore year flying under the radar. That shouldn’t be too hard, considering he’s a human going to school with kids who have paranormal powers, like his best friend and witch, Al, and his longtime werewolf crush, Mateo. Then Cam has a psychic glimpse of the future in front of most of the student body, seeing a gruesomely murdered teen girl from the point of view of the killer. When Cam comes to, he knows two things: someone he goes to school with is a future murderer, and his life is about to change. No longer a mere human but a clairvoyant, one of the rarest of supernatural beings, Cam finds himself at the center of attention for the first time. As the most powerful supernatural factions in the city court Cam and his gift, he’ll have to work with his friends, both old and new, to figure out who he can trust and who might be a werewolf in sheep’s clothing. Because the clock is ticking, and Cam and his friends must identify the girl in the vision, find her potential killer, and prevent the murder from happening. Or the next murder Cam sees might be his own.

BÄNG Management & Verlag William Shakespeare: Macbeth (Deutsch / Englisch) A1080848775
Macbeth – Bilingual Audiobook Edition German & English Unabridged Play with Stage Directions William Shakespeare's Macbeth is one of the greatest tragedies in world literature. This unique bilingual audiobook presents the complete play in both languages: each act is performed first in German translation and then in the original English, allowing listeners to experience and compare Shakespeare's masterpiece in two linguistic worlds. All stage directions are included, and every character is clearly announced before speaking, preserving the dramatic structure of the original play and creating an authentic theatrical listening experience. At the heart of the story is Macbeth, a Scottish general whose ambition is awakened by the prophecy of three witches. Encouraged by Lady Macbeth, he embarks on a path of murder, power, guilt, and inevitable downfall. Rich in poetic language and psychological depth, Macbeth remains one of Shakespeare's most compelling dramas. Born in 1564, William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest playwright in the English language. His plays continue to captivate audiences across the world, and Macbeth stands among his most powerful explorations of ambition, conscience, and the destructive pursuit of power.

Bloomsbury eBooks UK Bringer of Dust A1072667435
1883. Agrigento, Sicily. A city of spires and now broken hopes and bodies... With the orsine destroyed, Cairndale lies in ruins, and Marlowe has vanished. His only chance of rescue lies in a fabled second orsine - long-hidden, thought lost - which might not even exist. But when a body is discovered in the shadow of Cairndale, Charlie and the Talents realize there is even more at stake than they'd feared. For a new drughr has arisen, ferocious, horned, seemingly able to move in their world at will - and it is not alone. A malevolent figure, known only as the Abbess, desires the dust for her own ends. And deep in the world of the dead, a terrible evil stirs - an evil which the corrupted dust just might hold the secret to reviving, or destroying forever. So the dark journey begun in Ordinary Monsters surges forward, from the sinister underworld of the London exiles, to the roar of the streetmarkets in nineteenth-century Alexandria, to the sunlit silences of the Dalmatian coast. Against bone witches, mud glyphics, and a house of twilight that exists in a netherworld all its own, the Talents must work together - if they are to have any hope of staving off the world of the dead, and saving their long-lost friend. A breathtaking sequel to Ordinary Monsters, delving even deeper into the rich worldbuilding and darkly sparkling tale of The Talents. Praise for Ordinary Monsters (Book One of The Talents Trilogy): 'Terrific... A book that creeps up on you, wearing brass knuckles' Conn Iggulden 'A dazzling mountain of wild invention, Dickensian eccentrics, supernatural horrors and gripping suspense. Be warned... once you step into this penny dreadful to end all penny dreadfuls, you'll never want to leave' Joe Hill 'Haunting, tense, earth-shattering' Tamora Pierce

HarperCollins Becoming Baba Yaga A1071202687
Silver Winner for Body Mind Spirit, Foreword INDIEs Explore the folklore of the trickster, villain, and rescuer known as Baba Yaga in a new light. “With Becoming Baba Yaga, Kris Spisak presents a robust work of scholarship. Baba Yaga is a wily shapeshifter, nearly impossible to pin down—but Spisak miraculously transforms alongside her, ever keeping up.” —from the foreword by GennaRose Nethercott, bestselling author of Thistlefoot When darkness, fear, and instability inundate our daily lives, folktale figures like Baba Yaga speak to the dichotomy of our existence—the hope and the horror, the magic and the mundane. At once an old hag and an enchantress, a demon and wish granter, a feminist and nothing more than a fairytale, Baba Yaga is an endlessly complex folktale character. Becoming Baba Yaga provides an in-depth look at the Baba Yaga mythos and history through Slavic folklore. Filled with historical and cultural context, analyses, and the stories themselves that add depth to the conversation. A comprehensive resource for anyone hoping to learn more about this ambiguous character and how her multifaceted presence still ripples through the present day, Becoming Baba Yaga is as thoughtful as it is illuminating. Spisak explores Baba Yaga’s connection to nature as an Earth goddess and as an herbalist. She also delves into the Shadow Self and Baba Yaga’s aspect as a trickster and places her in a modern context as not merely a witch of the woods but also as an archetype and force for finding your own path. Becoming Baba Yaga shares how she is both a force for good as much as evil and a feminist before her time.

HarperCollins Real Sorcery A1066244885
“If you’re interested in assuring that you obtain real tangible results with your spells and are willing to put the work into doing so, this is definitely the book for you. Completely filled with some amazing insights, ideas, and tips that come from experience. [Miller’s] ideas are some that I’ve never seen in other books. This book alone completely changed how I approach giving offerings to spirits and deities.” —Mat Auryn, author of Psychic Witch This book is about real magick, effecting real change, in a real world. There are some books on magick that teach it purely as spiritual advancement. There are others that teach it as a form of psychological self-help that affects only inner change. While magick can and should be both of these, it is something more. Real Sorcery is about success in practical magick; it is a book that aims at change in both the outer and inner worlds. Beyond a mere spell book or training course, Real Sorcery is a field manual on successful sorcery written by a professional sorcerer. The first part of the book lays out the qualities, concepts, and exercises necessary to attempt practical magick. The second part presents clear strategies for tackling almost any type of issue with sorcery. In this book you will learn how to: Attack problems from multiple angles, not just by casting a spell Blend mundane and magical action to ensure success Figure out whether what you are doing is working, and fix it if it isn’t Go beyond readings, into magical intelligence-gathering Influence the minds of other people Work most effectively on behalf of others This book was previously published as The Sorcerer’s Secrets by New Page Books in 2009. This edition features a new introduction from the author, one new chapter, and updates throughout.
