KNV Besorgung The Ghost Map A1002594534
From the bestselling author of Everything Bad is Good For You, Steven Johnson's The Ghost Map vividly recreates Victorian London to show how huge populations live together, how cities can kill - and how they can save us. Steven Johnson is one of today's most exciting writers about popular culture, urban living and new technology. In The Ghost Map he tells the story of the terrifying cholera epidemic that engulfed London in 1854, and the two unlikely heroes - anesthetist Doctor John Snow and affable clergyman Reverend Henry Whitehead - who defeated the disease through a combination of local knowledge, scientific research and map-making. In telling their extraordinary story, Steven Johnson also explores a whole world of ideas and connections, from urban terror to microbes, ecosystems to the Great Stink, cultural phenomena to street life. 'A wonderful book' Mail on Sunday 'A thumping page-turner' Daily Telegraph 'Enthralling ... vivid and gripping' New Statesman 'Exhilarating' Spectator 'It is a rattling scientific mystery, but in the hands of Steven Johnson it becomes something much richer ... a vast, interconnected picture about urban and bacterial life ... it is difficult to do justice to the exuberance of Johnson's ideas' Scotland on Sunday Steven Johnson is the author of the acclaimed books Everything Bad is Good for You, Mind Wide Open, Where Good Ideas Come From, Emergence and Interface Culture. His writing appeared in the Guardian, the New Yorker, Nation and Harper's, as well as the op-ed pages of The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. He is a Distinguished Writer In Residence at NYU's School Of Journalism, and a Contributing Editor to Wired.

Charles River Editors Napoleon Bonaparte's Most Decisive Land Battles A1075322744
Nearly 50 years after Napoleon met his Waterloo, generals across the West continued to study his tactics and engage their armies the same way armies fought during the Napoleonic Era. Despite advances in military technology and the advent of railroads for transportation, all of which made defensive warfare more effective, acclaimed military geniuses like Robert E. Lee used flank attacks and infantry charges against superior numbers in an effort to win decisive victories, and it would not be until World War I that concepts of modern warfare made the Napoleonic Era of the early 19th century outdated. For those questioning why generals continued using tactics from the Napoleonic Era even as technology changed the battlefield, the Battle of Austerlitz may provide the best answer. Napoleon is regarded as one of history's greatest generals, and Austerlitz was his greatest victory. In 1805, Britain, Austria, and Russia allied together to form the Third Coalition against the French, and the Third Coalition's forces consisted of armies from Austria and Russia, with Britain providing naval support as well as its financial powers. Napoleon had already defeated and mostly destroyed an Austrian army in October at Ulm before it could link up with the Russians, setting the stage for the Battle of Austerlitz to be the culmination of the war against the Third Coalition as a whole in early December. Despite the smashing victory at Ulm, Napoleon's French army would still be well outnumbered at Austerlitz by a joint Russo-Austrian army in a battle that would also come to be known as the Battle of Three Emperors. The Battle of Austerlitz was a tactical masterpiece that saw Napoleon actually invite an attack on his army by the bigger Coalition army, and over the course of about 9 hours, the French successfully defended their right flank while counterattacking in the center and splitting the Russo-Austrian army in two, allowing the French to hit the flank of the advancing left wing of the enemy. The result was a decisive victory that virtually annihilated the Third Coalition's army and made Napoleon the master of the European continent. The influence Austerlitz had on Europe's political and military situation cannot be overstated. The Third Coalition's defeat led to the dissolution of the Habsburg Empire, allowed France to redraw the map of Central Europe, and ultimately put into place the chain of events that would lead to France's subsequent wars. Furthermore, Austerlitz set the model that every general hoped to emulate in battle, and the results were undoubtedly on Napoleon's mind when he tried to use the same movement strategies in an attempt to keep Prussian and British armies from linking together at the Battle of Waterloo nearly 10 years after Austerlitz.

Createspace Independent Publishing Platform The New Map of Whisky A1080516213
The world of whisky has never been larger. Most books haven't caught up. For generations, whisky meant four countries: Scotland, Ireland, America, and Canada. That map is no longer accurate. Distilleries in Taiwan, India, Israel, Finland, Brazil, and more than a dozen other nations are producing single malts that compete with, and sometimes outperform, the established greats. The New Map of Whisky: Place, Process, and the Modern Spirit is the first book to chart this expanded landscape with the depth and technical honesty it deserves. This is not a tasting guide or a collector's handbook. It is an explanation of why whisky tastes the way it does depending on where it is made and what happens when the rules written for one climate are applied in another. Every chapter follows the same thread: the grain, the still, the cask, and the climate and how each interacts differently depending on whether a distillery sits in the Scottish Highlands, the subtropical coast of Taiwan, the high-altitude plateaus of Mexico, or the shores of the Dead Sea. What you will find inside: A grain-to-glass vocabulary primer that explains malting, fermentation, distillation, and maturation in plain language, without a chemistry background required. A dedicated chapter on how whisky builds flavor, covering still geometry, cut points, cask construction, peat, and the role of climate in shaping every stage of production. A thorough account of the old map, the legislative and cultural foundations that made Scotland, Ireland, Canada, and the United States the defining forces of the category. And then, chapter by chapter, the new one. Japan's philosophy of precision and internal diversity. India's tropical heat and the single malts it produces in a fraction of the time Scotland requires. Taiwan's seismically engineered warehouses and the STR cask protocol that made world-class whisky possible in a subtropical climate. Australia's wet-fill wine cask revolution and the legal battle that made craft distilling legal again after nearly a century. New Zealand's alpine patience. South Africa's native maize and its 140 years of quiet refinement. Denmark's floor-malted rye and direct-fired copper. Sweden's freezing river water. Iceland's sheep dung smoke. Finland's 100 percent whole grain rye. Israel's Dead Sea maturation trials, where an angel's share of 25 percent annually produces some of the most concentrated whisky on earth. Mexico's nixtamalized heirloom corn. Brazil's native Amburana wood. South Korea's seasonal thermal extremes. China's corporate pivot toward mountain-altitude single malt. Each chapter explains the production decisions specific to that country, the climate data that shapes maturation, and why the resulting whisky could not have been made anywhere else. The New Map of Whisky is written for readers who already love whisky and want to understand it more deeply and for anyone who has ever picked up a bottle from an unfamiliar country and wondered whether it was worth trusting. The answer, increasingly, is yes. This book explains why. Jay Puckett, CSS, CSP holds certifications from the Society of Wine Educators and the Council of Whisky Masters. His previous book, Proof and Purpose, introduced readers to the fundamentals of spirits appreciation. The New Map of Whisky is its logical sequel, built for the reader who is ready to go further.

University Of Oklahoma Press The Map Turtle and Sawback Atlas A1038267095
Covering all facets of the biology of a little-known genus, Peter V. Lindeman's lavishly illustrated Map Turtle and Sawback Atlas is both a scientific treatise and an engaging introduction to a striking group of turtles. Map turtles and sawbacks, found in and along rivers from Texas to Florida and north to the Great Lakes, fascinate ecologists and evolutionary biologists. Over a short geologic time span, these turtles achieved exceptional biological diversification. Their diets are also exceptionally diverse, and a significant difference in size distinguishes males from females. Adult males are typically half or less the shell length of adult females, making map turtles and sawbacks the champions of sexual dimorphism among not only turtles but all four-legged vertebrates. Aesthetics also draw biologists and hobbyists to map turtles and sawbacks. While the male Sabine map turtle may look to some like a "pencil-necked geek," as the author puts it, markings on the shell, limbs, head, and neck make map turtles among the most attractive turtles on earth. Sawbacks feature a striking ridge down their shell. Few turtles show themselves off to such advantage. Photographs included here of Graptemys basking poses reveal to what improbable heights these turtles can scale, the spread-eagle sunning stances they adopt, the stacking of individuals on a crowded site, and the heads that warily watch the world above the waterline. In lively prose, Lindeman details the habitat, diet, reproduction and life history, natural history, and population abundance of each species. A section on conservation status summarizes official state, federal, and international designations for each species, along with efforts toward population management and recovery as well as habitat preservation. The author also outlines promising avenues for future research, ranging from the effects of global climate change on populations to strategies for combating expansion of the pet trade.

GRIN The Strategy Map for General Electric Medical Systems, 2002 A1007697599
Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Berlin (Master of Business Administration), course: Strategic Management, language: English, abstract: If you take the words of a former General Electrics (GE) employee to define strategy, William E. Rothschild said, ¿What do you want to achieve or avoid? The answers to this question are objectives. How will you go about achieving your desired results? The answer to this you can call strategy.¿ This statement not only highlights the need for strategy but also the need to bring strategy to fruition. Companies should not only devise strategy but also successfully clarify and execute their strategies. This means that a company has to be able to measure its strategic success. Unfortunately, company strategy is not always transparent or understood in the same way by a company¿s key players. Sun Tzu, a Chinese military strategist who wrote the military treatise The Art of War, praised this aspect for strategies in war as follows: ¿All men can see these tactics whereby I conquer, but what none can see is the strategy out of which victory is evolved¿. The Strategy Map created by Kaplan and Norton is to facilitate corporate strategy development and execution providing a missing link between strategy formulation and strategy implementation by identifying the key internal processes that drive strategic success and by aligning investment in people, technology and organizational capital for the greatest impact. The first part of the assignment describes in detail the theoretical framework of Strategy Maps. The second part uses the theory to describe and visualize the Strategy Map of General Electric Medical Systems (GEMS) ¿ the world¿s leading manufacturer of diagnostic imaging equipment. This practical approach is based on the publication of Tarun Khanna about GEMS in the Harvard Business School Press in February 2003. In conclusion, there is a brief up-to-date situation on GEMS after 2002 and some statements to the authors¿ experience in creating the GEMS Strategy Map.

Granta Publications How the World Thinks A1052564834
*SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER*'There to fill the Sapiens-size hole in your life' ObserverIn this groundbreaking global overview of philosophy, Julian Baggini travels the world to provide a wide-ranging map of human thought. One of the great unexplained wonders of human history is that written philosophy flowered entirely separately in China, India and Ancient Greece at more or less the same time. These early philosophies have had a profound impact on the development of distinctive cultures in different parts of the world. What we call 'philosophy' in the West is not even half the story. Julian Baggini sets out to expand our horizons in How the World Thinks, exploring the philosophies of Japan, India, China and the Muslim world, as well as the lesser-known oral traditions of Africa and Australia's first peoples. Interviewing thinkers from around the globe, Baggini asks questions such as: why is the West is more individualistic than the East? What makes secularism a less powerful force in the Islamic world than in Europe? And how has China resisted pressures for greater political freedom? Offering deep insights into how different regions operate, and paying as much attention to commonalities as to differences, Baggini shows that by gaining greater knowledge of how others think we take the first step to a greater understanding of ourselves.
