Comme il l'a dit à Alexandre Dumas, Nerval était doué de la faculté de s'identifier à des personnages réels ou légendaires. Et les souvenirs qu'il nous raconte, nous ne saurons jamais s'ils ont été vécus ou inventés ; mystère profitable à la poésie. Ces Petits Châteaux de Bohême, pourtant, que Nerval habita, furent bien réels : il y passa le temps d'une jeunesse éprise de fantaisie et d'espoirs incertains.
