Harvest Books Paperbacks I Have the Right to Destroy Myself A1003704110
In the fast-paced, high-urban landscape of Seoul, C and K are brothers who have fallen in love with the same woman—Se-yeon—who tears at both of them as they all try desperately to find real connection in an atomized world. A spectral, nameless narrator haunts the edges of their lives as he tells of his work helping the lost and hurting find escape through suicide. Dreamlike and beautiful, the South Korea brought forth in this novel is cinematic in its urgency and its reflection of contemporary life everywhere—far beyond the boundaries of the Korean peninsula. Recalling the emotional tension of Milan Kundera and the existential anguish of Bret Easton Ellis, I Have the Right to Destroy Myself achieves its author’s greatest wish—to show Korean literature as part of an international tradition. Young-ha Kim is a young master, the leading literary voice of his generation.

Sahla Books Summary of the Book Twenty -Three Something they do not tell you about capitalism A1069673096
The book "Twenty -three Something they do not tell you about capitalism" is more like what is a vital legion to understand and manage our lives, and solve many of the puzzles surrounding it. And because we all live in the nose of the capitalist system, according to its conditions, and its areas that he draws, the reading of this book, and the sailing in its chapters is not intellectual luxury. The book, which was written by the South Korean economist Ha-JOON Chang, appeared to the light at the time; In the aftermath of the global economic crisis in the year (two thousand and eight), which the writer considered the second largest economic crisis in the history of mankind after the great thirties in the last century. It was not surprising that his book topped the best -selling lists, and his writer knocked on iron while he was hot, as there is no voice between humans that prevail over the sound of the global economic crisis that shook the world at the time.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION An essential work in Latin American literature. Horacio Castellanos Moya is one of the most thought provoking, original, and relevant voices of the Bolaño generation. José Zeledón, a quiet and shy man, lives tormented by his violent past. After fleeing from El Salvador with a new identity after its civil war, he has managed to go unnoticed for years in the United States. Now he must leave Texas behind and start a new life in Wisconsin. His peaceful new life will be altered when he discovers that another Salvadorian, journalist Erasmo Aragon, is a professor at Merlow College while he works on finding the truth about the revolutionary poet Roque Dalton's death. Castellanos Moya is one of the most incisive and singular authors of his generation and the only one who, according to Roberto Bolaño, has been able to narrate "the horror, the secret Vietnam that was Latin America for a long time". Zeledón and Aragón are both survivors of the horror; both tell their first-person stories about their past, the guerrilla, and the narcos, while the author weaves an intricate cobweb of violence that soon reach a point where all roads cross.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION "When it comes to YA suspense, Karen M. PRH Grupo Editorial Los Recuerdos del Porvenir / Recollections of Things to Come A1055935124
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The emblematic work of one of Mexico's canonical writers, accompanied by a critical analysis. Ixtepec is a small village that has survived the battering of the violent presence of revolutionary troops pitted against each other in a ceaseless, fratricidal fight. Its residents, disillusioned because the "revolution" brought them neither justice nor progress, lead dull, nostalgic lives that are fractured again in the face of a new armed conflict, the Cristero War, which promises further misfortune. The authorities have charged Francisco Rosas with maintaining order and carrying out the wishes of the central government, especially those relating to ending religious worship. The lives of General Rosas, his closest collaborators, and his lovers, along with the lives of the prostitutes, clergy, street dogs, madmen, and most well-known members of Ixtepec's powerful families become intertwined and led to a tragic destiny, where there is no room for dreams or love. This work, considered by many to be in the vein of magic realism, supports the strength of its storytelling with poetic devices which merely enhance the plot. Told through various voices, this novel shows us a complex web of narrative planes that are interwoven through the stony, somber voices of Ixtepec's residents, exposing their darkest, most intimate desires.

GRIN The Tragedy of Jimmy Porter A1008168350
GRIN The Tragedy of Jimmy Porter A1008168350
Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: It is widely accepted that John Osborne's play Look Back in Anger was a turning-point in the history of British theatre, a milestone introducing the era of the New British Drama. Osborne remembers: "On 8 May 1956 [...] Look Back in Anger had its opening at the Royal Court Theatre. This [...] particular date seems to have become fixed in the memories of theatrical historians" and Lacey emphasises: "The moment of John Osborne's Look Back in Anger [...] was undoubtedly a symbolic one in the history of post-war British theatre and of post-war culture generally." However, Look Back in Anger was not perceived as a break-through right from the beginning. Rather, Osborne had to cope with shattering criticism and at first, his play was a crushing defeat. Osborne himself summarized the reactions towards Look Back in Anger in his autobiography about thirty years later: "There was a vehement, undisputed judgement: the play was a palpable miss." Nearly all reviews focused on the play's hero Jimmy Porter, whose nature they depicted as the reason for the "essential wrongness" of the play. Jimmy was seen as "a bitter young misfit," "a boor, self-pitying, self-dramatising rebel" and a "cynical, neurotic [young man] of working-class stock," whose "continuous tirade against life [...] ha[d] a deadening effect upon the whole play." Cecil Wilson sharpened the criticism when she exclaimed that Jimmy Porter's bitterness and his savage and often vulgar talk "crie[d] out for a knife." However, the attitudes towards Osborne and his first play changed with the publication of Kenneth Tynan's testimony in the Sunday newspaper a week later stating that he could hardly "love anyone who did not wish to see Look Back in Anger. It is the best young play of its decade." This provocative review suddenly shed a new light on the play. Overnight, Look Back in Anger had become a success, its (anti-)hero Jimmy Porter "the first young voice to cry out for a new generation that had forgotten the war, mistrusted the welfare state and mocked its established rulers with boredom, anger and disgust" and John Osborne had become a celebrated young writer. Owing to its literary key role in the history of British Drama I would like to give a brief overview of the critical opinions about Look Back in Anger before I move on to developing my own thesis.

Random House N.Y. Las Cosas Que Perdimos En El Fuego / Things We Lost in the Fire A1040868151
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION In these wildly imaginative, devilishly daring tales of the macabre, internationally bestselling author Mariana Enriquez brings contemporary Argentina to vibrant life as a place where shocking inequality, violence, and corruption are the law of the land, while military dictatorship and legions of desaparecidos loom large in the collective memory. In these stories, reminiscent of Shirley Jackson and Julio Cortázar, three young friends distract themselves with drugs and pain in the midst a government-enforced blackout; a girl with nothing to lose steps into an abandoned house and never comes back out; to protest a viral form of domestic violence, a group of women set themselves on fire. But alongside the black magic and disturbing disappearances, these stories are fueled by compassion for the frightened and the lost, ultimately bringing these characters--mothers and daughters, husbands and wives--into a surprisingly familiar reality. Written in hypnotic prose that gives grace to the grotesque, Things We Lost in the Fire is a powerful exploration of what happens when our darkest desires are left to roam unchecked, and signals the arrival of an astonishing and necessary voice in contemporary fiction.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION From a beguiling voice in Mexican fiction comes an astonishing novel—her first to be translated into English—about a mysterious child with the power to change a family’s history in a country on the verge of revolution. From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him as if he were their own. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can—visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous. Followed by his protective swarm of bees and living to deliver his adoptive family from threats—both human and those of nature—Simonopio’s purpose in Linares will, in time, be divined. Set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution and the devastating influenza of 1918, The Murmur of Bees captures both the fate of a country in flux and the destiny of one family that has put their love, faith, and future in the unbelievable.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The New Life just as Zurita intended it: this is a truly remarkable event in contemporary poetry. This is the story of a project for which Raúl Zurita has devoted half of his life. In 1983, after having changed Chilean poetry forever with Purgatory and Anteparadise, Zurita began to write The New Life, a book that would close an unprecedented poetic trilogy. Despite working on it for more than a decade, he could only see a reduced version of it published in 1994, after which the manuscripts were lost. When Zurita was fortunate to recover them thanks to a collector, he was able to see to fruition his initial project in all its magnitude. Today, more than twenty-five years later, the final edition of The New Life is finally revealed. It is a book -a universe- where the mysterious neighbors, rivers that speak and feel and love, the photographs of a desolate country, those that disappeared, the cities, the dreams, the loves, "sister moon", "sister night", and "sister death" are intertwined in an emotional song that gives greatness back to poetry, and confirms Zurita as one of the greatest voices of contemporary poetry.
