Canongate Books Ltd. Madly, Deeply: The Alan Rickman Diaries A1063106304
A SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER A WATERSTONES BEST BOOK OF 2022: ENTERTAINMENT A MAIL ON SUNDAYS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2022 Alan Rickman remains one of the most beloved actors of all time across almost every genre, from his breakout role as Die Hard's villainous Hans Gruber to his heart-wrenching run as Professor Severus Snape, and beyond. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate new audiences today. But Rickman's artistry wasn't confined to just his performances. Rickman's writing details the extraordinary and the ordinary in a way that is anecdotal, indiscreet, witty, gossipy and utterly candid. He takes us behind the scenes on films and plays ranging from Sense & Sensibility, the Harry Potter series, Private Lives, My Name Is Rachel Corrie and many more. The diaries run from 1993 to his death in 2016 and offer insight into both a public and private life. Here is Rickman the consummate professional actor, but also the friend, the traveller, the fan, the director, the enthusiast: in short, the real Alan Rickman. Here is a life fully lived, all detailed in intimate and characteristically plain-spoken prose. Reading the diaries is like listening to Rickman chatting to a close friend. Madly, Deeply also includes a foreword by Emma Thompson and a selection of Rickman's early diaries, dating from 1974 to 1982, when his acting life first began.

Penguin Books UK The Blacker the Berry . . . A1045189553
The groundbreaking Harlem Renaissance novel about prejudice within the black community Emma Lou Morgan s skin is black. So black that it s a source of shame to her not only among the largely white community of her hometown of Boise, Idaho, but also among her lighter-skinned family and friends. Seeking a community where she will be accepted, she leaves home at age eighteen, traveling first to Los Angeles and then to New York City, where in the Harlem of the 1920s she finds a vibrant scene of nightclubs and dance halls and parties and love affairs . . . and, still, rejection by her own race. One of the most widely read and controversial works of the Harlem Renaissance, and the first novel to openly address prejudice among black Americans and the issue of colorism, The Blacker the Berry . . . is a book of undiminished power about the invidious role of skin color in American society. Independently Publishing The Dance of Death A1078748884
Born on December 12, 1821, in Rouen, France, Gustave Flaubert is considered one of the greatest novelists of the nineteenth century and a central figure of literary realism. The son of a respected surgeon, he grew up in a cultivated bourgeois environment that later nourished his sharp and often critical portrayal of provincial life. Flaubert began studying law in Paris but abandoned his studies after suffering from epileptic seizures. He then devoted himself entirely to literature, pursuing an ideal of stylistic perfection. He believed in the absolute precision of language and famously searched for le mot juste—the exact word—sometimes spending days refining a single sentence. His masterpiece, Madame Bovary (1857), tells the tragic story of Emma Bovary, a woman whose romantic dreams clash with the dullness of provincial reality. The novel caused a scandal and led to a public trial for immorality, from which Flaubert was eventually acquitted. Today, it is regarded as a cornerstone of modern fiction for its psychological depth and objective narrative style. Among his other major works are Sentimental Education (1869) and Salammbô (1862), which reveal both his realism and his fascination with historical settings. A close mentor to younger writers such as Guy de Maupassant, Flaubert profoundly influenced generations of authors. He died on May 8, 1880, in Croisset. His rigorous approach to writing and his pursuit of artistic excellence left a lasting mark on world literature.

Transworld The Sparrow A1032350980
'The Sparrow is one of my favourite science fiction novels and it destroyed me in the best way when I read it. It is so beautifully written and the construction of the narrative is masterful' Emma Newman, author of Planetfall THE ACCLAIMED GENRE-DEFINING WINNER OF THE 1998 ARTHUR C. CLARKE AWARD Set in the 21st century - a number of decades from now - The Sparrow is the story of a charismatic Jesuit priest and talented linguist, Emilio Sandoz, who - in response to a remarkable radio signal from the depths of space - leads a scientific mission to make first contact with an extra-terrestrial culture. In the true tradition of Jesuit adventurers before him, Sandoz and his companions are prepared to endure isolation, suffering - even death - but nothing can prepare them for the civilisation they encounter. Or for the tragic misunderstanding that brings the mission to a devastating end. Once considered a living saint, Sandoz returns alone to Earth horrifically maimed, both physically and spiritually, the mission's sole survivor - only to be blamed for the mission's failure and accused of heinous crimes. Written in clean, effortless prose and peopled with memorable characters who never lose their humanity or humour, The Sparrow is a powerful, haunting fiction - a tragic but ultimately triumphant novel about the nature of faith, of love and what it means to be 'human' and widely considered to be a classic of the genre.

Simon & Schuster Fruit of the Dead A1069060011
Simon & Schuster Fruit of the Dead A1069060011
An electric contemporary reimagining of the myth of Persephone and Demeter set over the course of one summer on a lush private island, exploring who holds the power in a modern underworld. Camp counsellor Cory Ansel, eighteen and aimless, afraid to face her high-strung single mother in New York, is no longer sure where home is when the father of one of her campers offers an alternative. The CEO of a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company, Rolo Picazo is middle-aged, divorced, magnetic. He is also intoxicated by Cory. When Rolo proffers a childcare job (and an NDA), Cory quiets an internal warning and allows herself to be ferried to his private island off the coast of Maine. Plied with luxury and opiates manufactured by his company, she continues to tell herself she's in charge. Her mother, Emer, head of a teetering agricultural NGO, senses otherwise. When her daughter seemingly disappears, Emer crosses land and sea to heed a cry for help she alone is convinced she hears. Alternating between the two women's perspectives, Fruit of the Dead incorporates its mythic inspiration with a light touch and devastating precision. The result is a lush and haunting story that explores love, attraction, control, obliteration and America's own late capitalist mythos. Advance praise for Fruit of the Dead 'A gripping literary thriller, Fruit of the Dead presents a coming-of-age tale that is so well-observed and intoxicating that the reader will lose track of time, but won't forget how they spent it. Egan and Cline fans: assemble.' Caoilinn Hughes, author of The Wild Laughter 'Ancient Greece meets Succession by way of Emma Cline, Fruit of the Dead is a deliciously dark examination of agency and power, and the savage complexity of the mother-daughter bond.' Ruth Gilligan, author of The Butchers 'Mesmerised and profoundly alarmed, I read this in one go; I've been haunted by it ever since. I've passionately loved Lyon's writing for years, and Fruit of the Dead further confirms what I've long suspected: I want to lunge to read anything she writes.' R. O. Kwon, author of The Incendiaries 'Irresistible and devastating. Lyon has spun an utterly absorbing, lush and terror-laced retelling of an ancient, archetypal tale - a young woman tempted and taken, a mother's feral grief - that is both timeless and crisply contemporary.' Melissa Febos, author of Girlhood

Little, Brown Book Group The Devil Gets His Due A1069356985
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas . . . right? The Devils series is a sexy blend of spice, romance and grumpy men. Prepare to laugh, swoon and cry . . . perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and Emma Chase. ___ Some people marry the enemy in Vegas . . . Keeley managed to get knocked up by him too. Keeley: Last January, I drunk-married my nemesis-hot, oversized geek Graham Tate. With no memory of how it came about, there was only one solution: run off before he woke up and pretend it didn't happen. It would have worked perfectly if I hadn't wound up pregnant. Graham is the opposite of everything I want in a man-practical, disciplined, frugal-but living with him until the baby arrives has me wondering if, perhaps, I've been wanting the wrong things all along. And if that drunk version of me last January might have been onto something. Graham: I never planned to have kids, and I certainly wouldn't have planned on one with Keeley Connolly-a woman who does not believe in savings accounts or personal safety and thinks Lucky Charms is a health food because of the non-marshmallow bits. A woman who also didn't think twice about marrying me in Vegas and ditching me hours later. I can't wait to put this behind me and return to my careful, chaos-free life in New York. But the more time I spend with Keeley, the more I'm remembering the things that led me to marry her in the first place...and wondering if I can live without them when this ends. Readers can't get enough of The Devil Gets His Due 'Elizabeth O'Roark writes witty banter and tension better than anyone, and this was no exception.' 'You're telling me I stayed up past 6 am reading this like a love sick fool?? Yes I am and yes I did and no I have no regrets. Graham and Keeley were perfection.' 'Easily a top 2022 read!' 'The chemistry, the swoon, the characters, the plot and the setting, everything was just perfection!'

Hodder & Stoughton Sicily A1038701375
Hodder & Stoughton Sicily A1038701375
'Sicily is the key to everything' Johann Wolfgang von Goethe The author of the classic book on Venice turns his sights to Sicily in this beautiful book full of maps and colour photographs. 'I discovered Sicily almost by mistake . . .We drove as far as Naples, then put the car on the night ferry to Palermo. There was a degree of excitement in the early hours when we passed Stromboli, emitting a rich glow every half-minute or so like an ogre puffing on an immense cigar; and a few hours later, in the early morning sunshine, we sailed into the Conca d'Oro, the Golden Shell, in which the city lies. Apart from the beauty of the setting, I remember being instantly struck by a change in atmosphere. The Strait of Messina is only a couple of miles across and the island is politically part of Italy; yet somehow one feels that one has entered a different world . . . This book is, among other things, an attempt to analyse why this should be.' The stepping stone between Europe and Africa, the gateway between the East and the West, at once a stronghold, clearing-house and observation post, Sicily has been invaded and fought over by Phoenicians and Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans, Goths and Byzantines, Arabs and Normans, Germans, Spaniards and the French for thousands of years. It has belonged to them all - and yet has properly been part of none. John Julius Norwich was inspired to become a writer by his first visit in 1961 and this book is the result of a fascination that has lasted over half a century. In tracing its dark story, he attempts to explain the enigma that lies at the heart of the Mediterranean's largest island. This vivid short history covers everything from erupting volcanoes to the assassination of Byzantine emperors, from Nelson's affair with Emma Hamilton to Garibaldi and the rise of the Mafia. Taking in the key buildings and towns, and packed with fascinating stories and unforgettable characters, Sicily is the book he was born to write.
