Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the most wicked of them all? Snow White's dark queen tells her side of the story in this queer, witchy reimagining of the classic fairy tale from the author of Malice. Legends tell of a witch who became a queen - the heartless villain in the story of Snow White. But now the wicked queen is stepping out of Snow White's shadow to become the heroine of her own legend. Her "once upon a time" began when she was just Ayleth, a young witch living in the forest with her coven, practicing their magic in secret and hiding from the White King's brutal war against witchcraft. Ayleth, however, faces a war of her own. Her magical gifts have yet to reveal themselves, and as the threat of the Royal Huntsmen intensifies, she fears she will never become the witch her coven needs. To prove herself, she sets out on a perilous quest that sends her to the White Palace, a decadent world of drama and deceit. There, she encounters an unlikely figure from her past, Jacquetta - the witch who once held Ayleth's heart - but then betrayed her. As events at the palace escalate, Ayleth finds herself caught in the web of the White King, whose dark charisma is as dangerous as the sinister force that seems to be haunting the palace. With the threat of discovery looming, Ayleth and Jacquetta must set aside the wounds of their past and work together to survive. But to do this, Ayleth must find the strength to transform into someone she never imagined she could be. A powerful witch, the very wickedest of them all.

Ingram Publisher Services Flags on the Bayou A1069517450
EDGAR AWARD WINNER FOR BEST NOVEL OF THE YEAR From New York Times-bestselling author James Lee Burke comes a novel set in Civil War-era Louisiana as the South transforms and a brilliant cast of characters – enslaved and free women, plantation gentry, and battle-weary Confederate and Union soldiers – are caught in the maelstrom In the fall of 1863, the Union army is in control of the Mississippi river. Much of Louisiana, including New Orleans and Baton Rouge, is occupied. The Confederate army is retreating toward Texas, and being replaced by Red Legs, irregulars commanded by a maniacal figure, and enslaved men and women are beginning to glimpse freedom. When Hannah Laveau, an enslaved woman working on the Lufkin plantation, is accused of murder, she goes on the run with Florence Milton, an abolitionist schoolteacher, dodging the local constable and the slavecatchers that prowl the bayous. Wade Lufkin, haunted by what he observed—and did—as a surgeon on the battlefield, has returned to his uncle’s plantation to convalesce, where he becomes enraptured by Hannah. Flags on the Bayou is an engaging, action-packed narrative that includes a duel that ends in disaster, a brutal encounter with the local Union commander, repeated skirmishes with Confederate irregulars led by a diseased and probably deranged colonel, and a powerful story of love blossoming between an unlikely pair. As the story unfolds, it illuminates a past that reflects our present in sharp relief. James Lee Burke, whose “evocative prose remains a thing of reliably fierce wonder” (Entertainment Weekly), expertly renders the rich Louisiana landscape, from the sunsets on the Mississippi River to the dingy saloons of New Orleans to the tree-lined shores of the bayou and the cottonmouth snakes that dwell in its depths. Powerful and deeply moving, Flags on the Bayou is a story of tragic acts of war, class divisions upended, and love enduring through it all.

Castle Point Books United States of Oligarchy A1076605658
A staggering examination of how America's wealthiest infiltrated the government and allied with dictators, transforming the U.S. from democracy to oligarchy. For years, a small group of billionaires has amassed increasing power, steering American politics for their own benefit. Many of these figures are familiar. There's Elon Musk, who has used his wealth to help place Donald Trump back in the White House. There's Mark Zuckerberg, who has used his resources to transform America into his own digital playground. There's Jared Kushner, who has used family connections to gain more political power than he ever dreamed of. There is only one word to describe such extreme levels of wealth, avarice, and political control: Oligarchy. But the oligarchs are not working alone. From China to Russia to Saudi Arabia and beyond, many of these men have cultivated alliances with America's most notorious adversaries, opening the doors for autocrats around the world to sink their teeth into the U.S. Placing profit over patriotism, they have transformed into vectors of influence for some of the world's most repulsive dictatorships, all of whom are trying to create a world dominated by imperialism and tyranny. Connecting everything from the devastation in Ukraine to destruction in Gaza to destabilization in Greenland, these oligarchs have transformed American policy and American politics into their own private fiefdoms, regardless of what Americans actually want. In United States of Oligarchy, Casey Michel illuminates a story decades in the making, from the earliest efforts to corral and combat American oligarchs, to the new crop of individuals monopolizing American democracy and making the world safe for dictatorship - all for their own benefit. The oligarchs have risen, and are attempting to reign. The only question remaining is whether or not it's too late to stop them.

GRIN Why and How to Use Conflict Management in Organisations A1007741539
Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Berlin, course: Soft Skills & Leadership Qualities, language: English, abstract: The American William Ellery Channing once said that ¿difficulties are meant to rouse, not discourage. The human spirit is to grow strong by conflict.¿ Life is full of conflicts. Wherever choices exist there is potential for disagreement. Such differences, when handled properly, can result in richer, more effective, creative solutions and interaction. But it is difficult to consistently turn differences into opportunities. Poorly managed disagreements could lead to a psychological distance between people based on negative feelings like competition and disregard. Conflict is inevitable in business relationships, as it is in social relationships. Without conflict, growth is limited. Unresolved conflict can be poisonous to the productivity of a company. Conflicts that are not handled or that are handled in an inappropriate way could become expensive for a company. Thus, managers spend a lot of time dealing with conflicts or its aftermath. This indicates how much resources are wasted by wrong conflict management; a huge amount of a company¿s workforce is kept away from daily business and productive work. The challenge is to identify conflict situations in their beginning stage and to manage them constructively to discover new opportunities and to transform conflict into a productive learning experience. Whereas chapter 1.2 describes some important conflict types and the reasons for their arising, chapter 2.1 describes the first signs of conflict arising to sensitise to the roots of conflicts. By focussing on the business environment, chapter 2.2 and 2.3 show ways to minimise unnecessary conflicts and to manage unavoidable conflicts. Chapter 2.4 states important soft skills managers must develop to resolve conflicts successfully. This paper ends with interesting facts and figures about the importance of conflict management in organisations to underline the topicality of this issue.

Mowenstein Books LLC Die Verwandlung / The Metamorphosis [Bilingual Edition] - German & English A1077616974
The Metamorphosis: Bilingual Edition (German and English) Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis is a cornerstone of 20th-century literature. Originally written in German, this novella tells the surreal story of Gregor Samsa, a young man who mysteriously transforms into a gigantic insect. This seemingly absurd premise evolves into a profound exploration of alienation, identity, and human isolation. The text delves into themes of existential anxiety and the marginalization faced by individuals who do not conform to societal norms. Kafka's work is as relevant today as it was when first published in 1915, speaking to contemporary readers through its exploration of identity and the human condition. This bilingual edition, featuring the original German alongside an English translation, offers readers a valuable opportunity to engage directly with Kafka's iconic prose while enhancing their language skills. It is an ideal resource for language learners, literature enthusiasts, and those interested in deep comparative reading, allowing them to appreciate the nuances of Kafka's expression and the translator's interpretation. About the Author Franz Kafka (1883-1924) was a pivotal figure in world literature, renowned for his unique narrative style and complex exploration of the human psyche. Though Kafka published only a few works during his lifetime, his posthumously released novels and stories have left a lasting imprint on the landscape of modern fiction. His profound and often unsettling narratives continue to influence writers and thinkers worldwide. About Möwenstein Books Möwenstein Books is dedicated to producing high-quality bilingual editions of classic literature. Our mission is to foster cross-cultural appreciation and understanding by creating accessible formats for readers to explore literary works in their original and translated languages. Harper Collins (US) The Light of Days A1061703905
THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Also on the USA Today, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Globe and Mail, Publishers Weekly, and Indie bestseller lists. One of the most important stories of World War II, already optioned by Steven Spielberg for a major motion picture: a spectacular, searing history that brings to light the extraordinary accomplishments of brave Jewish women who became resistance fighters?a group of unknown heroes whose exploits have never been chronicled in full, until now. Witnesses to the brutal murder of their families and neighbors and the violent destruction of their communities, a cadre of Jewish women in Poland?some still in their teens?helped transform the Jewish youth groups into resistance cells to fight the Nazis. With courage, guile, and nerves of steel, these ?ghetto girls? paid off Gestapo guards, hid revolvers in loaves of bread and jars of marmalade, and helped build systems of underground bunkers. They flirted with German soldiers; bribed them with wine, whiskey, and home cooking; used their Aryan looks to seduce them; and shot and killed them. They bombed German train lines and blew up a town's water supply. They also nursed the sick, taught children, and hid families. Yet the exploits of these courageous resistance fighters have remained virtually unknown. As propulsive and thrilling as Hidden Figures, In the Garden of Beasts, and Band of Brothers, The Light of Days at last tells the true story of these incredible women whose courageous yet little-known feats have been eclipsed by time. Judy Batalion?the granddaughter of Polish Holocaust survivors?takes us back to 1939 and introduces us to Renia Kukielka, a weapons smuggler and messenger who risked death traveling across occupied Poland on foot and by train. Joining Renia are other women who served as couriers, armed fighters, intelligence agents, and saboteurs, all who put their lives in mortal danger to carry out their missions. Batalion follows these women through the savage destruction of the ghettos, arrest and internment in Gestapo prisons and concentration camps, and for a lucky few?like Renia, who orchestrated her own audacious escape from a brutal Nazi jail?into the late 20th century and beyond. Powerful and inspiring, featuring twenty black-and-white photographs, The Light of Days is an unforgettable true tale of war, the fight for freedom, exceptional bravery, female friendship, and survival in the face of staggering odds.

Penguin US Franklin D. Roosevelt A1049503537
Named a Best Book of the Year by The Washington Post and NPR “We come to see in FDR the magisterial, central figure in the greatest and richest political tapestry of our nation’s entire history” —Nigel Hamilton, Boston Globe “Meticulously researched and authoritative” —Douglas Brinkley, The Washington Post “A workmanlike addition to the literature on Roosevelt.” —David Nasaw, The New York Times “Dallek offers an FDR relevant to our sharply divided nation” —Michael Kazin “Will rank among the standard biographies of its subject” —Publishers Weekly A one-volume biography of Roosevelt by the #1 New York Times bestselling biographer of JFK, focusing on his career as an incomparable politician, uniter, and deal maker In an era of such great national divisiveness, there could be no more timely biography of one of our greatest presidents than one that focuses on his unparalleled political ability as a uniter and consensus maker. Robert Dallek’s Franklin D. Roosevelt: A Political Life takes a fresh look at the many compelling questions that have attracted all his biographers: how did a man who came from so privileged a background become the greatest presidential champion of the country’s needy? How did someone who never won recognition for his intellect foster revolutionary changes in the country’s economic and social institutions? How did Roosevelt work such a profound change in the country’s foreign relations? For FDR, politics was a far more interesting and fulfilling pursuit than the management of family fortunes or the indulgence of personal pleasure, and by the time he became president, he had commanded the love and affection of millions of people. While all Roosevelt’s biographers agree that the onset of polio at the age of thirty-nine endowed him with a much greater sense of humanity, Dallek sees the affliction as an insufficient explanation for his transformation into a masterful politician who would win an unprecedented four presidential terms, initiate landmark reforms that changed the American industrial system, and transform an isolationist country into an international superpower. Dallek attributes FDR’s success to two remarkable political insights. First, unlike any other president, he understood that effectiveness in the American political system depended on building a national consensus and commanding stable long-term popular support. Second, he made the presidency the central, most influential institution in modern America’s political system. In addressing the country’s international and domestic problems, Roosevelt recognized the vital importance of remaining closely attentive to the full range of public sentiment around policy-making decisions—perhaps FDR’s most enduring lesson in effective leadership.

In addressing the country’s international and domestic problems, Roosevelt recognized the vital importance of remaining closely attentive to the full range of public sentiment around policy-making decisions—perhaps FDR’s most enduring lesson in effective leadership.

HarperCollins The Explosive Child [Sixth Edition] A1059640390
THE CLASSIC PARENTING GUIDE -- MORE THAN ONE MILLION COPIES SOLD A revised and updated 6th edition of the groundbreaking, research-based guide to understanding and parenting challenging children who frequently exhibit severe fits of temper, from a distinguished clinician and pioneer in the field. What’s an explosive child? A child who responds to routine problems with extreme frustration—crying; screaming, swearing, kicking, hitting, biting, spitting, destroying property, and worse. A child whose frequent, severe outbursts leave his or her parents feeling frustrated, scared, worried, and desperate for help. Most of these parents have tried everything for effective child behavior management—reasoning; explaining, punishing, sticker charts, therapy, medication—but to no avail. They can’t figure out why their child acts the way he or she does; they wonder why the strategies that work for other kids don’t work for theirs; and they don’t know what to do instead. Dr. Ross Greene, a distinguished clinician and pioneer in the treatment of kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, has worked with thousands of explosive children, and he has good news: these kids aren’t attention-seeking, manipulative, or unmotivated, and their parents aren’t passive, permissive pushovers. Rather, explosive kids are lacking some crucial skills in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving, and they require a different approach to parenting. Throughout this compassionate, insightful, and practical book, Dr. Greene provides a new conceptual framework for understanding their difficulties, based on research in the neurosciences. He explains why traditional parenting and treatment often don’t work with these children, and he describes what to do instead. Instead of relying on rewarding and punishing, Dr. Greene’s Collaborative & Proactive Solutions model provides a form of non-punitive discipline that promotes working with explosive children to solve the problems that precipitate explosive episodes, and teaching these kids the skills they lack. This compassionate and practical guide provides a new path forward for families. Inside, you’ll discover how to: Identify Lagging Skills: Learn why explosive kids lack crucial skills in flexibility, frustration tolerance, and problem-solving, and how this understanding changes everything about your approach. Solve Problems Collaboratively: Master the parent-proven process of working with your child to solve the problems that precipitate explosive episodes, instead of just managing the behavior. Implement Evidence-Based Parenting Strategies: Apply Dr. Greene's research-backed model to nurture your child's development and reduce conflict, without resorting to punishments that don’t work. Transform Family Dynamics: Move from a state of constant crisis to one of connection and mutual understanding, helping your child feel heard and restoring peace to your household.

HarperCollins Boundless Deep Hb A1035070920
*SHORTLISTED FOR THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE* *SHORTLISTED FOR THE POL ROGER DUFF COOPER PRIZE* A Book of the Year in the Times; Telegraph; Spectator; Financial Times; Observer; Waterstones and Daunt Books A dazzling new biography of young Tennyson by the prize-winning, bestselling author of The Age of Wonder. Alfred Lord Tennyson is now remembered - if he is remembered at all - as the gloomily bearded Poet Laureate, author of such clanking Victorian works as 'The Charge of the Light Brigade', and the mournful author of the lugubrious elegy In Memoriam. In this dazzling new biography, Richard Holmes reawakens this somnolent Victorian figure, brings him back to sparkling life, and unexpectedly transforms him. From the prize-winning and bestselling biographer of Shelley and Coleridge, and author of the landmark, critically acclaimed THE AGE OF WONDER, Holmes recovers in Young Tennyson an astonishingly magnetic and mercurial personality, a secretly expressive and highly emotional man but now haunted by the great intellectual - and above all the great scientific - issues of his time. The brilliant child of an obscure dysfunctional Lincolnshire family, terrorised by a drunken father, torn by unhappy love affairs but sustained by vivid friendships (especially that of Edward FitzGerald, the author of 'Omar Khayyam') Young Tennyson emerges in his first forty years as a memorable poet, hypnotically musical ('The Lady of Shalott') yet intensely engaged with the new astronomy, geology, biology - and even the psychiatry - of the age before Darwin. Tennyson's imagination and intellect were haunted by the eruption of three new fundamentally transformative scientific ideas - biological evolution, the notion of a godless, unpitying universe and of planetary extinction. These were as terrifying to Tennyson as climate catastrophe is to us today. Their impact brought him into contact with the life and scientific work of William Whewell (originally his university tutor), the astronomer John Herschel, the geologist Charles Lyell, the mathematician Mary Somerville, the computer pioneer Charles Babbage, and the brilliant science populariser Robert Chambers. He also shared his visions and anxieties with contemporary writers and social commentators like Thomas Carlyle and Charles Dickens, and poets like Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Edgar Allan Poe. Tennyson's work during these 'vagrant years' is suffused with an unsuspected and strangely modern magic. Holmes's extraordinary biography allows us to witness Tennyson wrestling with mind-altering ideas of geology and deep time, the vastness, beauty and terror of the new cosmology, and the challenges of social revolution. And how these inspired him to grapple with the idea of human mortality, the threat of suicide and depression, the struggle between love and loneliness, agnosticism and belief.

Brill Notational Knowledge A1077959846
Permanent external representations in the form of drawings, maps, musical scores, figures, graphs, writing, numerals, hallmarks and signatures are part of our daily landscape and permeate most social activities almost from the moment we are born. This book is about humans' appropriation, understanding and use of external representations. The authors, all established researchers, present first hand research in the domain of notational knowledge. They reflect on the peculiar features and representational mechanisms of notational systems based on cultural conventions such as musical notation, graphs, writing, numerals and mathematical notation as well as on unique notations that children create in new situations. There are two chapter clusters in the book. The first cluster considers these systems from a historical perspective. Authors focus on the characteristics of these systems in different cultures and at different times and analyze the ways in which notation systems evolve and transform our social interactions, our ideas about language and about other domains of knowledge. The second cluster of chapters takes a developmental perspective. In these chapters the authors focus on the individual appropriation of these systems and highlight the interest for studying permanent external representation as a domain of human development. In particular, authors explore the ways in which notation systems are acquired, the extent to which children are sensitive to their distinguishing constraints and to the particular contents they come to represent and question the future of notations. Both the historical and the developmental perspectives are crucial for understanding the relations between culture and cognition. We can learn about the human mind through analyzing the social processes of invention and transformations of cultural artifacts and also through the individual and social process of appropriation of the cultural artifacts already created. A common theme in the book is that permanent external representations are not just instruments for expressing given information or tools for communication, they are objects to think with. They not only keep record of existing knowledge but are themselves instrumental in the creation of new knowledge. There are conceptual, linguistic and esthetic distinctions that may be unattainable without notational means. The book will be useful for students of psychology, philosophy, linguistics and education and for every one interested in understanding ways in which knowledge is generated, recorded and scrutinized. Although there are other volumes on writing, literacy, and numeracy, and some chapters are available in other volumes on the history of writing, mathematics or musical notation, the present proposal is unique and timely for the range of notational systems it embraces, for including both an historical and a developmental perspective and for the number of theoretical frameworks it discusses.

First Book Award “[A] fast-moving and highly readable account of the violence that accompanied that partition…In its finest moments, Midnight's Furies is the story of what happens when a composite society comes apart.” – The New York Times Book Review “[A]n engaging and incisive contribution to the vast literature on partition and its aftermath. Mr. Hajari writes with grace, precision and an unerring eye for detail. ‘Midnight’s Furies’ is the best of recent offerings.” –Wall Street Journal "A pacey new narrative history of Partition which makes the complex and tragic story of the great divide into a pageturner: no mean feat." –Guardian; Best Summer Reads 2015 “A clear, accessible and compelling account of the events during partition… gifted storytelling. It is through his vivid description of small moments that Mr Hajari transforms an overwhelming event into an intimate experience...a gripping, skillfully crafted account of an awful period of South Asian history. It deserves a wide audience.” – The Economist "It has often been said that this is the golden age of nonfiction books. As if to prove the validity of that statement, Nisid Hajari has offered us Midnight's Furies, a compelling read, both dramatic and suspenseful . . . With the sensibilities of a novelist, Hajari artfully draws portraits of the various historical personalities involved, making the book thoroughly engaging." –Seattle Times "Hajari explores the roots of this tension in a beautifully written, deeply intelligent book about that crucial moment when Britain once again drew bad borders with calamitous consequences." – Fareed Zakaria, CNN "[A] fast-paced new narrative history of partition and its aftermath . . . One of [the book's] virtues is its more balanced portrait of Jinnah." – William Dalrymple, The New Yorker "Hajari’s book is a superb and highly readable account of not just the mayhem, but the political machinations that preceded Partition, including the three-way negotiations between Britain and the leaders of what were to become India and Pakistan." – The New York Review of Books "Hajari offers a ringside view of history with compelling psychological portrayals of those who made it . . . The politics of 1947-48 is so chillingly contemporary that it induces a sense of deja vu." –Times of India "[Hajari] has a riveting story to tell and he tells it well . . . The strength of this book is in its narrative, its marshalling of facts, and its objectivity in presenting them . . . And Hajari's fine ear for dialogue seldom lets him down." –The Wire (India) "[Hajari] frames the events surrounding Partition like a Greek tragedy, with epic, larger-than-life figures . . . [He] succeeds in vividly depicting the psychological scars that have dogged Pakistan and India." –Shelf Awareness "A well-researched tale of the last years of colonial rule on the Subcontinent . . .
