Bebra verlag Operation Gold A1077279752
The British-American spy tunnel extended approximately 330 metres from West Berlin into the GDR. From there, the intelligence services intercepted important telephone conversations between Soviet military personnel from May 1955 onwards. In total, over 400,000 telephone calls were intercepted. The Soviet intelligence service ended the operation in April 1956. The story is well known in film and literature, but only almost. In fact, an important piece of the puzzle piece has been missing until now, slumbering in the´archives of Berlin's underground world. It is the comprehensive documentation that was produced exclusively for the GDR Minister of the Interior, Karl Maron. It was generally considered lost. In fact, it contains previously unknown photos and details about the discovery of this tunnel and how it worked. A real find.It is introduced and explained by Dietmar Arnold, who knows Berlin's underworld like no other, and Helmut Müller-Enbergs, who studies Berlin's spies, sometimes for counter-espionage, sometimes as a researcher at the Free University of Berlin.

Wordsworth Editions Ltd The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money A1040849707
John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) is perhaps the foremost economic thinker of the twentieth century. On economic theory, he ranks with Adam Smith and Karl Marx; and his impact on how economics was practiced, from the Great Depression to the 1970s, was unmatched. The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money was first published in 1936. But its ideas had been forming for decades ? as a student at Cambridge, Keynes had written to a friend of his love for 'Free Trade and free thought'. Keynes's limpid style, concise prose, and vivid descriptions have helped to keep his ideas alive - as have the novelty and clarity, at times even the ambiguity, of his macroeconomic vision. He was troubled, above all, by high unemployment rates and large disparities in wealth and income. Only by curbing both, he thought, could individualism, 'the most powerful instrument to better the future', be safeguarded. The twenty-first century may yet prove him right. In The Economic Consequences of the Peace (1919), Keynes elegantly and acutely exposes the folly of imposing austerity on a defeated and struggling nation.

Storytel Publishing NL De data-economie A1080154041

GRIN Das Privilegium Minus A1005899021

Faber & Faber On the Calculation of Volume III A1076516677
The third volume of the Booker-shortlisted masterpiece about a woman lost in time. WINNER OF THE NORDIC COUNCIL PRIZE 'Absolutely, absolutely incredible.' Karl Ove Knausgård 'A total explosion.' Nicole Krauss 'Extraordinary.' Daisy Johnson 'Unforgettable.' Hernan Díaz 'Breathtaking.' Chetna Maroo 'Absolutely marvellous.' Lauren Groff Tara Selter is no longer alone. I have met someone who remembers. Yesterday. That is to say, I met him yesterday. But he remembers yesterday, too. He remembers that we met yesterday. Tara Selter has lived the eighteenth of November 1,143 times when she notices a break in the pattern: a man has changed his shirt. The man is Henry Dale, and he remembers all the days that have come before. He knows that time has fallen out of joint. Now they are two of a kind - trapped in the eighteenth of November, but no longer alone. Together they learn to share their present; their voices grow hoarse recounting their small battles against it and their bewilderment at the disintegrating world. Henry sees things differently to Tara: he does not think that time will put itself back together and he does not think that the future will come around. But he makes her realise that she is no longer the same person she was before this fault in time. And he makes her believe that there may be others to find within it. Kessinger Publishing, LLC Wage Labour And Capital A1002659154
Wage Labour and Capital is a book written by Karl Marx that explores the relationship between laborers and capitalists in a capitalist economy. Marx argues that the capitalist system exploits workers by paying them wages that are lower than the value of the goods and services they produce. This leads to a class struggle between the working class and the capitalist class. The book also discusses the concept of surplus value, which is the difference between the value of the goods produced by workers and the wages paid to them. Marx argues that this surplus value is the source of profit for capitalists. Wage Labour and Capital is considered an important work in Marxist theory and provides insight into the exploitation of workers in a capitalist economy. The interests of the capitalist and those of the worker are, therefore, one and the same, assert the bourgeois and their economists. Indeed! The worker perishes if capital does not employ him. Capital perishes if it does not exploit labour power, and in order to exploit it, it must buy it. The faster capital intended for production, productive capital, increases, the more, therefore, industry prospers, the more the bourgeoisie enriches itself and the better business is, the more workers. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Bloomsbury Continuum How to Think Like a Philosopher A1071299115
Bloomsbury presents How to Think Like a Philosopher by Peter Cave, read by Ben Onwukwe. In showing how the great philosophers of human history lived and thought – and what they thought about – Peter Cave provides an accessible and enjoyable introduction to thinking philosophically and how it can change our everyday lives. With a lightness of touch, he addresses questions such as: Is there anything 'out there' that gives meaning to our lives? Does reality tell us how we ought to live? What indeed is reality and what is appearance – and how can we tell the difference? This book paints vivid portraits of an assortment of inspiring thinkers: from Lao Tzu to Avicenna to Iris Murdoch; from Hannah Arendt to Socrates and Plato to Karl Marx; from Kierkegaard and Nietzsche to Sartre to Samuel Beckett – and let us not forget Lewis Carroll for some thought-provoking fantasies and Ludwig Wittgenstein for the anguishes of a genius. As well as displaying optimists and pessimists, believers and non-believers, the book displays relevance to current affairs, from free speech to abortion to the treatment of animals to our leaders' moral character. In each brief chapter, Cave brings to life these often prescient, always compelling philosophical thinkers, showing how their ways of approaching the world grew out of their own lives and times and how we may make valuable use of their insights today. Now, more than ever, we need to understand how to live, and how to understand the world around us. This is the perfect guide.

[…] (Claudia Widder und Roland Widder)

Cornerstone 1873 A1076776879
***SHORTLISTED FOR THE FINANCIAL TIMES AND STANDARD CHARTERED BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD 2026*** 'The book to read right now [is 1873] . . . All of us are reading this' - Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, The Times From the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Lords of Finance comes a brilliant account of the earliest truly global financial calamity. On Friday, 9 May 1873 the Vienna stock market collapsed. Four months later Wall Street was in trouble. Elsewhere, as panic selling spread across financial markets, some countries defaulted on their debts, while the Bank of England was forced to raise its rates to their highest level in a century. It was the first global crash in history. And it was to have calamitous consequences. In his powerful new book, the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Lords of Finance tells the epic story of that crash and explores its economic and human costs. He describes how the growth of the international bond market in the 1850s and 60s funded a frenzy of speculation in railways, construction and nation-building. He examines those who became swept up in the boom, from leading bankers like the Rothschild dynasty to national leaders both visionary and venal, to rogues and chancers like the shameless Jay Gould, to such sceptical onlookers as Mark Twain and Karl Marx. He then traces how, in the subsequent panic, investors were left with catastrophic losses, while governments on both sides of the Atlantic rushed misguidedly to reorder the world's financial system. As he shows, the blunders made as the crisis unfolded set the stage for twenty years of deflation, and a punitive legacy of aggrieved populism that infected every part of the globe. Amid the crash's many aftershocks, the US abandoned Reconstruction, European powers staged an economic takeover of the heavily indebted Ottoman Empire, and the principle of international free trade came under pressure. Meanwhile there was a revival of antisemitic movements in Europe that blamed 'Jewish finance' for the disaster. A brilliant evocation of a key turning point in world history, 1873 is also a masterly examination of the unforeseen political and social consequences of financial misjudgements.

Grand Central Publishing Arguably A1036381511
"All first-rate criticism first defines what we are confronting," the late, great jazz critic Whitney Balliett once wrote. By that measure, the essays of Christopher Hitchens are in the first tier. For nearly four decades, Hitchens has been telling us, in pitch-perfect prose, what we confront when we grapple with first principles-the principles of reason and tolerance and skepticism that define and inform the foundations of our civilization-principles that, to endure, must be defended anew by every generation. "A short list of the greatest living conversationalists in English," said The Economist, "would probably have to include Christopher Hitchens, Sir Patrick Leigh-Fermor, and Sir Tom Stoppard. Great brilliance, fantastic powers of recall, and quick wit are clearly valuable in sustaining conversation at these cosmic levels. Charm may be helpful, too." Hitchens-who staunchly declines all offers of knighthood-hereby invites you to take a seat at a democratic conversation, to be engaged, and to be reasoned with. His knowledge is formidable, an encyclopedic treasure, and yet one has the feeling, reading him, of hearing a person thinking out loud, following the inexorable logic of his thought, wherever it might lead, unafraid to expose fraudulence, denounce injustice, and excoriate hypocrisy. Legions of readers, admirers and detractors alike, have learned to read Hitchens with something approaching awe at his felicity of language, the oxygen in every sentence, the enviable wit and his readiness, even eagerness, to fight a foe or mount the ramparts. Here, he supplies fresh perceptions of such figures as varied as Charles Dickens, Karl Marx, Rebecca West, George Orwell, J.G. Ballard, and Philip Larkin are matched in brilliance by his pungent discussions and intrepid observations, gathered from a lifetime of traveling and reporting from such destinations as Iran, China, and Pakistan. Hitchens's directness, elegance, lightly carried erudition, critical and psychological insight, humor, and sympathy-applied as they are here to a dazzling variety of subjects-all set a standard for the essayist that has rarely been matched in our time. What emerges from this indispensable volume is an intellectual self-portrait of a writer with an exemplary steadiness of purpose and a love affair with the delights and seductions of the English language, a man anchored in a profound and humane vision of the human longing for reason and justice.

Karl-May Karl May auf der Bühne - Register A1079232224

Aphoria Verlag 365 Quotes for a Daily Dose of Dry Humor A1077486303
Satirical quotes for every day Whether in everyday life or on special events: An appropriate quote can save any situation and provide new momentum. How-ever, if you want to stand out from the crowd and show character, you need to demonstrate originality. My suggestion: humor. Brutal-ly truthful and slightly mean humor, to be precise. Instead of tor-menting your fellow human beings with corny positive banter, you can turn the tables and hand out a few snappy sayings. Dry humor disguised as original quotes An atrocious quip at the right time invigorates every relationship, shakes things up and creates a new perspective. It's not about of-fending the other person (at least not permanently), but solely about the surprising impulse and the shared joy of a little blunt-ness. The ultimate collection of satirical quotes The quotes in this book come from writers, politicians, scientists, actors, artists and other important personalities. In short: from suc-cessful people who have achieved great things and developed a passion for sarcastic remarks and subtle jibes. I would like to pass this curious collection on to you. A cheeky quote every day In this book, each day of the year has its own quote. Although I have assigned each quote to a specific date, this does not mean that you have to follow my pre-selection. You can read the book in a criss-cross fashion and remind yourself of your favorite sayings over and over again. I have also categorized the quotes themati-cally so that you can quickly find the most (in)appropriate words for special occasions such as birthdays, weddings or family celebra-tions. A little foretaste 15th January: “An intelligent man sometimes needs to be drunk to spend time with idiots.” - Ernest Hemingway 11th February: “In old age, children are a comfort as long as they don't come to visit you.” - Sarah Bernhardt 18th March: “You never know what's going to happen in this world. I'll just keep my mouth shut. That's a good idea.” - Gertrude Stein 1st April: “In our time there is a lot of talk about irony and humor, especially by people who have never been able to practice it.” - Søren Kierkegaard 4th May: “There may be better air in heaven, but there is certainly better company in hell.” - George Bernard Shaw 27th June: “There are many people I would like to miss right now.” - Tomi Ungerer 4th July: “The men of today are also no longer what they have never been.” - Kylie Minogue 6th August: “Digging a pit for others is exhausting, but it almost always pays off.” - David Herbert Lawrence 26th September: “The best proof of knowledge of human nature is quiet homicidal desires.” - Frank Sinatra 20th October: “Silent people become even more boring when they start talking.” - Jane Austen 15th November: “Gloating is a never-ending source of strength and serenity.” - Frank Billings Kellogg 24th December: “A family reunion is not only the fault of those who host it, but also of those who do not prevent it.” - Karl Kraus Always a proper saying on hand In this book 365 mean quotes are waiting for you so that you can pick up a new dose of dry humor and quick wit every day. The next time you want to "surprise" your partner, have a ready saying for your colleague at the office, or you need a little cheering up your-self, you can open this treasure trove of quotes, read a few lines and then hit the ground running with new energy.
