The Kru’s familiarity with European trade on the Kru Coast (modern Liberia) from at least the sixteenth century played a fundamental role in their decision to expand their wage earning opportunities under contract with the British. The establishment of Freetown in 1792 enabled the Kru to engage in systematized work for British merchants, ship captains, and naval officers. Kru workers increased their migration to Freetown establishing what appears to be their first permanent labouring community beyond their homeland on the Kru Coast. Their community in Freetown known as Krutown provided a readily available labour pool and ensured their regular employment on board British commercial ships and Royal Navy vessels circumnavigating the Atlantic and beyond. In the process, the Kru established a network of Krutowns and community settlements in many Atlantic ports including Cape Coast, Fernando Po, Ascension Island, Cape of Good Hope, and in the British Caribbean in Demerara and Port of Spain. Many works, fictional as well as academic and advisory were written throughout the ages that deal with the relations between men and women, not only by female authors, but also by male. Rooting in the basic dogmata of patriarchal society, the oppression of the ¿weaker¿ sex and the regard of women as the ¿weaker vessel¿ was justified with the Bible, anatomical facts and biological beliefs. Usually a woman was expected to be subject to her husband, father or other male superior, her job was to stay at home and take care of children and household. Great Britain was no exception to this rule. Nonetheless it is a curious fact that the great country has existed many years under a female monarch, and this not only once. Two of the world¿s most popular monarchs, who both reigned over 40 years, were the British queens Elizabeth I and Victoria. The first ruled over the country in the sixteenth, the second in the nineteenth century, but both were cause for many debates and gossip in English society of their respecting times. Each of the two women was an extraordinary woman and an important monarch, who achieved a lot for her country, and yet in their being women, both royals were typical for the women of their time. It aims to provide close insight into visual culture as well as a differentiated assessment of the question, in what settings and with which needs in mind compositions were being iterated and replicated in the period from the first century B.C.E. to the second century C.E. While focusing on the participating protagonists and their intentions as well as on aspects of representation, a special emphasis is placed on the alterability of images and their contextual embedment. In the first part of the book the technical foundations are being examined in a complementary approach through the example of the so-called toreutic plaster casts (in particular moldings of vessel walls showing reliefs). Here in particular, the situational conditionality of the (re-)production becomes evident, as one finds on equal footing complete and – even more frequently – partial reproductions, which served as a starting point for new compositions in the sense of the modern ‘copy and paste’ and were received as such by other handicraft branches. The main part of the work is concerned with serial pieces in the field of marble reliefs as well as relief carriers belonging to the luxurious Roman décor. After discussing the term ‘series’ the focus of the subsequent three detailed studies is on the congruency and variance respectively between serial pieces, whereat the latter is being interpreted as an indication for external influences on image reproduction. In this sense in the case of the Piraeus reliefs selective deviations in design and motif within the series of this find come to attention, which can be read as a confident, independent exertion of influence by the executive sculptors within the cultural setting of the Second Sophistic. The next case study deals with a multi-piece consecration gift in the Temple of Diana in Nemi and interprets the two appendant series and their variance with regard to the representational intensions of the benefactor. The observations made in these case studies are being presented with further serial pieces in a last detailed study. On this basis, overarching phenomena within luxurious Roman décor, within which the subject of serial production forms a characteristic facet of visual culture, become evident. The work ties in with current research discussions from both Classical Archaeology and Art and Cultural Science and aims to broaden the established view of the ancient reproduction of images as a traditional question of diachronic pictorial reference or technological history respectively. Treasure Island is an adventure novel by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, narrating a tale of "buccaneers and buried gold". First published as a book on 23 May 1883, it was originally serialized in the children's magazine Young Folks between 1881 and 1882 under the title Treasure Island or, the mutiny of the Hispaniola with Stevenson adopting the pseudonym Captain George North. Traditionally considered a coming-of-age story, Treasure Island is a tale known for its atmosphere, characters and action, and also as a wry commentary on the ambiguity of morality — as seen in Long John Silver — unusual for children's literature now and then. It is one of the most frequently dramatized of all novels. The influence of Treasure Island on popular perceptions of pirates is enormous, including treasure maps marked with an "X", schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen carrying parrots on their shoulders. Short Summary of the Book: The novel is divided into six parts and 34 chapters: The novel opens in the seaside village of Black Hill Cove in south-west England (to Stevenson, in his letters and in the related fictional play Admiral Guinea, near Barnstaple, Devon) in the mid-18th century. The narrator, James "Jim" Hawkins, is the young son of the owners of the Admiral Benbow Inn. An old drunken seaman named Billy Bones becomes a long-term lodger at the inn, only paying for about the first week of his stay. Jim quickly realizes that Bones is in hiding, and that he particularly dreads meeting an unidentified seafaring man with one leg. Some months later, Bones is visited by a mysterious sailor named Black Dog. Their meeting turns violent, Black Dog flees and Bones suffers a stroke. While Jim cares for him, Bones confesses that he was once the mate of a notorious late pirate, Captain Flint, and that his old crewmates want Bones' sea chest. Some time later, another of Bones' crew mates, a blind man named Pew, appears at the inn and forces Jim to lead him to Bones. Pew gives Bones a paper. After Pew leaves, Bones opens the paper to discover it is marked with the Black Spot, a pirate summons, with the warning that he has until ten o'clock to meet their demands. Bones drops dead of apoplexy (in this context, a stroke) on the spot. Jim and his mother open Bones' sea chest to collect the amount due to them for Bones' room and board, but before they can count out the money that they are owed, they hear pirates approaching the inn and are forced to flee and hide, Jim taking with him a mysterious oilskin packet from the chest. The pirates, led by Pew, find the sea chest and the money, but are frustrated that there is no sign of "Flint's fist". Customs men approach and the pirates escape to their vessel (all except for Pew, who is accidentally run down and killed by the agents' horses).
