E. Salvador Let's Pretend A1077701571
It's supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, but it's everything but that for Anna Lopez. Not only have her parents disowned her, completely cutting her off, but her landlord is hiking her rent at the beginning of the year. With the New Year around the corner and her being on winter break, she has a few weeks to figure out a new game plan. Wishing for a Christmas miracle seems hard but not impossible, and she's willing to do anything to make it happen. Until it happens in the form of a six-foot-four hockey player, who she doesn't have fond memories of. King's Yard University hockey star Sylas Lenoir Alves has everything anyone could wish for. However, there is one thing he's not content with and wishes he could end: the need his mom has to pair him with a girl he has no interest in dating or ever marrying. Feeling overwhelmed with her insistence, he's wishing for a miracle. Luckily for him, he quickly finds the answers to his problem, but it happens to be the girl who couldn't care less who he is. While Anna wants nothing to do with the arrogant player, she can't help but cave when he proposes something that would benefit both of them. Soon, they find themselves tangled in a lie, but that lie evolves into something neither one of them expected. Like how much they enjoy being in each other's company or how hard they're falling for each other.

Oxford Academic Corporate Social Responsibility A1052395098
Oxford Academic Corporate Social Responsibility A1052395098
In its journey from the margins to the mainstream, corporate social responsibility has become a significant part of the business agenda. Whilst society has always held expectations of business that go beyond maximising profits, the backdrop against which businesses now operate - characterised by financial crisis, climate change, political shifts, and population growth - has seen CSR become increasingly central to the ability of businesses to address global concerns. How businesses manage the requirements of the 2016 Paris Agreement, implications of the growing 'gig economy', and the increasing importance of a CSR brand are just some of the contemporary issues explored in this fourth edition. The engaging, accessible style supports a critical perspective, while a forward-thinking outlook encourages you to consider how the interactions of business and society will continue to evolve. How emerging business models, such as Uber, are governed; why Pakistan's football manufacturing industry takes an interest in its workers' sexual health; and what it takes to establish the Global Business Coalition for Women's Economic Empowerment are just some of the new case studies that illustrate the book's global reach. With more cases and examples than any other CSR textbook, initiatives as well as failures are explored in real businesses contexts, bringing the book's comprehensive coverage to life. This book is supported by online resources. For students: Additional case study sources - useful links for where to source further case studies and examples. Further reading - a comprehensive list of research to aid research. Suggested films - a list of films that illustrate issues relevant to CSR managers. Sources on regulations and governance - links to important legislation and guidelines affecting CSR Web exercises - links to relevant websites direct you to valuable sources of information. Journal club - links to seminal journal articles along with commentary on the paper, critical questions, and key points to consider. For lecturers: Figures and tables from the book - for use in lectures and seminars.

Thames & Hudson This is Not Fashion A1045782896
This is the story of streetwear. King ADZ and Wilma Stone recount how a long line of subcultural movements have been incorporated into a multi-billion-dollar global industry and taken over both the high street and high-end fashion. Starting from the building blocks of repurposed sportswear, workwear and combat-wear, they explain just how it is that a revolutionary sartorial trend has evolved to encompass a vast range of disparate tribes, offering a powerful sense of belonging and identity to all. The story begins in 1972, in Jersey City, USA, with the birth of the first ever streetwear shop, Trash and Vaudeville. The journey then encompasses punk, Ivy League preppies, the hip-hop kings and queens of Harlem, the dresser/casual movement born out of British football culture, the skater scene of California, the paninari scooter-brats of Milan, and much more. We are shown how streetwear, worn with integrity and swagger, has transcended culture, race, gender and age to become a lasting worldwide phenomenon. Whether focusing on major brands such as Stüssy, Carhartt, Tommy Hilfiger and SHUT or today's up-and-comers from South African townships or downtown Seoul, this dynamic study surveys the scene. It also takes a look at how the Internet era has changed the ways streetwear is sold and consumed, and how the field may evolve in the future. Packed with profiles of industry pioneers, Q&As with key figures and over 300 illustrations, this is the complete history of fashion's fastest-growing and most influential movement.

Princeton University Press Language-Paradox-Poetics A1038969285
Princeton University Press Language-Paradox-Poetics A1038969285
In attempting to define a "poetics of paradox" from a traditional Chinese standpoint, James Liu explores through a comparative approach linguistic, textual, and interpretive problems of relevance to Western literary criticism. Liu's study evolves from a paradoxical view--originating from early Confucian and Daoist philosophical texts--that the less is "said" in poetry, the more is "meant." Such a view implied the existence of paradox in the very use of language and led traditional Chinese hermeneutics to a study of "metaparadox"--the use of language to explicate texts the meaning of which transcends language itself. As Liu illustrates elements of traditional Chinese hermeneutics with examples of poetic and critical works, he makes comparisons with the works of such Western literary figures as Shakespeare, Mallarme, Pound, Ionesco, Derrida, and Shepard. The comparisons bring to light a crucial difference in conceptualization of language: Chinese critics, especially those influenced by Daoism and Buddhism, seem to have held a deitic view of language (language points to things), whereas Western critics seem to have thought of language as primarily mimetic (language represents things). Liu examines the consequences of these views, showing how both offer insights into the "meaning" of text and to what extent both have led to a "metaparadox of interpretation." Originally published in 1988. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Random House LLC US Beginning Middle End A1077338714
From the beloved, award-winning author of the culture-changing hits Lost Children Archive and Tell Me How It Ends comes her most powerful and page-turning novel yet: the tale of a mother and daughter traveling together after the collapse of a marriage and the dissolution of their traditional family structure. Valeria Luiselli's novel opens the morning a mother and her teenage daughter arrive in Sicily, during a summer of rapidly-changing winds, volcanic rumbles, and sudden tempests. They’ve landed near the ancient ruins where the narrator’s grandmother worked long ago on an archaeological dig. How do you begin again, the mother wonders, pondering her family line, and what if the new beginning you're imagining is actually the end? While the mother tries to figure out how to reconstruct their lives together—cooking meals side by side, reading out loud to each other, playing chess, bickering and making-up—her deeply intelligent, inquisitive daughter begins to take the reins of the story. She becomes increasingly curious about her great-grandmother’s past as a digger in archaeological sites and ancient tombs, and urges her mother to leave their enclosed day-to-day in search for answers about their family’s past and future. Beginning Middle End evolves into a road novel of exquisite tenderness. In their drive through Sicily, mother and daughter cross paths with the island's migrants, storekeepers, and elders, but also its volcanoes, its winds and its waters. As their trip progresses, it becomes a journey to origins—not just to the familial past across continents, languages, and generations, but also further back to a mythical and geological past. With her own mother showing signs of dementia, the narrator confronts the primary questions of life: Where is home? Where do we dwell and seek safety? How are a family’s memories made and what happens when they disappear? Warm, funny, and poetic, this novel is an ode to imagination and possibility in dark times.

Bloomsbury Business The Modern Maverick A1071299116
Bloomsbury Business The Modern Maverick A1071299116
Bloomsbury presents The Modern Maverick written and read by Ed Haddon. Imagine designing a race that only you could win. Now imagine that race was your life. You're done with living by other people's rules. It's time to define your own version of success and set free your inner maverick. Success is something that many of us are encouraged to pursue from a young age – but what defines 'success'? Many people are taught to set goals in pursuit of a generic definition of success that is dictated by society: chase money, pass exams, build profile, attract followers, or generate likes. Even if we do reach the top of the mountain, we often find it to be less than we expected. Living someone else's life is draining; individuals are tired and society is poorer as a consequence. The Modern Maverick sets out a roadmap for a different way forward. A way that combines purpose and profit. A way that helps you figure out your own definition of success and gives you the courage and tools to pursue it. It moves beyond a general question around purpose, and instead focuses on identifying what you are truly passionate about, what you are uniquely good at, what you can get paid enough for – and how all of that dovetails with what the world needs. Using a distilled set of 'Maverick' principles, the books presents a clear 4D process to help you create the life you want: 1. Discover – what are you uniquely able to do 2. Dream – about what is possible for your life 3. Do – create and put into action your Maverick plan 4. Develop – ensure the plan evolves and deepens By helping you find the best version of yourself, your work and your relationships, the book shows you how to build your inner Maverick. By becoming clearer and more intentional about how and where you spend your energy and focus, you can create a life where you have positive impact, autonomy, choice and time. A win for you, but – crucially – a win for those close to you, and, over time, a win for society at large.

Brill Notational Knowledge A1077959846
Brill Notational Knowledge A1077959846
Permanent external representations in the form of drawings, maps, musical scores, figures, graphs, writing, numerals, hallmarks and signatures are part of our daily landscape and permeate most social activities almost from the moment we are born. This book is about humans' appropriation, understanding and use of external representations. The authors, all established researchers, present first hand research in the domain of notational knowledge. They reflect on the peculiar features and representational mechanisms of notational systems based on cultural conventions such as musical notation, graphs, writing, numerals and mathematical notation as well as on unique notations that children create in new situations. There are two chapter clusters in the book. The first cluster considers these systems from a historical perspective. Authors focus on the characteristics of these systems in different cultures and at different times and analyze the ways in which notation systems evolve and transform our social interactions, our ideas about language and about other domains of knowledge. The second cluster of chapters takes a developmental perspective. In these chapters the authors focus on the individual appropriation of these systems and highlight the interest for studying permanent external representation as a domain of human development. In particular, authors explore the ways in which notation systems are acquired, the extent to which children are sensitive to their distinguishing constraints and to the particular contents they come to represent and question the future of notations. Both the historical and the developmental perspectives are crucial for understanding the relations between culture and cognition. We can learn about the human mind through analyzing the social processes of invention and transformations of cultural artifacts and also through the individual and social process of appropriation of the cultural artifacts already created. A common theme in the book is that permanent external representations are not just instruments for expressing given information or tools for communication, they are objects to think with. They not only keep record of existing knowledge but are themselves instrumental in the creation of new knowledge. There are conceptual, linguistic and esthetic distinctions that may be unattainable without notational means. The book will be useful for students of psychology, philosophy, linguistics and education and for every one interested in understanding ways in which knowledge is generated, recorded and scrutinized. Although there are other volumes on writing, literacy, and numeracy, and some chapters are available in other volumes on the history of writing, mathematics or musical notation, the present proposal is unique and timely for the range of notational systems it embraces, for including both an historical and a developmental perspective and for the number of theoretical frameworks it discusses.

The True Life of PT Barnum "The show business has all phases and grades of dignity, from the exhibition of a monkey to the exposition of that highest art in music or the drama, which entrances empires and secures for the gifted artist a world-wide fame which princes well might envy. Men, women and children, who cannot live on gravity alone, need something to satisfy their gayer, lighter moods and hours, and he who ministers to this want is in a business established by the Author of our nature. If he worthily fulfills his mission, and amuses without corrupting, he need never feel that he has lived in vain. " PT Barnum From the Publisher The original autobiography of the World's Greatest Showman, P.T. Barnum, now translated to modern English and illustrated with new images of his amazing ground-breaking acts. Phineas Taylor Barnum came from humble means to revolutionize the entertainment industry of his time and lay the foundation of the entertainment industry we know today. His visionary ability to create and market new and innovative acts transformed the world and moved society forward towards a new era of understanding and inclusiveness. His marketing skill and shrewd business skills transformed common and mundane acts into "must see" cultural events. Barnum skill as a showman included marketing such unique features as educated dogs, industrious fleas, automatons, jugglers, ventriloquists, living statuary, tableaux, gypsies, albinos, fat boys, giants, dwarfs, rope-dancers, live "Yankees," pantomime, instrumental music, singing and dancing in great variety, dioramas, panoramas, models of Niagara, Dublin, Paris, and Jerusalem; Hannington's dioramas of the Creation, the Deluge, Fairy Grotto, Storm at Sea; the first English Punch and Judy in this country, Italian Fantoceini, mechanical figures, fancy glass-blowing, knitting machines and other triumphs in the mechanical arts; dissolving views, American Indians, who enacted their warlike and religious ceremonies on the stage, — these, among others, entertained audiences by the tens of thousands and made Barnum a fortune and made his name synonymous with show business. But Barnum's genius was not limited to parlor tricks and freak shows, although this was a common criticism of his shows. His well-earned title of the World's Greatest Showman was earned by his ability to evolve his show and his techniques throughout his career. Originally, Barnum was able to transform men like Charles Sherwood Stratton, a dwarf who had been the subject of ridicule throughout his entire life, into famous characters such as "General Tom Thumb", a regal and authoritative figure who would stand before the Queen of England. Another illustration of Barnum's amazing showman abilities is perhaps best showcased in his signing of the "Swedish Nightingale" Jenny Lind, a favorite opera singer of the elite members of Victorian Era's society. Barnum signed Lind and included her in his tour, considerably raising the bar and perception of his performances. How amazing would it have been to see P.T. Barnum in his prime, to listen to him describe his inspirations and his journey, and to understand how almost two hundred years ago he began his path towards becoming the World's Greatest Showman. Now, thanks to the re-publication of this volume, complete with new illustrations, we can hear Barnum's story from his own pen directly in his own words. We hope you enjoy pulling up a chair and sitting down for a conversation with the World's Greatest Showman, P.T. Barnum.
