Copycat The Old Man and the Sea A1070053044
In "The Old Man and the Sea," Ernest Hemingway weaves a poignant tale of resilience, courage, and the human spirit through the story of Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who battles a colossal marlin in the Gulf Stream. Employing his signature minimalist prose, Hemingway immerses readers in an exploration of existential themes, underscoring the dignity in struggle and the connection between man and nature. Set against a backdrop of post-war disillusionment, the novella captures the quiet yet profound philosophical undertones emblematic of Hemingway's later works, encapsulating the battle against the inevitable decline of age and fortune. Ernest Hemingway, an accomplished journalist and a pivotal figure in the 20th-century literary canon, drew inspiration from his extensive travel and experiences, notably his time in Cuba, which provided a rich tapestry for this narrative. The author's own struggles with identity, masculinity, and the burden of legacy profoundly influenced his creation of Santiago. Reflecting Hemingway's interest in the noble aspects of failure, this novella is both deeply personal and universally resonant. Highly recommended for both literature enthusiasts and those seeking introspection, "The Old Man and the Sea" is a masterclass in storytelling and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It invites readers to reflect on their own battles, making it not just a story of one man but a lens through which to explore the human condition.

Penguin US Andrew Carnegie A1001484760
A New York Times bestseller! Beautifully crafted and fun to read. Louis Galambos, The Wall Street Journal Nasaw s research is extraordinary. San Francisco Chronicle The definitive account of the life of Andrew Carnegie Celebrated historian David Nasaw, whom The New York Times Book Review has called "a meticulous researcher and a cool analyst," brings new life to the story of one of America's most famous and successful businessmen and philanthropists in what will prove to be the biography of the season. Born of modest origins in Scotland in 1835, Andrew Carnegie is best known as the founder of Carnegie Steel. His rags to riches story has never been told as dramatically and vividly as in Nasaw's new biography. Carnegie, the son of an impoverished linen weaver, moved to Pittsburgh at the age of thirteen. The embodiment of the American dream, he pulled himself up from bobbin boy in a cotton factory to become the richest man in the world. He spent the rest of his life giving away the fortune he had accumulated and crusading for international peace. For all that he accomplished and came to represent to the American public a wildly successful businessman and capitalist, a self-educated writer, peace activist, philanthropist, man of letters, lover of culture, and unabashed enthusiast for American democracy and capitalism Carnegie has remained, to this day, an enigma. Nasaw explains how Carnegie made his early fortune and what prompted him to give it all away, how he was drawn into the campaign first against American involvement in the Spanish-American War and then for international peace, and how he used his friendships with presidents and prime ministers to try to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. With a trove of new material unpublished chapters of Carnegie's Autobiography; personal letters between Carnegie and his future wife, Louise, and other family members; his prenuptial agreement; diaries of family and close friends; his applications for citizenship; his extensive correspondence with Henry Clay Frick; and dozens of private letters to and from presidents Grant, Cleveland, McKinley, Roosevelt, and British prime ministers Gladstone and Balfour, as well as friends Herbert Spencer, Matthew Arnold, and Mark Twain Nasaw brilliantly plumbs the core of this fascinating and complex man, deftly placing his life in cultural and political context as only a master storyteller can.

HarperCollins The Women of Wild Hill A1079585677
'The Women of Wild Hill has everything you could want, with a fascinating tapestry of characters and an interesting magic system' Daily Express 'Perfection! An Inspiration! A must-read!' FIVE star reader review 'The Women of Wild Hill certainly weaves its magic from the very first page. Such a powerful story of strong and determined women' FIVE star reader review * * * * It's always three, isn't it? Three furies, three fates, three graces. Science still has no explanation for the number three, but women instinctively feel its power. We don't know why three works, but we know it does. Three is the number that gets the job done. Five generations of Sadie Duncan's descendants claimed the beautiful Wild Hill as their home, each generation of witches stronger than the last. Then, in the aftermath of a tragedy, the last of the Duncans, prophesised to be the most powerful of their kind, abandoned Wild Hill forever. Brigid moved to California and turned her gift into fame and fortune. Her sister Phoebe settled on a ranch in Texas, where women visit in secret for her tonics, and Phoebe's daughter, Sybil, became a famous chef. Now Brigid, Phoebe, and Sibyl have been brought back to Wild Hill for one thing: The Old One, furious at the path mankind has taken, has chosen them to lead a magical revolution. But first, the Duncan women must confront their pasts, because only once they have each stepped into their power can they fulfil their destiny ... Blending witchcraft, magic, and family legacy, The Women of Wild Hillis a modern-day novel about witches and sisterhood that will make everyone believe the power to change the world is in their hands. * * * * Praise for Kirsten Miller: 'A roar of rage, a pacy page-turner, I loved it' Marian Keyes 'A story that's as furious as it is tender. A look at where justice fits in a world that shows women so little mercy' Emily Henry 'Kirsten Miller has that rare ability to take a serious subject and make it very, very funny' James Patterson 'A proper smash-the-patriarchy read with tension and a compelling plot to boot ... Loved it' Harriet Tyce 'Like nothing you've ever read before' Redmagazine

Collins's detailed knowledge of the period trickles through the tale wrapping the reader in a vivid shifting world as it moves between the 14th century and present day. Cleverly researched and exquisitely written, The Lady of The Loch is a timeless story of hope, family and love. I loved it.' Alexandra Walsh What readers are saying about Elena Collins: 'Amazing book, couldn't put it down. Beautiful story, held me focused from the very start. A must read if you are a lover of history, romance and spirits. Perfect!!!' 'Beautifully written, totally believable, an historical eye opener and love story. What more could you ask for?' 'I adore how this author weaves the past and present. All three of her books have familiar settings for me, and so, it was easy for me to picture the places; that said, she's described them so beautifully, I can see everything just as a picture. Great writing in my "book". I tend to always enjoy the past timeline rather than the present, but get bored with historical novels?! I'd recommend Elena Collins until I'm blue in the face.' 'This time slip novel is totally believable and beautifully crafted. The emotions from another time are strong enough to resonate in today's world. You just want to read and read and not put it down. This author's books are always delightful.' 'Another beautifully written book from this author. Her writing really draws you in and you can feel the atmosphere oozing out of every page. Loved this story and can't wait for more books by Elena Collins.

ADMX Publishing Ten Decisions A1081129186
Most people spend enormous energy optimizing the small decisions of daily life — productivity systems, budgeting apps, morning routines — while leaving the choices that truly shape their futures to inertia, social pressure, and chance. In Ten Decisions: The Choices That Build a Life, behavioral scientist and decision theorist Ezra Tovell argues that 80 to 90 percent of a person's life trajectory — financial standing, relationship quality, health, satisfaction — is determined by roughly ten "root decisions," and that learning to identify, deliberate over, and protect those decisions is the central skill of adult life.Drawing on years of research into long-term life trajectories and systematic biases in decision-making, Tovell shows how wealth, opportunity, and freedom are built not through brilliance or luck, but through a small number of choices made with genuine intention. Beginning with the money beliefs absorbed in childhood — the silent emotional curriculum that shapes financial behavior more powerfully than any budgeting tool — the book traces the hidden architecture of a financially meaningful life.Readers will learn why wages, no matter how high, rarely build real wealth without the shift to ownership, how to distinguish true assets from expensive liabilities masquerading as prosperity, why the home most people call their greatest asset may in fact be their most costly trap, and how psychological walls — loss aversion, learned helplessness, cynicism, fear of judgment, and identity lock — prevent intelligent people from acting on what they already know.Ten Decisions also confronts the modern attention crisis head-on. In an era of information overload, the greatest threat to wealth-building is not ignorance but distraction. Tovell shows readers how to design a personal wealth system — automated, low-cost, and defensible — that protects good behavior from a world engineered to disrupt it.Through historical examples from ancient Athens and Sparta to Benjamin Franklin and the Rothschild family, alongside research from Thomas Piketty, Robert Shiller, Carol Dweck, Brad Klontz, Raj Chetty, and John Bogle, the book weaves behavioral economics, decision theory, and practical financial strategy into a unified method. Case studies of ordinary people — a janitor who quietly amassed eight million dollars, a secretary whose patience turned one small stock purchase into a fortune — demonstrate that extraordinary outcomes are available to unspectacular people who make a handful of choices well. The book closes with a 90-day action blueprint and a chapter on financial parenting, arguing that the most important legacy any adult can pass on is not money itself but the beliefs, habits, and emotional patterns that determine whether the next generation will be equipped to make their own root decisions wisely. For readers of Jordan Peterson and Greg McKeown, Ten Decisions is both a rigorous framework and a deeply practical guide — a book about thinking clearly and acting deliberately in the moments that matter most.

Mel C. Thompson San Francisco Tarot A1077193581
The ebook version of this project doesn't come with the San Francisco Tarot cards themselves as they don't present well in this format. But since most of the project now consists of the writing behind the cards (in the form of ill-tempered essays, comedic rants and biographical-historical detours) I decided to make the writings available separately for the readers who don't have time to go hunting down the paperback version. This booklet contains sixty character-cultural sketches each one-page long, that describe the sixty most common phenomena one must live with in the Bay Area. Each of these character-cultural sketches is located (in the paperback version) behind a page designed to look like an extremely primitive fortune-telling card. (Art was not the main purpose of this project, and so the cards, were they in this version, would look quite crude; so ebook readers aren't missing much anyway.) In the paperback version, each facing page would be like the next card in a deck, and it would predict that you will meet with one of the archetypal people or experiences that must be endured by the residents of the City of San Francisco. (But the title of each character-cultural essay can just as easily serve at the fortune-telling line, so to speak. Now the project, as previously mentioned, is called San Francisco Tarot, but as you'll soon find out, these archetypes are not limited to San Francisco; and if you live anywhere between San Diego and Seattle, you've certainly seen all of these people and things before (presuming that the pattern-recognition software in your brain hasn't already been disabled by peer pressure). Furthermore, in the paperback version, each of the "cards" contains a "Portentous Quote," usually based on things I've heard from the aforementioned personality types. Here they are posted just beneath each "essay" title. And upon reading several of these quotes, you might even say to yourself, "Hey, I know these guys." But the book has two other purposes, one biographical and the other historical. The biographical purpose was to weave the Bay Area portion of my life-story through yet another lens. The material here will not be new to some people, but the "deck" model provided a new perspective and a new writing format that forced different details and different takes on what would otherwise seem like all-too-familiar problems and personalities. And because the themes chosen sought for a kind of universality, you might find yourself described among these cards; and you might see your old story in a new, albeit unflattering way. And too, you might see the recent history of San Francisco, the period from 1989-2025 in a new light too, perhaps uncovering features of the culture that you had overlooked or screened out. You might even find out about a subculture or two that had not yet seized your attention. Additionally, one could add two sub-purposes to this project, sub-purposes that appear in virtually all of my projects, namely that of presenting barbarically-insensitive comedy and harpy-like, grievance-filled moralizing. I often say that if a person walks away from one of my projects without feeling embarrassed to be alive, then I've not done my job. The few reviewers who ever made a point of doing a deep dive into my work fairly wrote of it that it was something akin to low-grade psychological horror. In spite of all these flaws in my style and in the work, and in spite of my ill-tempered ranting, it is still my hope that the reader would eventually find themselves smiling, smirking, chuckling or sighing at, as one of my friendlier critics said, "the humanity of it all."

The Monk: A Romance is a Gothic novel by Matthew Gregory Lewis, published in 1796. A quickly written book from early in Lewis's career (in one letter he claimed to have written it in ten weeks, but other correspondence suggests that he had at least started it, or something similar, a couple of years earlier), it was published before he turned twenty. It is a prime example of the male Gothic that specialises in the aspect of horror. Its convoluted and scandalous plot has made it one of the most important Gothic novels of its time, often imitated and adapted for the stage and the screen. In the same month as the second edition was published, Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote a piece in The Critical Review, an important literary magazine of the day, in which he both praises and harshly criticises the novel. He acknowledges that it is "the offspring of no common genius," that the "underplot... is skilfully and closely connected with the main story, and is subservient to its development," that the story Lewis weaves in about the bleeding nun is "truly terrific" and that he cannot recall a "bolder or more happy conception than that of the burning cross on the forehead of the wandering Jew." Coleridge gives his highest praise to the character of Matilda, who he believes is "the author's master-piece. It is, indeed, exquisitely imagined, and as exquisitely supported. The whole work is distinguished by the variety and impressiveness of its incidents; and the author everywhere discovers an imagination rich, powerful, and fervid. Such are the excellencies". Coleridge continues by saying that "the errors and defects are more numerous, and (we are sorry to add) of greater importance." Because "the order of nature may be changed whenever the author's purposes demand it" there are no surprises in the work. Moral truth cannot be gleaned because Ambrosio was destroyed by spiritual beings, and no earthly being can sufficiently oppose the "power and cunning of supernatural beings." Scenes of grotesquery and horror abound, which are a proof of "a low and vulgar taste." The character of Ambrosio is "impossible... contrary to nature." Coleridge argues that the most "grievous fault... for which no literary excellence can atone" is that "our author has contrived to make [tales of enchantments and witchcraft] ' 'pernicious' ', by blending, with an irreverent negligence, all that is most awfully true in religion with all that is most ridiculously absurd in superstition," commenting with the immortal line that "the Monk is a romance, which if a parent saw in the hands of a son or daughter, he might reasonably turn pale." Coleridge finishes the piece by explaining that he was "induced to pay particular attention to this work, from the unusual success which it has experienced" and that "the author is a man of rank and fortune. Yes! the author of the Monk signs himself a LEGISLATOR! We stare and tremble." Thomas James Mathias followed Coleridge's lead in The Pursuits of Literature, a poem in the 18th-Century satiric tradition, but takes a step farther than Coleridge by claiming that a specific passage made the novel indictable under law. The passage, found in Chapter Seven Volume II, discusses an interpretation of the Bible as too lewd for youth to read. These two major pieces led the way for a multitude of other attacks on the novel, from such sources as the Monthly Review, the Monthly Magazine, and the Scots Magazine; the last of these attacked the novel six years after its publication.
