John Wiley & Sons Alienation and Acceleration A1076618896
Modern life is speeding up, constantly. While the art of saving time reaches unprecedented heights through the introduction of ever-new technologies of communication and production, it nevertheless feels as though we are running out of time. In all Western societies, time scarcity is increasing and individuals report the impression of having to run faster and faster every year - not in order to get somewhere, but just to stay where they are. In this short book Hartmut Rosa outlines his theory of social acceleration and uses it to analyze the causes and consequences of the temporal processes that characterize modern societies. He shows that modern temporal structures are governed by the logic of an acceleration process that defines the essence of modernity. He also develops a critical theory of social acceleration, arguing that acceleration leads to severe forms of alienation from time and space, from things and actions and from self and others, thus constituting a key obstacle to the realization of a 'good life' in late-modern society.

VDM Marulanda, J: Current Transport Modeling of Carbon Nanotubes A1006957646
The purpose of this book is to develop a complete current transport model for carbon nanotube field effect transistors (CNT-FETs), applicable in the analysis and design of integrated circuits. The model is derived by investigating the electronic structure of carbon nanotubes and by using the basic laws of electrostatics in a field effect transistor. By describing the carrier concentration and charge distribution in carbon nanotubes, analytical expressions for the carbon nanotube potential are derived and used to obtain current transport equations for a CNT-FET. Threshold and saturation voltages expressions are each derived in the process and I-V characteristics for CNT-FETs are calculated using different combinations of chiral vectors. The voltage transfer characteristics of basic logic circuits based on complementary CNT-FETs are also studied. A small-signal radio frequency (rf) model is developed and it is shown to have cut-off frequencies in the upper GHz range. Finally, due to the rapid growth of carbon nanotubes as bio- and chemical sensing devices, possible methods to interpret and analyze CNT-FETs when utilized as biosensors are also presented.

Epubli Hydraulic Pedagogy: Engineering Curricula Based on Ancient Water Paradigms A1079081791
Modern civil engineering curricula almost exclusively trace their roots through Roman aqueducts and European industrialization. This Eurocentric approach leaves a massive pedagogical blind spot regarding the sustainable, low-impact hydraulic technologies developed by indigenous societies across the Americas. Ignoring these systems deprives students of highly adaptable, gravity-driven design paradigms. Integrating the mechanics of Andean puquios or Mayan raised fields into modern university classrooms offers a radical shift in problem-solving. These ancient systems relied on capillary action, thermal mass, and atmospheric pressure rather than heavy machinery and fossil fuels. By teaching students to analyze the structural logic of a Zapotec ceramic siphon or Hohokam silt management, educators can foster a generation of engineers capable of designing infrastructure that works symbiotically with local ecology. Revolutionize the engineering classroom. Discover the pedagogical value of analyzing pre-Columbian fluid dynamics to inspire sustainable, off-grid infrastructure solutions for the modern world.

博峰文化/ewaybook No Deadlock in the World —— Practical Wisdom in "Strategies of the Warring States" A1074646429
"No Deadlock in the World —— Practical Wisdom in "Strategies of the Warring States"" is a high-level summary and extension of the traditional wisdom and strategies in the ancient book "Strategies of the Warring States". As a unique historical book that records the political strategies, situation analysis, negotiation methods, and thinking logic of the strategists in the Warring States Period, the practical wisdom shown in "Strategies of the Warring States" can still give us a lot of inspiration after thousands of years, and it is also worthy of reference and development by modern people. Not only does it vividly reproduce the "brilliant moments" of the strategists in the Strategies of the Warring States, but it also analyzes and interprets the brilliant wisdom contained in it in combination with the current reality, so that readers can master the ability to apply traditional wisdom to solve current problems. Although the book "No Game in the World - Practical Wisdom in the Strategies of the Warring States" talks about a lot of wisdom about strategies and struggles, its underlying logic is to spread the "harmony of the way" of breaking the situation with strategies and seeking peace with struggles. Therefore, the ultimate goal of this book is to guide readers to master the bridging of differences, eliminate unnecessary struggles, and ultimately achieve a win-win situation in life. Its deep intention and correct intention are worth readers' in-depth consideration.

Princeton Univers. Press Efficiently Inefficient A1053996300
Efficiently Inefficient describes the key trading strategies used by hedge funds and demystifies the secret world of active investing. Leading financial economist Lasse Heje Pedersen combines the latest research with real-world examples and interviews with top hedge fund managers to show how certain trading strategies make money--and why they sometimes don't. Pedersen views markets as neither perfectly efficient nor completely inefficient. Rather, they are inefficient enough that money managers can be compensated for their costs through the profits of their trading strategies and efficient enough that the profits after costs do not encourage additional active investing. Understanding how to trade in this efficiently inefficient market provides a new, engaging way to learn finance. Pedersen analyzes how the market price of stocks and bonds can differ from the model price, leading to new perspectives on the relationship between trading results and finance theory. He explores several different areas in depth--fundamental tools for investment management, equity strategies, macro strategies, and arbitrage strategies--and he looks at such diverse topics as portfolio choice, risk management, equity valuation, and yield curve logic. The book's strategies are illuminated further by interviews with leading hedge fund managers: Lee Ainslie, Cliff Asness, Jim Chanos, Ken Griffin, David Harding, John Paulson, Myron Scholes, and George Soros.

Dissertation.Com Modality in English and Chinese A1028180316
Modality is a grammatical, or semantic-grammatical, category. It is an important component of human languages. This is at least the case in most European languages. To what extent is it a near-universal? This thesis is to contribute to the question. It focuses on modal verbs in English and Chinese, two genetically and geographically unrelated languages, and analyzes what these two languages have in common and how they differ in their systems of modality. To achieve the aim, the thesis adopts the theoretical framework proposed by van der Auwera (1996, 1998 with Plungian, 2001) for the typological study of modality. Its language-specific descriptions involve the morphosyntactic features, notional functions, modal logic, and diachronic development. With these descriptions, it constructs a cross-linguistic database in a uniform, parallel structure. Then on the basis of this database, it deals with the cross-linguistic issues about modality in English and Chinese. Like many of the studies in this area, this research makes use of the well-sampled data in the relevant literature, thereby assuring the same degree of representativeness. When the data do not meet this need, it resorts to computer-based corpora. In the diachronic study of Chinese modality, quantitative analysis is adopted in proposing a development path for the senses of a modal. English translation is given particular attention in the description of Chinese modality and cross-linguistic analyses. One can only know one's own language only if one compares it with other languages. The present study is conducive to a better understanding of English and Chinese. It contributes not only to the investigation of language universals, but also to the study of human cognition and other linguistic or applied linguistic issues.

Jovis Die Abrissfrage A1077412270
In response to the current climate, biodiversity, and energy crises, critiques of current demolition practices have become more vocal. In Germany, an estimated 50,000 buildings are torn down annually. Die Abrissfrage (The Demolition Question) sheds light on the phenomenon of demolition in the building sector from various perspectives. Approaches drawn from the fields of architectural history and theory, historic preservation, feminism, activism, and art are employed in order to analyze the ecological, political, socioeconomic, and cultural consequences of practices of demolition and rebuilding that remain grounded in the logic of modernism. The contributions investigate the historical development of demolition practices, along with the ideological influences that shape them, the current network of protagonists, and related gentrification processes, but also the anti-demolition movement that began to form in the 1960s. This volume appears in the framework of a new publication series that addresses current questions related to environmental and socially responsible building. Considered as well are major twentieth-century pioneers of ecological building. The editors of the series are Philipp Oswalt and Alexander Stumm. With contributions by ANA, Elisabeth Broermann, Laura Calbet, Dina Dorothea Falbe, Maximilian Hartinger, Maria Hudl, Katrine Majlund Jensen, Adrian Nägel, Yulia Ostheimer, Luise Rellensmann, Tim Rieniets, Martha Seeger, Lukas Strasser and Alexander Stumm, as well as the architecture collectives AbbrechenAbbrechen (Munich), Abrisskollektiv (Hannover), Initiative Perspektive Europaviertel (Freiburg), and ufoufo (Berlin) Examines the current state of debates concerning demolition, along with arguments and statistics Wide-ranging research and documentation on recently demolished or currently threatened buildings Highlights the history and networking of the anti-demolition movement in Germany beginning in the 1960s

An expert explains how the conventional wisdom about decision making can get us into trouble—and why experience can’t be replaced by rules, procedures, or analytical methods In making decisions, when should we go with our gut and when should we try to analyze every option? When should we use our intuition and when should we rely on logic and statistics? Most of us would probably agree that for important decisions, we should follow certain guidelines—gather as much information as possible, compare the options, pin down the goals before getting started. But in practice we make some of our best decisions by adapting to circumstances rather than blindly following procedures. In Streetlights and Shadows, Gary Klein debunks the conventional wisdom about how to make decisions. He takes ten commonly accepted claims about decision making and shows that they are better suited for the laboratory than for life. The standard advice works well when everything is clear, but the tough decisions involve shadowy conditions of complexity and ambiguity. Gathering masses of information, for example, works if the information is accurate and complete—but that doesn't often happen in the real world. (Think about the careful risk calculations that led to the downfall of the Wall Street investment houses.) Klein offers more realistic ideas about how to make decisions in real-life settings. He provides many examples—ranging from airline pilots and weather forecasters to sports announcers and Captain Jack Aubrey in Patrick O’Brian’s Master and Commander novels—to make his point. All these decision makers saw things that others didn’t. They used their expertise to pick up cues and to discern patterns and trends. We can make better decisions, Klein tells us, if we are prepared for complexity and ambiguity and if we will stop expecting the data to tell us everything. “I know of no one who combines theory and observation—intellectual rigor and painstaking observation of the real world—so brilliantly and gracefully as Gary Klein.” —Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers and Blink

GRIN The Double motif in literature using the example of Stevenson's "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" A1009554805
Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,3, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Psychological Approaches to British Fiction, language: English, abstract: Since the early beginning of literature the double motif has served in its different models to trace the features of the ego, individuality and perception. The double plays an important role in literature: it portays confusion and transformation, reflects inner desires and spreads anxiety. But the phenomenon is not just an invention of literature. Again and again people claim to see oneself like some famous persons such as Catharine the Great and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This term paper will analyze the Double-motif in Robert Louis Stevenson¿s novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with regard to psychoanalysis. While citing secondary literature it became obvious that a good portion of these examinations use psychological criteria which offer a wider range of insight into the oddly logic of Stevenson¿s text which he to no purpose named The Strange Case. Three texts from Freud lend themselves to work with the novel: ¿Die ¿kulturelle¿ Sexualmoral und die moderne Nervosität¿ (1908), ¿Das Unheimliche¿ (1919) and ¿Das Unbehagen in der Kultur¿ (1930). In ¿Das Unheimliche¿ Freud deals with the background of the double motif. He interprets the phenomenon from its probable beginning in mythology till the masterly usage of it in E.T.A Hoffmann¿s ¿Sandman¿. In section two of this term paper I will give an overview of the double motif in literature. For this, I will explain the development of the term and its psychological implications. The third section will constitute the main part of the paper: I will first discuss two moments which can be interpreted with the help of psychology and then I will try to apply Freud¿s theorems to the primary source which is full of repressed drives and desires.

Meiner, F Hegel-Studien Band 48 A1078062527
Abstracts Pirmin Stekeler-Weithofer: Autonome Vernunft und Normbefolgung des Verstandes Wie Hegel eine Unterscheidung Kants präzisiert H.s central criticism of Kant's philosophy urges us to separate the level of understanding or rationality ("Verstand") from the level of (speculative) reason ("Vernunft"). The first is a faculty to follow explicit rules properly and to comply with implicitly given norms, the second is active autonomy in developing the rules and norms. This claim might be astounding since Kant himself seems to have stressed the distinction. But it was H. who has drawn the necessary consequences, for example that it is logically impossible to determine laws autonomously for oneself because we need a frame of a we-group or community and a communal practice or institution for the very possibility of having well-determined rules at all. The conceptual relation between norms of proper conduct and forms of cooperation shows up paradigmatically in the fact that I can sing in a choir correctly only together with others. Moreover, only after I can show that I can participate and judge the fulfilment of the norms, my proposals to change such forms of action and practices will count in a community. This holds as well for any attempt to make rules explicit by articulating implicit norms that already govern our (cooperative) actions implicitly – which is a prerequisite for conscious changes of general laws that presuppose at least some forms of comments on pregiven norms. All this holds for the dimensions of the (epistemic) True in diverse areas of judgements and inference as well as for dimensions of the (legal or moral) Good, in evaluating actions or for (aesthetic) Beauty and the corresponding attitudes and reactions. Georg Sans Sj: Weisen der Welterschliessung Zur Rolle des Chemismus in Hegels subjektiver Logik The second section of H.s Subjective Logic deals with the "objectivity" of the concept. It is explained through the categories of mechanism, chemism, and teleology. For H., in contrast to Kant, the alternative between mechanism and teleology is incomplete. As the case of chemism shows, it is not necessary to suppose internal finality in order to conceive of objects which determine themselves according to their concepts. After highlighting the distinction between physical bodies and chemical substances, I discuss H.s claim that chemical processes can be represented in inferential form, namely as a circle of three syllogisms. The syllogistic presentation provides evidence of the conceptual structure behind the chemical phenomena, as exemplified in particular by elective affinities. H.s treatment of chemism, however, is not limited to the realm of chemistry but concerns also spiritual relations like friendship and love. These fields of application prove chemism to be a third way, besides mechanism and teleology, of understanding objective wholes. Nadine Mooren/Tim Roje K: Hegels Begriff der "Wissenschaft" H.s view of the relation between philosophical and non-philosophical sciences has been neglected in debates that concentrate on the relation of common sense and philosophy. Based on this diagnosis the article aims to explicate H.s understanding of non-philosophical sciences as well as their relation to his speculative philosophy. In addition, the article demonstrates that in H.s view philosophy and non-philosophical sciences are not competing or in conflict with each other. Rather, he conceives of them as compatible. After specifying the scope of our research (1.) and presenting a systematic overview of relevant forms of Weltbezug in H. (2.), we analyze four central relations between speculative philosophy and non-philosophical sciences through a close-reading (3.). The final section sketches the systematic implications of our reading (4.).
