Der Multiinstrumentalist Jimmy LaValle hat The Album Leaf 1999 im kalifornischen San Diego gegründet. Seine Musik war schon immer durch wandelnde, epische und Detail-verliebte Klangwelten zwischen Indie Rock, Electronica und Ambient geprägt. LaValles Einflüsse und Inspirationen reichen von Krautrock, über Brian Eno bis hin zu traditionellen Mariachi-Bands, und seine Alben haben nie Angst davor gehabt, Genre-Grenzen zu überschreiten. Der Gründer und Kopf der Band hat dafür einen vollkommen neuen Ansatz gewählt, was der LP eine ganz eigene Dynamik verleiht: "Between Waves" ist nicht nur das erste Album von The Album Leaf, das in der aktuellen Konstellation entstanden ist, denn es ist zugleich auch das erste Album, bei dem sämtlichen Mitgliedern eine zentrale Rolle im kreativen Prozess zukam.
