Penguin Books Ltd The Bone Door A1074078203
STEP INTO THE BRILLIANTLY IMAGINATIVE AND FIERCELY BOLD NEW WORLD FROM VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED AUTHOR, FRANCES WHITE. 🐇 ' I was fascinated and utterly gripped by Frances' storytelling' Costanza Casati, bestselling author of Clytemnestra ' 🐇 'The Bone Door is an epic horror-fable that smiles as it puts a blade in your heart.' - Hannah Kraner, Sunday Times bestselling author of Godkiller -- What lies beyond The Bone Door? When Hop awakens in an ancient labyrinth, he has no memory of his life before, or how he got here. He does not recognise the mysterious girl trapped with him. And he certainly cannot identify the shadowy figure stalking him, whispering terrible things . . . But there is one thing he is certain of. He must escape. The only way out of the labyrinth is through The Bone Door. But it lies behind a series of other locked doors hidden across an array of strange realms. To open the way, Hop must complete impossible tasks before his time runs out. As Hop travels deeper, he discovers that he and his companions may be more connected to the place and its horrors than he could ever imagine. Unless Hop is able to unravel the true mystery of the labyrinth, including his own role within it, the Bone Door and any hope of escape will be lost forever. -- PRAISE FOR THE BONE DOOR 'The Bone Door is epic, ambitious, and outrageously creative, with all the loveable characters, layered worldbuilding and vivid imagery that make White such a force to be reckoned with' - Keshe Chow, Sunday Times Bestselling Author of The Girl With No Reflection. 'Frances White is a masterful storyteller. The Bone Door is a feat of impressive imagination: brutal and beautiful, the very best and worst elements of humanity captured on the page, with a host of characters that will burrow into your heart. I laughed and wept in equal measure, this is a story unlike any other.' - A. S. Webb, Sunday Times bestselling author of Daughter of Chaos 'The Bone Door is a compelling, mind-bending adventure with as many twists and turns as the labyrinth it's set in. Samotin, author of The Sins On Their Bones 'The Bone Door is a unique, emotional read that tackles trauma, empathy, human cruelty, and grief, but that also makes you laugh and appreciate the beauty of love and of being alive. Don't miss it!' - Emma Sterner-Radley, author of Snowblooded 'The Bone Door is a triumph! A twisty, brutal fairy tale that both moved and amazed me. Penguin Books Ltd We Are Not Machines A1076979034
'Sarah is one of the few people who really understands how AI is changing the character of work already and what it means for all of us' David Runciman 'Original and enlightening... Not many books about the labour market make you laugh and bring tears to your eyes' Emma Duncan, The Times From award-winning Financial Times journalist Sarah O'Connor, a deeply reported investigation into how AI is transforming our working lives in unpredictable ways A tsunami of change, we are told, is sweeping the economy, as robots and AI threaten to take over tasks done by humans. But while we worry that we're robotizing our work, what if the bigger risk is that we're robotizing ourselves? When prize-winning Financial Times journalist Sarah O'Connor set out to investigate what was happening on the ground, she met people who weren't necessarily losing their jobs to machines, but who felt they were losing something, nonetheless. Because the quantity of work is not the only thing at stake in times of rapid technological change. So is its quality. From TV subtitle translators reduced to editing AI output to warehouse workers surrounded by robots and graduates interviewed by machines, O'Connor found stories of work becoming more intense, more lonely, less creative, less human. But she also investigated hopeful instances of work being made better, safer and more enjoyable - stories in which people have been able to make the machines work for them, rather than the other way around. Her reporting shows that the way our tools change our work - and ourselves - is shaped by power, design, culture, institutions and ideas. As a result, the outcome is not pre-determined but must be contested by us all. Inspired by stories from nineteenth-century English cotton mills to twenty-first century Swedish mines, We Are Not Machines reveals how we can fight for work which is more respectful of our limits, and more worthy of our minds.

Raven Books The White North Has Thy Bones A1078815029
Sarah Waters meets The Terror in this twisty, chilling historical polar gothic for fans of Michelle Paver and Emma Stonex. 'True Gothic: twisty, unreliable, and full of forbidden joys ... a brilliantly queer, brilliantly playful successor to The Terror' NATASHA PULLEY, bestselling author of THE WATCHMAKER OF FILIGREE STREET Eight years ago, HMS Melpomene met disaster on her search for the missing Franklin polar expedition. A tiny handful of survivors returned home against all odds; now, one of them is to be hanged for a murder he claims no memory of committing. Among the spectators is ambitious London newsman, Harry Lambert, obsessed by the Melpomene story and the question of what could drive a hero of the Arctic to such an end. His search for answers takes him to the door of Sidney Blakely, the survivors' charismatic leader turned Spiritualist medium – a power granted to him, he says, in the thin-veiled North. Living with him is Lieutenant Taylor who claims a darker 'gift': to be a vessel for possession by spirits of the dead. Harry doesn't believe a word of it. But as the true, bloody story behind Melpomene's end unfolds, he begins to wonder. Blakely's revelations of desperate mutiny and a hierarchy out of its depth are shocking enough. But between these lines are whispers of unquiet ghosts, and more than ordinarily savage beasts. In the gaps between what is said and unsaid, what can be believed is as shifting and unstable as the ice itself. Harry knows what Melpomene's crew left in the Arctic. But what did they bring back? 'Chilling, thrilling and so very clever, Ravenscroft brings the past to life with a shock of ice and a reveal you'll never forget' AJ WEST, bestselling author of THE BETRAYAL OF THOMAS TRUE 'The Arctic horror of my dreams ... While I was reading it, I was making a list of all the people I wanted to send it to, until I realized that I wanted to send it to everyone I know." Ann Patchett The internationally bestselling sensation, a compulsively readable novelspiky, sharp, intriguingly dark, and tenderthat Emma Straub has named one of her favorite books of the year Martha Friel just turned forty. Once, she worked at Vogue and planned to write a novel. Now, she creates internet content. She used to live in a pied-à-terre in Paris. Now she lives in a gated community in Oxford, the only person she knows without a PhD, a baby or both, in a house she hates but cannot bear to leave. But she must leave, now that her husband Patrickthe kind who cooks, throws her birthday parties, who loves her and has only ever wanted her to be happyhas just moved out. Because there's something wrong with Martha, and has been for a long time. When she was seventeen, a little bomb went off in her brain and she was never the same. But countless doctors, endless therapy, every kind of drug later, she still doesn't know what's wrong, why she spends days unable to get out of bed or alienates both strangers and her loved ones with casually cruel remarks. And she has nowhere to go except her childhood home: a bohemian (dilapidated) townhouse in a romantic (rundown) part of Londonto live with her mother, a minorly important sculptor (and major drinker) and her father, a famous poet (though unpublished) and try to survive without the devoted, potty-mouthed sister who made all the chaos bearable back then, and is now too busy or too fed up to deal with her. But maybe, by starting over, Martha will get to write a better ending for herselfand she'll find out that she's not quite finished after all.

Little, Brown Book Group Why Did You Stay?: The instant Sunday Times bestseller A1062831526
'Fierce. Game-changing. Urgently necessary. Brilliant, brilliant and did I say brilliant?' EMMA THOMPSON 'Is it worth the hype? Absolutely' LAURA PULLMAN, STYLE ------- "The best day of your life hasn't happened yet, and you haven't met everyone that will love you." Actor, writer and hopeless romantic Rebecca Humphries had often been called crazy by her boyfriend. But when paparazzi caught him kissing his Strictly Come Dancing partner, she realised the only crazy thing was believing she didn't deserve more. A flood of support poured in on social media, but amongst the well-wishes was a simple question with an infinitely complex answer: 'If he was so bad, why did you stay?' Empowering, unflinching and full of humour, this book takes that question and owns it. Using her relationship history and experiences since the scandal during Strictly, Rebecca explores why good girls are drawn to darkness, whether pop culture glamourises toxicity, when a relationship 'rough patch' becomes the start of a destructive cycle, if women are conditioned for co-dependency, and - ultimately - how to reframe disaster into something magical. ------- 'Pacy, vivid, compelling and very, VERY funny... it will help so many' MARIAN KEYES 'A fucking classic. Required reading for all women and men' BRYONY GORDON 'A funny, brave and honest book that will change lives. I have not stopped talking about it' THE TIMES 'So funny and heart-breaking. So stunningly written. ' SUSAN WOKOMA 'A magical, magical book' GLAMOUR 'So thoughtful and moving and funny and sad and great, I love it so, so much. I resented having to put it down' DAISY BUCHANAN 'Her thought-provoking story should be required reading for anyone in a relationship' DAILY MIRROR 'This book isn't an ice-cold revenge opus; it's a diary of self-discovery, a celebration of friendship, resilience and finding one's self-worth...is it worth the hype? A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Goodreads Choice Award Winner in History & Biography One of Time's 100 Must-Read Books of 2024 "A spirited defense of this important, odd and odds-defying American retail category." -The New York Times "It is a delight to wander through the bookstores of American history in this warm, generous book." -Emma Straub, New York Times bestselling author and owner of Books Are Magic An affectionate and engaging history of the American bookstore and its central place in American cultural life, from department stores to indies, from highbrow dealers trading in first editions to sidewalk vendors, and from chains to special-interest community destinations Bookstores have always been unlike any other kind of store, shaping readers and writers, and influencing our tastes, thoughts, and politics. They nurture local communities while creating new ones of their own. Bookshops are powerful spaces, but they are also endangered ones. In The Bookshop, we see the stakes: what has been, and what might be lost. Evan Friss's history of the bookshop draws on oral histories, archival collections, municipal records, diaries, letters, and interviews with leading booksellers to offer a fascinating look at this institution beloved by so many. The story begins with Benjamin Franklin's first bookstore in Philadelphia and takes us to a range of booksellers including the Strand, Chicago's Marshall Field & Company, the Gotham Book Mart, specialty stores like Oscar Wilde and Drum and Spear, sidewalk sellers of used books, Barnes & Noble, Amazon Books, and Parnassus. The Bookshop is also a history of the leading figures in American bookselling, often impassioned eccentrics, and a history of how books have been marketed and sold over the course of more than two centuries-including, for example, a 3,000-pound elephant who signed books at Marshall Field's in 1944. The Bookshop is a love letter to bookstores, a charming chronicle for anyone who cherishes these sanctuaries of literature, and essential reading to understand how these vital institutions have shaped American life-and why we still need them.

While I was reading it, I was making a list of all the people I wanted to send it to, until I realized that I wanted to send it to everyone I know." — Ann Patchett The internationally bestselling sensation, a compulsively readable novel—spiky; sharp, intriguingly dark, and tender—that Emma Straub has named one of her favorite books of the year Martha Friel just turned forty. Once, she worked at Vogue and planned to write a novel. Now, she creates internet content. She used to live in a pied-à-terre in Paris. Now she lives in a gated community in Oxford, the only person she knows without a PhD, a baby or both, in a house she hates but cannot bear to leave. But she must leave, now that her husband Patrick—the kind who cooks, throws her birthday parties, who loves her and has only ever wanted her to be happy—has just moved out. Because there’s something wrong with Martha, and has been for a long time. When she was seventeen, a little bomb went off in her brain and she was never the same. But countless doctors, endless therapy, every kind of drug later, she still doesn’t know what’s wrong, why she spends days unable to get out of bed or alienates both strangers and her loved ones with casually cruel remarks. And she has nowhere to go except her childhood home: a bohemian (dilapidated) townhouse in a romantic (rundown) part of London—to live with her mother, a minorly important sculptor (and major drinker) and her father, a famous poet (though unpublished) and try to survive without the devoted, potty-mouthed sister who made all the chaos bearable back then, and is now too busy or too fed up to deal with her. But maybe, by starting over, Martha will get to write a better ending for herself—and she’ll find out that she’s not quite finished after all.

Samaira Book Publishers Sense and Sensibility A1045130801
This is a story of the English moneyed class and its eternal struggle for creating "sense and sensibility" in its world. A potential marriage prospect must make "sense" by bringing with it enough assets and income to permit the couple to continue to live in happy, idle leisure, complete with servants and a prestigious address. Provided one can find such a match among the eligible persons of the opposite sex, one then hopes for "sensibility", or capacity for emotion, so that if love is not immediately to hand, it might come around later. And while these gentlemen and ladies make their hopeful pirouettes in the social eye, they must of course adhere to all the forms of civility. Jane Austen writes of the family of a gentleman named Dashwood who dies and leaves most of his fortune to his son, with the understanding that he will "look out for" his mother and three sisters. When that son marries a grasping woman who convinces him that his sisters' funds are suitable to their needs and so require no contributions from his inherited fortune, the sisters are left to play the game of "Sense and Sensibility" in earnest. But all's not fair in love. Carefully prepared "attachments" can and do go awry when gentlemen find other young women of greater fortunes than the Dashwood sisters. So, will they marry for love? Or money? Or perhaps, not at all? The Dashwood sisters are very different from each other in appearance and temperament; Elinor's good sense and readiness to observe social forms contrast with Marianne's impulsive candor and warm but excessive sensibility. Both struggle to maintain their integrity and find happiness in the face of a competitive marriage market. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jane Austen was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature, her realism and biting social commentary cementing her historical importance among scholars and critics. Austen lived her entire life as part of a close-knit family located on the lower fringes of the English landed gentry. She was educated primarily by her father and older brothers as well as through her own reading. The steadfast support of her family was critical to her development as a professional writer. Her artistic apprenticeship lasted from her teenage years until she was about 35 years old. During this period, she experimented with various literary forms, including the epistolary novel which she tried then abandoned, and wrote and extensively revised three major novels and began a fourth. From 1811 until 1816, with the release of 'Sense and Sensibility' (1811), 'Pride and Prejudice' (1813), 'Mansfield Park' (1814) and 'Emma' (1815), she achieved success as a published writer. She wrote two additional novels, 'Northanger Abbey' and 'Persuasion', both published posthumously in 1818, and began a third, which was eventually titled 'Sanditon', but died before completing it. Austen's works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century realism. Her plots, though fundamentally comic, highlight the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security. Her work brought her little personal fame and only a few positive reviews during her lifetime, but the publication in 1869 of her nephew's 'A Memoir of Jane Austen' introduced her to a wider public, and by the 1940s she had become widely accepted in academia as a great English writer. The second half of the 20th century saw a proliferation of Austen scholarship and the emergence of a Janeite fan culture.

Samaira Book Publishers Mansfield Park A1045135264
Aged ten, Fanny Price is sent to live with her wealthier relations, the Bertrams, at Mansfield Park. However, life there is not as she imagined. Treated with disdain by three of her cousins, she finds her only comfort in the kindness of the fourth, Edmund. As they grow, their friendship develops into romantic love-until the arrival of Henry Crawford and his charming sister Mary causes an emotional upheaval that no one in the family expects. With psychological insight and sparkling wit, Jane Austen paints an irresistibly lifelike portrait of shifting values and split loyalties. Described as the most experimental and modern of Jane Austen's works, 'Mansfield Park' is also Austen's most serious novel, written in the full flower of the novelist's maturity. Enlivened by an amusing cast of busybodies, ne'er-do-wells, and social climbers, this acclaimed novel of early 19th Century English society will also appeal to readers as an entertaining study of the interplay between manners, education, and ethics. Oxford University Press Gotham A1031981812
To European explorers, it was Eden, a paradise of waist-high grasses, towering stands of walnut, maple, chestnut, and oak, and forests that teemed with bears, wolves, raccoons, beavers, otters, and foxes. Today, it is the site of Broadway and Wall Street, the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty, and the home of millions of people, who have come from every corner of the nation and the globe. In Gotham, Edwin G. Burrows and Mike Wallace have produced a monumental work of history, one that ranges from the Indian tribes that settled in and around the island of Manna-hata, to the consolidation of the five boroughs into Greater New York in 1898. It is an epic narrative, a story as vast and as varied as the city it chronicles, and it underscores that the history of New York is the story of our nation. Readers will relive the tumultuous early years of New Amsterdam under the Dutch West India Company, Peter Stuyvesant's despotic regime, Indian wars, slave resistance and revolt, the Revolutionary War and the defeat of Washington's army on Brooklyn Heights, the destructive seven years of British occupation, New York as the nation's first capital, the duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, the Erie Canal and the coming of the railroads, the growth of the city as a port and financial center, the infamous draft riots of the Civil War, the great flood of immigrants, the rise of mass entertainment such as vaudeville and Coney Island, the building of the Brooklyn Bridge and the birth of the skyscraper. Here too is a cast of thousands--the rebel Jacob Leisler and the reformer Joanna Bethune; Clement Moore, who saved Greenwich Village from the city's street-grid plan; Herman Melville, who painted disillusioned portraits of city life; and Walt Whitman, who happily celebrated that same life. We meet the rebel Jacob Leisler and the reformer Joanna Bethune; Boss Tweed and his nemesis, cartoonist Thomas Nast; Emma Goldman and Nellie Bly; Jacob Riis and Horace Greeley; police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt; Colonel Waring and his "white angels" (who revolutionized the sanitation department); millionaires John Jacob Astor, Cornelius Vanderbilt, August Belmont, and William Randolph Hearst; and hundreds more who left their mark on this great city. The events and people who crowd these pages guarantee that this is no mere local history. It is in fact a portrait of the heart and soul of America, and a book that will mesmerize everyone interested in the peaks and valleys of American life as found in the greatest city on earth. Gotham is a dazzling read, a fast-paced, brilliant narrative that carries the reader along as it threads hundreds of stories into one great blockbuster of a book.

Everyone should read this book." Catherine Gray, author of The Unexpected Joy series ----- Why do some of us change for the better while others seem to get stuck? Behavioural coach Eric Zimmer has been asking himself this question for years and in this, his debut book, he shares how forming healthy habits is not enough - we need to cultivate wise habits to be applied day by day. When Eric found himself homeless, addicted and facing prison in his 20s, he developed a system of small steps that began to lead him towards lasting health. Over time, he has refined these steps into a method that he has shared with thousands of people through his coaching and chart-topping podcast, The One You Feed. How A Little Becomes A Lot brings together Eric's research and experience to offer a framework to help improve the lives of even those among us who feel stuck and cynical about whether change is even possible in the first place.
