Dieses Set mit 15 Ansichten aus Griechenland von Edward Dodwell (1767-1832) zeigt lebendig und farbenfroh die Welt des 19. Jahrhunderts in Hellas und ist ein ideales Geschenk für Philhellenen. Edward Dodwell war einer der Pioniere, die in den Jahren 1801, 1805 und 1806 das damals noch unter osmanischer Herrschaft stehende Griechenland bereisten. In seinem Bildband „Views in Greece” (from Drawings by Edward Dodwell Esq. F.S.A &c., London, Rodwell and Martin, 1819) befasst er sich hauptsächlich mit dem antiken Griechenland, skizziert aber auch das Griechenland in den frühen Anfängen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Auf seinen farbigen Aquatinta, die als Motive für die Postkarten dienten, sind, neben den antiken hellenischen Bauten, auch verschiedene Orte und Szenen aus dem damaligen Alltagsleben zu sehen. Zu den bekanntesten Werken des irischen Schriftstellers und Altertumsforschers Dodwell zählt „Classical and topographical tour through Greece“; erschienen in London 1818, auf Deutsch 1821 („Classische und topographische Reise durch Griechenland während der Jahre 1801, 1805 und 1806“).

Die globale Vernetzung, die sich vor allem durch das World Wide Web entwickelt hat, ist für uns Menschen heute normal. Doch im 19. Jahrhundert war das anders: Nachrichten und Informationen benötigten sehr lange, bis sie beispielsweise die Distanz zwischen zwei Kontinenten überwunden hatten. Das änderte sich erst um 1850 durch die Telegraphie und die Etablierung von Nachrichtenagenturen. Diese nutzten die neue Technologie, um in erster Linie die Zeitungen, aber auch Privatpersonen mit den neuesten Nachrichten zu versorgen. Erstmals war die Nachrichtenübermittlung unabhängig vom Wetter oder von der Geschwindigkeit des Transportmittels bzw. des Trägers der Nachricht, zum Beispiel Bote, Schiff oder Bahn. Wie änderte sich durch diese neue Art des Nachrichtenhandels zwischen Nachrichtenagenturen, Telegraphengesellschaften und Zeitungen die Natur der Nachrichten, das heißt insbesondere ihre Definition und Funktion? Wie global und wie objektiv waren die telegraphischen Nachrichten tatsächlich? Mit der Beantwortung dieser Fragen beschäftigt sich diese Arbeit.

In Bezug auf das Überangebot aus Internet, Zeitung, Fernsehen usw. stellt sich die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von einer Wirklichkeit der Medien zur Realität des Leben. Wie wahr sind die Nachrichten, welche uns als authentisch aufgetischt werden tatsächlich, wie sehr kann man den Bildern trauen? Wer mag eine Fälschung vom Original, der "eigentlichen" Wirklichkeit, tatsächlich unterscheiden? Dem Leser einer Zeitung bzw. dem Zuschauer beim Fernsehen sind hierbei starke Grenzen gesetzt. Es bleibt nicht viel Spielraum, sich im Überangebot der Medien eine eigene Meinung zu bilden und alle Berichte zu hinterfragen. Dadurch entsteht ein Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Glaubwürdigkeit und Zweifel, was man gerade bei den Neuen Medien wie dem Internet immer wieder zu spüren bekommt. Jedoch, auch bei den vertrauten Medien wie Zeitung und Fernsehen kommt zuweilen die Frage auf, mit was für einer Wirklichkeit wir es zu tun haben, und in wie weit wir dieser Vertrauen und Zuversicht schenken dürfen. In vorliegender Arbeit beschäftige ich mich mit dem Verhältnis von Wirklichkeit und Medien wie Zeitung und Fernsehen unter Zuhilfenahme bekannter Theorien. Zu aller erst möchte ich erläutern, wie es zu der Wahrnehmung überhaupt kommt und wie schwer es ist, die Realität abzubilden und welchen Beitrag die Medien zur Erfahrung von Wirklichkeit beitragen. Ganzes möchte ich an Hand des Zeitungs- und Fernsehsystems darstellen, untermauert mit einem Beispiel. Grundsätzlich stelle ich mir die Frage, ob Medien die Realität überhaupt abbilden können und versuche diese Frage im Folgenden zu beantworten.

Teilweise bestehen diese Publikationen bereits seit mehr als 100 Jahren. Trotz der heutigen Möglichkeit, deutsche Zeitungen im Internet zu lesen oder zu abonnieren, werden diese Traditionsblätter immer noch gekauft. Die ursprüngliche Aufgabe der deutschen Auslandszeitungen war es, die Interessen der deutschen Einwanderer in der fremdsprachigen Umwelt zu vertreten sowie innerhalb der Kolonien das Zugehörigkeitsgefühl zum deutschen Volkstum und die Verbindung mit der alten Heimat aufrecht zu erhalten. Diese Aufgaben bestehen heute teilweise immer noch. Dazugekommen sind Zeitungen mit einer speziellen Zielgruppe wie beispielsweise Wirtschaftszeitungen, Minderheitenblätter, Touristenmagazine oder Sprachlernzeitschriften. Somit setzt sich die Leserschaft der deutschen Auslandspresse je nach Land und Historie unterschiedlich zusammen. Sie reicht von Angehörigen deutscher Minderheiten über deutschsprachige Geschäftsleute oder Touristen bis hin zu Sprachschülern im Ausland oder Auslandsstudenten. Die älteste, heute noch existierende deutschsprachige Auslandszeitung ist die 1727 gegründete St. Petersburgische Zeitung. Auf Südamerika bezogen ist es das Argentinische Tagblatt aus Buenos Aires, Argentinien, das 1889 gegründet wurde. Da sich diese Arbeit auf Südamerika konzentriert, soll hierbei auf die Besonderheiten in der Entwicklung der deutschsprachigen Presse auf diesem Kontinent eingegangen werden. Deutsche Siedler ließen sich damals überwiegend in geschlossenen Siedlungen nieder. Dadurch bot sich die Möglichkeit, das Deutschtum nicht nur zu bewahren, sondern auch weiterzuentwickeln. So entstanden vor allem in Paraguay, Brasilien und Argentinien Gebiete mit ¿großen deutschen Landstrichen¿. Somit waren die Rahmenbedingungen für die Gründung von deutschsprachigen Zeitungen ideal. Heute sind die größten und bekanntesten deutschsprachigen Zeitungen aus dieser Region das bereits erwähnte Argentinische Tagblatt aus Buenos Aires, die Brasil Post und die Deutsche Zeitung aus Brasilien, der chilenische Condor aus Santiago de Chile sowie die Aktuelle Rundschau aus Paraguays Hauptstadt Asunción.
