Pen & Sword Books Mirages Over the Falklands A1081152956
Argentine Mirage fighter sorties shaped actions around Port Stanley, targeting ships with bombs and missile cover. On 1 May, Grupo 6 de Caza, flying Dassault Mirages, carried out its first sortie. The section, call sign Fierro, flew in 'India' configuration, carrying Shafrir air-to-air missiles, 30 mm cannon with full ammunition, and three 1,300-litre drop tanks. Capitán Díaz (C-421) and Teniente Aguirre Faget (C-403) were assigned to the mission, but Aguirre Faget was unable to take off due to technical issues, leaving Díaz to depart alone. Twice British fighters were guided by radar from Stanley toward the Mirage, but they were unwilling to engage and Diaz returned unscathed to San Julián at 14.30 hours. At 15.30 hours, an attack on four ships some seventeen kilometres north of Port Stanley was ordered. Flying as Torno, the Mirage strike group - Capitán Dimeglio, Primer Teniente Román, and Teniente Aguirre Faget - carried two 250kg Expal BRP bombs with braking devices, full 30mm ammunition, and three 1,300-litre tanks. At 15.55 hours a pair of Mirage Daggers armed with Shafrir missiles took to the sky to provide top cover. At 16.30 hours, near the islands, the Torno group surprised a British naval force shelling Port Stanley. The group identified two Type 21 frigates - HMS Alacrity and HMS Arrow - and the County-class destroyer HMS Glamorgan. Glamorgan was struck by two bombs on either side of the waterline, causing damage, while the frigates sustained lighter hits. Low on fuel, the Argentines climbed for the return flight, using staggered altitudes to complicate interception. A British Combat Air Patrol approached, but the Sea Harriers were forced to break off. Some accounts later claimed the target was actually the destroyer HMS Sheffield, suggesting the damage inflicted by the Daggers contributed to her sinking days later and that the Exocet missiles fired on 4 May may instead have struck the light carrier HMS Hermes. These claims remain disputed. Mirages Over The Falklands deals in detail every action in which the Mirages were involved in during the Falklands' conflict.

University Of California Press Burn Down Master's House A1075220902
Inspired by true, long-buried stories of enslaved people who dared to fight back, a searing portrayal of resistance for readers of Colson Whitehead, Jesmyn Ward, and Percival Everett, from Clay Cane, award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author of The Grift . INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES & USA TODAY BESTSELLER! As turmoil simmers within a divided nation, smoke from another blaze begins to rise. Sparked by individual acts of resistance among those enslaved across the American South, their seemingly disparate rebellions fuel a singular inferno of justice, connecting them in ways quiet at times, explosive at others. As these flames rise, so will they. Luke, quick-witted and literate, and Henri, a man with a strong and defiant spirit, forge an unbreakable bond at a Virginia plantation called Magnolia Row. Both seek escape from unimaginable cruelty. And sure as the fires of hell, Luke and Henri will leave their mark, sparking resistance among the lives they touch... One is Josephine, a young, sharp, and observant girl who wields silence as her greatest weapon. A witness to Luke and Henri's resilience, she listens, watches, waits for the moment to make her move. Then there is Charity Butler, her husband a formerly enslaved man who proved his ferocity as a young boy standing alongside Josephine. At his encouragement, Charity fights for her freedom in court and wins - only to battle a deeply unjust system designed to destroy the life they've built. And finally, there is Nathaniel, who ruthlessly exploits other Black people and mirrors the cruelty of the white men who, like him, are enslavers. A perversion of the system of slavery, his fragile and contradictory rule will become a catalyst of its own. Inspired by the true stories of the profoundly courageous men and women who dared to fight back, Burn Down Master's House is a singular tour de force of a novel-breathtaking in scope, compassion, and a timeliness that speaks powerfully to our present era.

ADMX Publishing The Three Brains A1081129828
You think you know why you made that decision. You probably don't.In The Three Brains, neuroscientist and clinical psychologist Gregory Bicaj draws on two decades of laboratory research and frontline clinical practice to reveal the hidden architecture of human behavior. His central argument is disarmingly simple: every modern person runs three inherited systems at once — an ancient survival brain, an emotional brain shaped by attachment, and a late-arriving reasoning brain. Most suffering, most foolish decisions, and most self-defeating patterns don't come from weakness or stupidity. They come from the wrong system being in charge at the wrong moment. What makes this book unusual is its refusal to stay theoretical. Chapter by chapter, Bicaj builds a complete map of the forces that drive people without their knowing it: the shadow material we exile from self-awareness and then meet as overheated moral fury in others; the involuntary signals the body broadcasts while the face is still composing its response; the gap between polished personality and actual character that only pressure can reveal; the neuroscience of desire, which shows that the brain is built more for chasing than for having; the mechanics of envy, grandiosity, and fragile ego; the gender masks that amputate entire emotional capacities and leave people mistaking the costume for the self; the tribal brain that converts loyalty into a substitute for thought; the playbook of predatory personalities and how they exploit ordinary human needs for belonging and warmth; the way mortality anxiety quietly fuels status obsession, rigidity, and compulsive self-performance.Each chapter brings laboratory findings and clinical portraits together. Bicaj draws on landmark research — Nisbett and Wilson on the limits of introspection, Ekman on microexpressions, Mischel and the Good Samaritan study on character versus personality, Kahneman and Tversky on systematic cognitive error, Terror Management Theory on how death shapes behavior — while grounding these findings in the kinds of patterns he has seen repeatedly across years of treating patients with anxiety, addiction, and burnout.

Creative Media Partners, LLC A Calendar of Doubts and Faiths A1079376806
"A Calendar of Doubts and Faiths" is a profound exploration of the enduring dialogue between scientific skepticism and spiritual conviction. Written by William Marias Malisoff , a distinguished philosopher of science, this work navigates the complex terrain where empirical inquiry meets the human need for meaning. Organized as an intellectual survey, it examines the evolving nature of belief in an age increasingly defined by materialist perspectives and technical progress. The text delves into the tensions that arise when traditional faiths encounter the rigorous demands of modern logic and the scientific method. Malisoff does not merely chronicle a conflict; he seeks a synthesis that respects both the precision of the scientist and the intuitive quest of the seeker. By analyzing the "doubts" that fuel discovery and the "faiths" that provide ethical grounding, the author offers a nuanced perspective on how humanity might reconcile its rational achievements with its existential aspirations. This volume serves as a significant artifact of early twentieth-century intellectual history, reflecting the era's debates on humanism, secularism, and the limits of knowledge. "A Calendar of Doubts and Faiths" remains a compelling read for those interested in the philosophy of religion and the history of scientific thought, providing a timeless meditation on the dual forces that shape the human spirit. Penguin US Will A1054403801
The instant #1 New York Times bestseller! It's the best memoir I've ever read. Oprah Winfrey Will Smith isn't holding back in his bravely inspiring new memoir . . . An ultimately heartwarming read, Will provides a humane glimpse of the man behind the actor, producer and musician, as he bares all his insecurities and trauma. USA Today Winner of the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Achievement One of the most dynamic and globally recognized entertainment forces of our time opens up fully about his life, in a brave and inspiring book that traces his learning curve to a place where outer success, inner happiness, and human connection are aligned. Along the way, Will tells the story in full of one of the most amazing rides through the worlds of music and film that anyone has ever had. Will Smith s transformation from a West Philadelphia kid to one of the biggest rap stars of his era, and then one of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood history, is an epic tale but it s only half the story. Will Smith thought, with good reason, that he had won at life: not only was his own success unparalleled, his whole family was at the pinnacle of the entertainment world. Only they didn't see it that way: they felt more like star performers in his circus, a seven-days-a-week job they hadn't signed up for. It turned out Will Smith's education wasn't nearly over. This memoir is the product of a profound journey of self-knowledge, a reckoning with all that your will can get you and all that it can leave behind. Written with the help of Mark Manson, author of the multi-million-copy bestseller The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, Will is the story of how one person mastered his own emotions, written in a way that can help everyone else do the same. Few of us will know the pressure of performing on the world's biggest stages for the highest of stakes, but we can all understand that the fuel that works for one stage of our journey might have to be changed if we want to make it all the way home. The combination of genuine wisdom of universal value and a life story that is preposterously entertaining, even astonishing, puts Will the book, like its author, in a category by itself.

Lena Coates Cracking The Confidence Code A1078372833
Have you ever been told to "be more confident" - with zero guidance on how? You're not alone. For decades, capable, brilliant women have been handed this advice like a gift - with no ribbon, no instructions, and no map. Lena Coates was one of them. And after years of stumbling, some truly cringey moments, and hard-won wisdom gathered through life, a headhunting career, and coaching hundreds of women, she finally wrote the book she desperately needed. This Is Not Another Pep Talk. Cracking the Confidence Code is a practical, deeply human field guide for women ready to stop waiting for permission and start taking the floor. Rooted in neuroscience, psychology, and lived experience, it rejects the myth that confidence is a personality trait you either have or you don't - and proves, step by step, that it is a skill you can build, practise, and own. Across ten chapters and four focused confidence-building exercises per chapter, Lena guides you through three powerful stages: understanding and redefining confidence, rebuilding it through resilience and choice, and applying it boldly in your life, career, and relationships. Inside, you will learn how to: → Spot self-doubt before it stops you - and interrupt it with kindness, not force → Use body, breath, and voice to project calm, credibility, and presence → Reframe setbacks and change as fuel for resilience, not evidence of failure → Celebrate your achievements without deflecting, minimising, or moving straight to "what's next" → Ask for what you need - and actually land the ask → Build relationships and networks that lift you, and let go of what quietly drains you → Show up, speak up, and stand strong - even when fear shows up first This Book Is For You If: You've ever hesitated to apply for a role because you didn't tick every box. You've sat in a meeting with something important to say - and stayed silent. You've achieved something meaningful and immediately moved on without pausing to celebrate. You've been told your experience is too much, too old, or no longer relevant. You know, somewhere deep down, that you are more capable than you're currently allowing yourself to be. Why Lena Coates? Lena is a career coach and executive search professional who has spent decades sitting across from extraordinary women who couldn't yet see what she could see in them. She grew up in a traditional Italian household where speaking up wasn't exactly encouraged. She's had the false lashes, the cringey moments, the years of being told to "be more confident" without being handed a single tool to get there. She earned her wisdom the hard way - and then distilled it into this book. She doesn't lecture. She walks alongside you. Three Promises: No reinvention required. This is about becoming more you - on purpose. Small beats grand. Tiny habits, repeated, outperform once-a-year bravery every time. Progress over polish. Stumble. Learn. Adjust. Go again. "Confidence is not an innate thing you have when you are born - it's a practice." - Lena Coates You don't need permission. You need tools. Consider these pages your toolkit.

Pan macmillan Ltd. The Free People's Village A1070843748
USA TODAY BESTSELLER Official IndieNext Selection "Incisive and insightful." —Texas Monthly From environmental journalist and founder of the #TransRightsReadathon Sim Kern, comes the eat-the-rich climate fiction you won't want to put down: In an alternate 2020 timeline, Al Gore won the 2000 election and declared a War on Climate Change rather than a War on Terror. For twenty years, Democrats have controlled all three branches of government, enacting carbon-cutting schemes that never made it to a vote in our world. Green infrastructure projects have transformed U.S. cities into lush paradises (for the wealthy, white neighborhoods, at least), and the Bureau of Carbon Regulation levies carbon taxes on every financial transaction. English teacher by day, Maddie Ryan spends her nights and weekends as the rhythm guitarist of Bunny Bloodlust, a queer punk band living in a warehouse-turned-venue called “The Lab” in Houston’s Eighth Ward. When Maddie learns that the Eighth Ward is to be sacrificed for a new electromagnetic hyperway out to the wealthy, white suburbs, she joins “Save the Eighth;” a Black-led organizing movement fighting for the neighborhood. At first, she’s only focused on keeping her band together and getting closer to Red, their reckless and enigmatic lead guitarist. But working with Save the Eighth forces Maddie to reckon with the harm she has already done to the neighborhood—both as a resident of the gentrifying Lab and as a white teacher in a predominantly Black school. When police respond to Save the Eighth protests with violence, the Lab becomes the epicenter of “The Free People’s Village”—an occupation that promises to be the birthplace of an anti-capitalist revolution. As the movement spreads across the U.S., Maddie dreams of a queer, liberated future with Red. But the Village is beset on all sides—by infighting, police brutality, corporate-owned media, and rising ecofascism. Maddie’s found family is increasingly at risk from state violence, and she must decide if she’s willing to sacrifice everything in pursuit of justice. “Sim Kern’s masterpiece burns with righteous fury. This book doesn’t pull punches — instead of hopelessness, it sliced straight through frustration, fatalism, and ennui and made me want to fight back.” — Shana Hausman , All She Wrote Books “Achingly real, bitterly funny, and deeply moving, The Free People’s Village is a commentary, both compassionate and cutting, on the woke white activist’s journey and, above all, a full-throated ode to resistance and the found family that fuels it.” — Megan Bell , Southern Bookseller Review “The Free People’s Village tackles many social and environmental issues at once without feeling heavy or prescriptive, focusing on personal stories amid the larger ones it tells about capitalism, climate, and activism. Its commentary never comes off as rote or tedious, bolstered by humor and humanity.” — Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya for Autostraddle ""Full of furious kindness, radical community, passionate politics, and authentic friendships, The Free People's Village is a sharply-written paean to hope, set in a vivid, brilliantly imagined future that alternately filled me with loathing and yearning. From the carefully crafted timelines to the intensely real characters, this was a story that yanked me into its world and didn't let me surface for hours. You live because you still can, and you organize because you still can, and you fight because you still can."" — Premee Mohamed , Nebula Award-winning author of And What Can We Offer You Tonight “A thought-provoking, exciting ride. The Free People's Village is a mesmerizing portrait of revolutions — the internal ones that call us to find and fight for the best versions of ourselves; the external that consume, invigorate, and demand as they explore paths to justice. Grounded in an imaginative landscape and rounded out by an inclusive, complex cast, this novel masterfully explores identity, morality, and the choices we make as veh
