And more than that; it is the key skill that is fundamental for first and foreign language acquisition. That is why it should especially for English beginners be the central skill to be taught in the ESL (English as a Second Language) classroom at school. Therefore this paper starts with a theoretical part including first of all, a description of how listening comprehension works to show that it is a very active process. Before the actual listening process, there is always a purpose for listening to the text and an expectation towards the text is developed. This purpose could be taking part in communication or listening for information, fun etc. The listening process itself consists of two parallel processes that contain an interaction between text and listener, the bottom-up process and the top-down process. During the bottom-up process the listener absorbs the text and tries to understand what is said by using their already acquainted phonological, lexical, syntactical and semantic knowledge. The top-down process can be seen as an interpretation of the text, where the listener uses not only their linguistic and cognitive knowledge, but also their pragmatic, social-cultural knowledge and their assessment of the situational context and the speakers. During these processes a number of listening strategies that compensate possibly appearing problems are applied. These problems can be caused by certain features of language that can make understanding difficult and they might be even more serious for the foreign language learner. Furthermore, the importance of listening comprehension in first, second and foreign language acquisition is portrayed. Many parallels between first and foreign language acquisition that can and should be accounted for ELT (English Language Teaching) are shown in this context.

What might be most remarkable about them, however, is the "very lack of remarkability with which they are received" (KELLY-HOLMES 67) by German consumers when they are encountered as parts of magazine advertisements. Along with numerous other examples, these three items were extracted from the acclaimed weekly German news magazine 'Der Spiegel' in order to get a clear picture of which effects English has and which role it plays in German advertisement. This paper will argue that English has an effect on virtually all of the 114 ads examined in the Spiegel issues of 4/11 and 4/18 2005, even on the ones that do not contain any English themselves. Furthermore, it will show that the effect English has on German ads extends beyond the concepts usually related with English, like technology, modernity, or science. This is a finding similar to the one suggested by MARTIN in a study on English influences on French advertisements. In her study, she also stresses that the register of advertisement is a very special one due to its one-way form of communication (MARTIN 376). Since the hearer remains hearer and can never take over the floor, he is not required to have any active knowledge of the language used in ads. This way, language can become a tool and a symbol all by itself, while the content can become secondary - language can turn into a form without meaning. In how far this is true in the case of English in German ads will be a final concern of this paper.

What might be most remarkable about them, however, is the "very lack of remarkability with which they are received" (KELLY-HOLMES 67) by German consumers when they are encountered as parts of magazine advertisements. Along with numerous other examples, these three items were extracted from the acclaimed weekly German news magazine 'Der Spiegel' in order to get a clear picture of which effects English has and which role it plays in German advertisement. This paper will argue that English has an effect on virtually all of the 114 ads examined in the Spiegel issues of 4/11 and 4/18 2005, even on the ones that do not contain any English themselves. Furthermore, it will show that the effect English has on German ads extends beyond the concepts usually related with English, like technology, modernity, or science. This is a finding similar to the one suggested by MARTIN in a study on English influences on French advertisements. In her study, she also stresses that the register of advertisement is a very special one due to its one-way form of communication (MARTIN 376). Since the hearer remains hearer and can never take over the floor, he is not required to have any active knowledge of the language used in ads. This way, language can become a tool and a symbol all by itself, while the content can become secondary - language can turn into a form without meaning. In how far this is true in the case of English in German ads will be a final concern of this paper.

For this reason he can be considered as the epitome of a tragic hero. In the course of the play we notice a great development of Macbeth¿s character. At the beginning he is a man much honoured by his countrymen for his leading and courageous part in defence of his good king and native land. Shaw¿s one that, although he changes the frame and the plot of Pygmalion, he still holds on to the idea of the original story, there is for example Jean-Jacques Rousseaüs melodrama Pygmalion (1770), Johann Wolfgang Goethe¿s poem Pygmalion (1767) and Franz von Suppé¿s operetta Die Schöne Galathee (1865). The mythological background, though, is not the only reason why the story of Pygmalion has attracted that many artists and is that popular. It is the diversity of its themes and actions. There is for example a love story, a criticism of society, many different characters that are interesting in each way, changes in individual personalities and so on. . . . In a way he also forms a woman after his ideas and taste. This point of shaping a woman is present in both, Ovid¿s Metamorphoses and G. B. Shaw¿s Pygmalion. However, the most important difference between them is the woman¿s behaviour. While in mythology Galatea is only a passive character, in Shaw¿s Pygmalion Eliza is active from the beginning on and influences the play¿s stream and action. Furthermore I would like to compare the play Pygmalion, which was staged for the first time in 1913, to the musical My fair lady which was released in 1956. The difference in time promises a difference in the reception of the story and it is probable that the changes in society between 1913 and 1956 are reflected in those two versions.Especially the role of women changed in those years. Therefore the focus of my thesis will be these transforming ideas concerning women in the Victorian age and the 1950¿s by means of Pygmalion and My fair lady.
