La Banda ist eine italienische Institution. Keine, die mit Ämtern oder Behörden zu tun hat, sondern mit den Bewohnern von Dörfern und Kleinstädten und mit Musik. La Banda, dieses organische Konzept italienischer Orchester, die auf Saiteninstrumente völlig verzichten und nur mit Bläsern und Perkussionisten auskommen. Am Ende des 19.Jahrhunderts gab es keine Stadt, kein Dorf, keine Gemeinde, die nicht mindestens eine Banda hatte. In Italien gibt es - nach vorsichtigen Schätzungen - heute immer noch mindestens 5000 dieser Musikformationen. Wer aber bislang dachte, dass der wunderbare Wahnsinn, mit dem Brassbands uns in Hüften, Herz und Hirn fahren, nur vom Balkan oder aus New Orleans kommen kann, der hat noch keine der neuen, wilden italienischen Bandas gehört. Sie haben Ähnlichkeit mit den osteuropäischen Blechblaskapellen und unterscheiden sich doch in einem Punkt entscheidend: Bandas zeigen, dass eine Fanfare auch extrem langsam und gefühlvoll spielen kann und nicht immer nur mit 100% Druckluft. Seit etwa 15 Jahren haben sich junge Musiker aus verschiedenen Regionen Italiens das Konzept der Banda gegriffen, dieses soziale und kreative Miteinander, die Musik jedoch aktualisiert, urbanisiert, globalisiert und den musikalischen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen, sowie den heutigen Lebensbedingungen angepasst. Viele Gruppen zwischen Apulien und der Romagna sind seitdem dabei die Musik ihrer Region nicht nur mit den Stilen zu kreuzen, entlang derer sie aufwuchsen, z.B. Rock, Punk, Jazz, Pop, Soundtracks, sondern auch mit Rhythmen, Melodien, Sprachen und Instrumenten aus anderen Kulturen. Italien ist nicht erst seit viele Migranten vom Balkan oder aus Nordafrika gekommen sind ein multikulturelles Gebilde, sondern auch wegen der vielen verschiedenen regionalen Traditionen. Die neuen Bandas bilden das - der offiziellen Politik trotzend - als gelebte Realität ab. Sie nehmen Zuwanderer in ihre Bands und kreuzen ihre Musik mit der eingewanderten Musik. Eine Banda, das ist im Italienischen aber nicht nur die ortsansässige Blaskapelle, sondern auch eine Gruppe von Banditen. Es ist sicher kein Zufall, dass Musiker, die eher aus der alternativen Szene kommen, mit der Doppeldeutigkeit auch ihr Anderssein ausdrücken. Es ist kein Revival und keine Revolution. Entstanden ist eine wunderbare neue, noch nicht definierte italienische Volksmusik, die sich das Fremde zu eigen macht ohne das Eigene zu verleugnen. Sie ist aufregend und wild, gefühlvoll und dynamisch, intensiv und humorvoll, dramatisch und weltoffen, ganz und gar unnationalistisch und sentimental. Sie neigt zu Übertreibungen, wie der Italiener und die Italienerin sie lieben. Banda Ionica ist in Sizilien beheimatet. Die Gruppen Opa Cupa, BandAdriatica und Municipale Balcanica stammen vom südlichen Zipfel Italiens, aus dem Salento. Banda Olifante kommt aus der Romagna.
