Deutscher Kunstverlag Rudolf Levy
Deutscher Kunstverlag Rudolf Levy
Painter Rudolf Levy (1875-1944) was a central figure in the Munich and Paris avant-gardes, and enjoyed great success with his colourful portraits, landscapes and still lifes in Berlin during the 1920s, including in the legendary Flechtheim Gallery. When the National Socialists seized power, this brought his career to an abrupt end. After an odyssey of flight, Levy was able to settle in Florence, where his work reached a final impressive climax before his deportation and murder in Auschwitz concentration camp. The Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern is the first German exhibition house to dedicate a retrospective to the work and life of Rudolf Levy. The catalogue opens the perspective on an artist of European standing whose rich pictorial world can be rediscovered again and again. Contributions by renowned authors shed light on Levy’s fate as a persecuted artist and as a persecuted Jew, on the artistic kaleidoscope of his time, his years in exile in Florence, and the reception and re-canonisation of his art in the young Federal Republic. Look inside Rediscovery of a great classic of modernism to mark a first retrospective in Germany – Project in international cooperation with the Uffizi Gallery in Florence Standard work on Rudolf Levy in German Including a contemporary art and text contribution by Edmund de Waal Exhibition: Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern, 28 October 2023 to 11 February 2024 (Under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier)

Hachette Book Group USA Play Nice A1071076408
A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER AND AN NPR BEST BOOK OF 2024 From a New York Times bestselling author and investigative journalist comes The Social Network for the video game industry: a riveting examination of Blizzard Entertainment's rise and shocking downfall—"A fast paced thrill ride, perfect for anyone who has ever played a video game" (Ben Mezrich). For video game fans, the name Blizzard Entertainment was once synonymous with perfection. The renowned company behind classics like Diablo and World of Warcraft was known to celebrate the joy of gaming over all else. What was once two UCLA students' simple mission — to make games they wanted to play — launched an empire with thousands of employees, millions of fans, and billions of dollars. But when Blizzard cancelled a buzzy project in 2013, it gave Bobby Kotick, the infamous CEO of corporate parent Activision, the excuse he needed to start cracking down on Blizzard's proud autonomy. Activision began invading Blizzard from the inside. Glitchy products, PR disasters, mass layoffs, and a staggering lawsuit marred the company's reputation and led to its ultimate reckoning. Based on firsthand interviews with more than 300 current and former employees, Play Nice chronicles the creativity, frustration, beauty, and betrayal across the epic 33-year saga of Blizzard Entertainment, showing us what it really means to "bleed Blizzard blue." Full of colorful personalities and dramatic twists, this is the story of what happens when the ruthless pursuit of profit meets artistic idealism.

Headline I'm Just Ryan: The Little Guide to Ryan Gosling A1073040338
Headline I'm Just Ryan: The Little Guide to Ryan Gosling A1073040338
To his millions of fans worldwide, Ryan Gosling is not just a handsome face that can say "Hey girl!" in a way that makes them go weak at the knees (though he can and does), he is the defining icon of the new Golden Age of cinema, a 21st-century Cary Grant, as macho as he is feminine, with a total of 11 Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations under his belt, and a Golden Globe victory for Best Actor. Since his tenure as a leading man, 20 years ago in The Notebook, Ryan's films have grossed more than $2 billion dollars, and his next few projects will certainly add to that figure, with Project Hail Mary, Wolf Man, Gray Man 2, and Margot Robbie's Ocean Eleven reboot keeping him in the La La Land limelight for many years to come. I'm Just Ryan throws a bright spotlight on the actor's playful and positive sense of humour and philosophy and revels in his ridiculous charm and sexiness with a wealth of iconic quotes and facts about the man - the legend - himself. "I did doubt my Kenergy in the beginning. I just wasn't sure I could do it but I just decided I was going to Ken as hard as I can. I Kenned in the morning; I Kenned at night. If I'm honest, I'm Kenning a little right now." Ryan, on channeling his "Kenergy". "Eva's the dream mother, and they're dream babies, and it's like a dream that I'm having right now. I'm dreaming it all." Ryan, on his wife Eva Mendes. Ryan Gosling's live performance of "I'm Just Ken" at the 2024 Academy Awards is already considered one of the most iconic moments in Oscars history. Dressed head-to-toe in pink, Ryan stole the show with Guns & Rose guitarist Slash and Mark Ronson, alongside 65 other "Ken's", and his Barbie co-stars. More than 20 million people tuned in to watch and sales of the song jumped by 900 per cent during the performance.

The Digital Voice of Nepal is a powerful true story of Roshan Shrestha - a Nepali journalist, digital media entrepreneur, and the founder of Khoj Samachar, WikiNP, and the Roshan Shrestha App. This inspiring biography explores how one individual from Sindhupalchok transformed Nepal's media landscape through honesty, technology, and digital innovation. Born in a small rural village, Roshan grew up with limited access to education and information. After the 2015 Nepal earthquake, he began documenting the truth with just a mobile phone - a moment that ignited his lifelong journey as an independent journalist. From that humble start, he went on to build Khoj Samachar, one of Nepal's most trusted independent digital news platforms, empowering citizens through transparent reporting. In 2024, he founded WikiNP - Nepal's first open digital encyclopedia - and later launched the Roshan Shrestha App, a free public platform providing verified information, visa verification tools, and civic education for Nepali citizens. Through these projects, Roshan proved that journalism and technology can unite to build a more informed and responsible nation. The Digital Voice of Nepal is more than a personal journey - it is the story of a new generation of Nepali journalists redefining truth in the digital era. For readers interested in media, technology, innovation, and Nepal's transformation, this book offers hope, courage, and a vision for a transparent, connected future.

Scribner Book Company Against Breaking A1076436560
Scribner Book Company Against Breaking A1076436560
24th Poet Laureate of the United States Ada Limón inspires us to see poetry as much more than just words—as a powerful force for healing, a call to action, and a vibrant celebration of humanity’s many voices. Ada Limón—celebrated poet laureate and 2023 MacArthur fellow—takes us on an inspiring journey into a world where poetry is both a soothing balm for the soul and a spark for transformation. With her blend of accessible yet profound prose, Limón delivers a powerful message: poetry has the ability to heal, connect, and remind us of our shared humanity. Limón’s mission to make poetry approachable shines brightly in this slim but impactful book. Recognized as a 2024 Time magazine Woman of the Year for her commitment to bringing poetry into everyday lives, Limón passionately argues that poetry is essential to understanding ourselves—our tenderness, courage, imperfections, and our deep, unshakable worthiness of love. Drawing from her own experiences as the 24th US poet laureate, Limón shares how poetry connects us not only to each other but to the natural world. This theme is at the heart of her project You Are Here, which celebrates the beauty of our environment and our place in it. Her prose, like her poetry, feels like an open invitation—welcoming readers of all backgrounds to explore the richness of human experience through verse. Fans of Robin Wall Kimmerer, Matthew Zapruder, or Jesmyn Ward will find a kindred spirit in Against Breaking—which offers a refuge, a reminder of the resilience and beauty found within us and all around us. As Limón writes with heartfelt clarity, “If you need to remember what makes us human, tender, brave, flawed, and worthy of love, you need poetry.”

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER and Best Book of 2024 for the Economist, Independent, and NPR ' Brilliant and timely' - Oliver Burkeman, author of Four Thousand Weeks From the New York Times bestselling author of Digital Minimalism and one of the world's top productivity experts, a groundbreaking philosophy for creating great work at a sustainable pace. Hustle culture. Burnout. Quiet quitting. Today we're either sacrificing ourselves on the altar of success or we're rejecting the idea of ambition entirely. But it doesn't have to be all or nothing. There is a way to create meaningful work as part of a balanced life, and it's called 'slow productivity'. Coined by Cal Newport, the bestselling author of Deep Work and Digital Minimalism, slow productivity is a revolutionary philosophy based on three simple principles: 1. Do fewer things. 2. Work at a natural pace. 3. Obsess over quality. Examining the stories and habits of ancient and modern scientists, philosophers, artists and scholars who worked in this way, Newport reveals just how transformative the slow productivity approach can be to producing a meaningful body of work. From managing your energy according to the season, to identifying which projects to pursue and which to set aside, to building a schedule that yields maximum output with minimum stress, this timely and essential book will revolutionise how you work, helping you to accomplish great things at a more humane pace. ONE OF BARACK OBAMA'S FAVORITE BOOKS OF SUMMER 2024 - A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - HUGO AWARD FINALIST FOR BEST NOVEL - WINNER OF THE GOODREADS CHOICE AWARD FOR SCIENCE FICTION - A GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK - A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: NPR, VANITY FAIR, ESQUIRE, VOX, GOOD HOUSEKEEPING, THE INDEPENDENT, PARADE, KIRKUS REVIEWS, AND MORE... "This summer's hottest debut." -Cosmopolitan - "Witty, sexy escapist fiction [that] packs a substantial punch...Fresh and thrilling." -Los Angeles Times - "Electric...I loved every second." -Emily Henry "Utterly winning...Imagine if The Time Traveler's Wife had an affair with A Gentleman in Moscow...Readers, I envy you: There's a smart, witty novel in your future." -Ron Charles, The Washington Post A time travel romance, a spy thriller, a workplace comedy, and an ingenious exploration of the nature of power and the potential for love to change it all: Welcome to The Ministry of Time, the exhilarating debut novel by Kaliane Bradley. In the near future, a civil servant is offered the salary of her dreams and is, shortly afterward, told what project she'll be working on. A recently established government ministry is gathering "expats" from across history to establish whether time travel is feasible-for the body, but also for the fabric of space-time. She is tasked with working as a "bridge": living with, assisting, and monitoring the expat known as "1847" or Commander Graham Gore. As far as history is concerned, Commander Gore died on Sir John Franklin's doomed 1845 expedition to the Arctic, so he's a little disoriented to be living with an unmarried woman who regularly shows her calves, surrounded by outlandish concepts such as "washing machines," "Spotify," and "the collapse of the British Empire." But with an appetite for discovery, a seven-a-day cigarette habit, and the support of a charming and chaotic cast of fellow expats, he soon adjusts. Over the next year, what the bridge initially thought would be, at best, a horrifically uncomfortable roommate dynamic, evolves into something much deeper. By the time the true shape of the Ministry's project comes to light, the bridge has fallen haphazardly, fervently in love, with consequences she never could have imagined. Forced to confront the choices that brought them together, the bridge must finally reckon with how-and whether she believes-what she does next can change the future. An exquisitely original and feverishly fun fusion of genres and ideas, The Ministry of Time asks: What does it mean to defy history, when history is living in your house? Kaliane Bradley's answer is a blazing, unforgettable testament to what we owe each other in a changing world.

Scholastic Sunrise on the Reaping (eBook) A1074966589
"Sunrise on the Reaping is a propulsive, heart-wrenching addition to The Hunger Games, adding welcome texture to the cruel world of Panem . This is the project of dystopian fiction: to shine a light in tyranny''s greasiest corners and show how people - ordinary, determined human beings - might take it apart" - New York Times "Collins is an excellent writer, and there are moments of surprising lyricism . Sunrise on the Reaping contains enough both to snare new readers and to satisfy the most bloodthirsty fan" - Guardian When you''ve been set up to lose everything you love, what is there left to fight for? As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honour of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes. Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves. Verve Books Orange A1076803704
Verve Books Orange A1076803704
A candid portrayal of first love and self-discovery, from the author of the 'instant queer classic', Isaac. Cornwall, 2018. In the quiet fishing village of Portscatho, sixteen-year-old Daniel and seventeen-year-old Jago form an unexpected connection - something neither of them can name. What unfolds is transformative, particularly for Daniel, who for the first time feels truly seen. East London, 2023. Daniel has rewritten himself: sharper, louder, queer in a way the city understands. But a visit from Jago stirs up a reckoning with his former life, forcing them both to question how much change their bond can withstand. Reminiscent of Edouard Louis and Douglas Stuart's writing, Orange examines how we reconcile our past selves with the people we become, those we bring with us and those we leave behind. PRAISE FOR CURTIS GARNER 'So vivid and real, it brought a thousand memories rushing back' - Russell T Davies, writer of It's A Sin and Queer As Folk 'An instant queer classic' - Jon Ransom, author of The Gallopers 'Garner writes like a queer, twenty-first-century Richard Yates: honest, uncompromising, fearless, and completely engrossing' - Alex Pheby, author of Playthings 'The dating scenes crackle with energy' - Financial Times 'Garner captures the complexities of coming of age as a young, queer person... delivered with wit, honesty and tenderness' - Attitude 'Garner's novel, bold and unflinching, asks how we project different identities onto those whom we love - or think we do' - Telegraph 'Fast-paced, raw and emotionally intelligent; brilliant on the vulnerability inherent in so many first relationships'- Daily Mail 'A significant new voice in queer literature' - Scene Magazine 'One of 2024's most captivating and evocative debut novels' - AnOther This novel contains depictions of domestic abuse, sex, and alcohol/drug use.

Chelsea Green Publishing Hunt for the Shadow Wolf A1073492858
Longlisted for the Wainwright Prize 2024 for Nature Writing. The Telegraph 'One of the most remarkable figures in British conservation.' The Observer 'There have been several books on the fate of British wolves, but this is the best.' The Spectator 'Beautifully crafted, fascinating and unbearably poignant, I totally loved this book.' Isabella Tree, author of Wilding 'A dazzling romp through the turbulent history of wolves in Britain.' Lee Schofield, author of Wild Fell 'Gow's anecdotes will leave you howling - and his historical detective work to track down the shadow of the wolf is as gripping as any thriller.' Guy Shrubsole, author of The Lost Rainforests of Britain 'Gow reinvents what it means to be a guardian of the countryside.' Guardian Author of Bringing Back the Beaver and Britain's favourite maverick rewilder Derek Gow embarks on an adventure to uncover the mythology, mystery and history of wolves in Britain. Derek Gow's dream is that one day we will see the return of the wolf to Britain. Wolf rewilding projects have been successfully implemented across the world - so what is holding us back in the UK? Hunt for the Shadow Wolf is Derek's quest to uncover the true nature of this magnificent creature. As Derek worked to reintroduce the beaver, he began to hear stories of the wolf, both real and mythical, and his fascination with it grew. He pieced together fragments of information, stories and artefacts to reveal a shadowy creature that first walked proud through these lands and then was hunted to extinction. What Derek came to realise was that the underlying motives behind our hatred were actually rooted in power and profit. We turned the wolf into a savage beast and saw its extirpation as a civilising mission. But the wolf endured and Derek tells of his sightings through folklore and mythology, the records of grand estates and parish churches as well as wolf heads, both real and recreated. With bitingly funny but also tender stories, Hunt for the Shadow Wolf makes clear why we must reconcile our relationship with this majestic animal before we can begin to bring it back to these lands. 'Gow has a fire in his belly. We need more like him.' BBC Wildlife Magazine

Little, Brown Book Group Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands A1068003287
'Forget dark academia: give me instead this kind of winter-sunshined, sharp-tongued and footnoted academia, full of field trips and grumpy romance' Freya Marske, author of A Marvellous Light An intrepid professor must uncover faerie secrets in the delightful and heart-warming second instalment of the Sunday Times bestselling Emily Wilde series. Emily Wilde is a genius scholar of faerie folklore, and has catalogued many secrets of the Hidden Folk in her encyclopaedia with her infuriatingly charming fellow scholar, Wendell Bambleby, by her side. But Bambleby is more than just a brilliant and unbearably handsome scholar. He's an exiled faerie king on the run from his murderous mother, in search of a door back to his realm. By lucky happenstance, Emily's new project, a map of the realms of faerie, will take them on an adventure to the picturesque Austrian Alps, where Emily believes they may find the door to Bambleby's realm, and the key to freeing him from his family's dark plans. But with new friendships for the prickly Emily to navigate and dangerous Folk lurking in every forest and hollow, Emily must unravel the mysterious workings of faerie doors, and of her own heart. Praise for this series: 'A darkly gorgeous fantasy that sparkles with snow and magic, this book wholly enchanted me' Sangu Mandanna, author of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches 'A thoroughly charming academic fairy tale, complete with footnotes and a low-key grumpy romance' Guardian 'Enchanting in every sense of the word. . . This book is real magic' H. G. Parry, author of The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep 'A book so vividly, endlessly enchanting, so crisply assured, so rich and complete and wise and far-reaching in its worldbuilding that you'll walk away half ensorcelled, sure Fawcett found Emily Wilde's journal in some sea-stained trunk' Melissa Albert 'The ideal book to curl up with on a chilly winter's evening. . . this book is an absolute delight. Vermilion Jähner, H: Vertigo A1069238660
Vermilion Jähner, H: Vertigo A1069238660
*An Observer Book of the Year, 2024* 'This is one of the most gripping accounts of an era spanning war defeat, humiliation and failed revolution in 1918 to the violence, intimidation and propaganda of the Nazis' rise to power in 1933. It contains many lessons for the world now.' - John Kampfner, bestselling author of Why The Germans Do It Better 'Vertigo is outstanding. Harald Jähner's gift for illuminating the big picture with telling detail gives the reader an uncanny sense of what it was actually like to be present in Germany during the Weimar Republic. This is history at its very best.' - Julia Boyd, bestselling author of Travellers in the Third Reich Germany, 1918 : a country in flux. The First World War is over, the nation defeated. Revolution is afoot, the monarchy has fallen and the victory of democracy beckons. Everything must change with the times. Out of the ashes of the First World War, Germany launches an unprecedented political project: its first democratic government. The Weimar Republic is established. The years that follow see political extremism, economic upheaval, revolutionary violence and the transformation of Germany. Tradition is shaken to its core as a triumphant procession of liberated lifestyles emerges. Women conquer the racetracks and tennis courts, go out alone in the evenings, cut their hair short and cast the idea of marriage aside. Unisex style comes into fashion, androgynous and experimental. People revel in the discovery of leisure, filling up boxing halls, dance palaces and the hotspots of the New Age, embracing the department stores' promise of happiness and accepting the streets as a place of fierce political battles. In this short burst of life between the wars, amidst a frenzy of change, comes a backlash from those who do not see themselves reflected in the new Republic. Little by little, deep divisions begin to emerge. Divisions that would bring devastating consequences, altering the course of the twentieth century and the lives of millions around the world. Vertigo is a vital, kaleidoscopic portrait of a pivotal moment in German history. Praise for Aftermath by Harald Jähner: ' Exemplary [and] important... This is the kind of book few writers possess the clarity of vision to write' - Max Hastings, Sunday Times 'A masterpiece' - Spectator 'Magnificent... There are great lessons in the nature of humanity to be learnt here' - Rupert Christiansen, The Telegraph 'Jähner is masterly in telling the tragic, despicable, comedic and uplifting stories of those who were there' - Katja Hoyer, The Times 'Thought-provoking... J ä hner's unflinching account is a reminder that historical truths are rarely simple and always nuanced' - Daily Mail 'A reminder that the German experience will always stand apart' - Economist
