Ihre Ausrichtung stellt eine enorme Herausforderung in Bezug auf Infrastruktur und Organisation für das Gastgeberland dar. Seit dem 15. Mai 2004 steht fest, dass die Endrunde der 19. Fussball-WM vom 11. Juni bis zum 11. Juli 2010 in Südafrika und damit erstmals auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent ausgetragen wird. Aufgrund eines von der FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) beschlossenen Rotationsprinzips wurden für die Fussball-WM 2010 nur Bewerbungen afrikanischer Länder genehmigt. Neben Südafrika wurden noch die nordafrikanischen Staaten Ägypten und Marokko in der engeren Auswahl verblieben. Südafrika verfügt bereits über Erfahrungen mit Großveranstaltungen, so wurden von der Kaprepublik die Rugby-WM 1995, der Cricket World Cup 2003, die Weltmeisterschaft des Women¿s World Cup of Golf 2005 und 2006 sowie das Eröffnungsstraßenrennen der A1 GP im Motorsport 2006 erfolgreich ausgerichtet. Aber die Fussball-WM 2010, mit mehr als 26 Milliarden erwarteten Fernsehzuschauern bei 64 Spielen, wird alle bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt ausgetragenen Sportereignisse um ein vielfaches überragen. Deutschland hat als WM-austragendes Land 2006 ein beeindruckendes Erbe hinterlassen, an dem viele Fußballfans, sei es vor Ort oder vor dem Fernseher, das Turnier in Südafrika messen werden. Der ehemalige südafrikanische Staatspräsident Thabo Mbeki ist der Meinung, dass die Fussball-WM einen großen Beitrag nicht nur zu Südafrikas Sozialwirtschaftswachstum, sondern auch zur Entwicklung des Kontinents als Ganzes leisten werde. ¿Für diesen unersetzlichen Nutzen schulden wir es der FIFA und dem Rest der Fußballwelt, uns richtig auf 2010 vorzubereiten¿, sagte Mbeki und forderte jeden Südafrikaner zur Zusammenarbeit auf, um sicherzustellen, dass das Land ¿die beste Fußballweltmeisterschaft aller Zeiten¿ ausrichten werde. Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 70, Stellenbosch Universitiy, language: English, abstract: For millions of people around the globe, football is an important part of everyday life. Similarly, many African governments have found in international football competitions one of the few opportunities to be internationally represented. Furthermore, through successful participation of their respective national football sides, they internally seek to foster nationhood. In fact, football is an integral part of African self-esteem with regards to being recognised by the rest of the world. However, to succeed in international sports means to succeed in a politico-economic structure far from equality and general solidarity. This thesis goes about the question why South Africa received the FIFA 2010 World Cup. Thereby it will distinguish the position of the African continent within the international football system. A historical analysis will clarify the processes and actors as well as the driving motivations which led to the FIFA World Cup host decision in favour of the African continent. The outcome of this study suggests that social interaction is driven by the interplay of two variables: normative principles and economic practices. The historical development of modern social behaviour from the 16th century until today¿s global capitalism surely reflects the interplay of these two traits. At the hand of the historical development of the international football system this thesis is going to outline this interplay ¿ as a European form of behaviour that came to encapsulate all social relations on the globe particularly by the spread of the cultural practice of football. This study reaches the overall conclusion that the decision to let an African nation host the FIFA World Cup meant that economic practice and normative principles were brought into perceived congruence.

This book contains a study that aims to reveal how transnational television news depicted and framed South Africa during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Newscasts from three transnational broadcasters – BBC World News, CNN International and Al Jazeera English – aired during the FIFA World Cup 2012, have been analyzed with a methodological combination a quantitative content analysis and a discourse analysis. The research is based on the concept of media representations, the relation of sports and news media, previous research on football World Cups in the media and the role of transnational television. The study provides not only insights into how the broadcasters represented the host country and on which topics they focused. It also reveals possible differences or similarities in the news coverage of the three transnational television broadcasters.
